Is The Horton Mine Haunted?

  • The Horton Mine is one of the more famous (or infamous?) abandoned mines out there. Yet, despite its fame, most people appear to be too scared to go to the end of it or even into the mine at all! Well, I’ll tell you right now that I went all of the way to the end and looked around thoroughly (You can look forward to seeing that in this video without any hype or gimmicks). The fear of this mine originates from two videos published on Mr. Frank Hood’s channel that contained strange elements such as swinging chains, bizarre electronic voices, cold blasts of air and more. Creepy stuff, no? This was too good for me to pass up and so when driving through the area I decided to see for myself what the deal was. I’m somewhat skeptical about the supernatural and so in order to maximize the creepiness and to place myself in the right state of mind I decided to explore the mine in the dark and by myself...
    There are no editing tricks in this video. I’m just going to show you what it is really like inside. Some have suggested that there are radios or other communications systems inside this abandoned mine. Others have suggested that there is an alarm system inside of the mine. There are none of these things present. Some have suggested that there are ropes or fishing line attached to the chains to make them swing. There is nothing like that either. Really, nothing is out of the ordinary. So, is the Horton Mine haunted or not? You decide and let me know what you think... Ghosts or no ghosts, I will say that this mine would be a good site for a horror film.
    The Horton Mine served as a haulage adit for workings higher up the mountain. There is a warehouse/office building near the upper adit, but it is in rough shape and the upper workings are mostly caved. So, there isn’t much left to see up there. Ore was dropped down to the Horton Mine haulage adit as you’ll see in the video and then brought out via a system of conveyor belts. This was much more efficient than sending a series of trucks endlessly up and down the steep mountain road. Although I didn’t expect to need them in Nevada, it is a good thing that I brought the waders because the Horton Mine was a lot more wet inside than I expected!

    Growing up in California’s “Gold Rush Country” made it easy to take all of the history around us for granted. However, abandoned mine sites have a lot working against them - nature, vandals, scrappers and various government agencies… The old prospectors and miners that used to roam our lonely mountains and toil away deep underground are disappearing quickly as well.
    These losses finally caught our attention and we felt compelled to make an effort to document as many of the ghost towns and abandoned mines that we could before that niche of our history is gone forever. But, guess what? We have fun doing it! This is exploring history firsthand - bushwhacking down steep canyons and over rough mountains, figuring out the techniques the miners used and the equipment they worked with, seeing the innovations they came up with, discovering lost mines that no one has been in for a hundred years, wandering through ghost towns where the only sound is the wind... These journeys allow a feeling of connection to a time when the world was a very different place. And I’d love to think that in some small way we are paying tribute to those hardy miners that worked these mines before we were even born.
    So, yes, in short, we are adit addicts… I hope you’ll join us on these adventures!

      TVR Exploring I know, right? Hard to believe I initially explored this place over four years ago. It’s very gratifying to see that the mine and my initial vids are still inspiring explorers to this day and still making believers out of nonbelievers, and nonbelievers out of believers. To each his own.... I was there to simply document the place.
      When were you there? Recently or a couple months ago? Someone told me that they were just there within the last week or two, I believe, and they said that the adit is now gated - but, according to him, it’s still passable in some way.

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  7 років тому +35

      Yes, Frank, you certainly kicked off quite a lot of interest and intrigue around this one... You probably made this mine the most famous of all of the mines that you made famous. I was there in July when I was on my way to meet Graham. If true, that's a shame that this one is gated now. As you well know, that would have been quite a job to gate that one given its size. It's funny that every branch of our government is crying poverty and yet the BLM and the Forest Service seem to have no shortage of funds for "reclaiming" abandoned mines. They permanently closed a lot of our favorites in Northern California this summer, which was distressing. Among those was an alcove that went back for no more than four feet (no exaggeration) into solid rock and yet that was gated as well.

    • @AbandonedMines11

      TVR Exploring There is a campsite right across the main road from this mine. I don’t know if you knew that or if you even stayed there. I think it’s run by the state but it might be a federal camping spot. It’s not that big, but it is a great place to camp. It has around eight spots or so to pull into, and there is also a restroom. I’m surprised the mines were not gated long ago being that the camping spot is in such close proximity to them. Did you hike up to the Victorine Mine? Not much there to see. The third time I was there, Jeremy and Graham were with me and we actually climbed up that tailings pile to reach the upper area where the buildings are instead of hiking on the road! That was quite a scramble! The top of the ore pass that drops into the Horton Mine is up there, though. A landslide took out the back portion of the buildings that are up there, too. Some woman left a few comments on one of my Horton videos a couple years ago saying that she and her husband had leased that mine back in the 1980s or something like that. She said they always feared a landslide would come down on that building which housed their lab and some other things. She also said in her comments that the miners often would come out of the mines up there scared shitless because of things they said they saw or heard in the mines. Her comments were very intriguing. She also said that oftentimes things in her lab would be moved around or out of place with no explanation of how they got that way. It would’ve been cool to actually interview her face-to-face, but I never pursued it. I think she said they were living in South America now or something like that. Or at least her husband was - I think. Anyway, if you never saw those comments they are worth looking at and reading. She was very sincere. I think her name was Renee.

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  7 років тому +15

      Yes, I saw the campsite on my way out because some guys had a campfire going there. I was shocked that the Horton hadn't been gated already given the proximity to the campground... I know that one of the criteria for gating is how dangerous the mine is considered to be and that one seemed relatively safe from collapses, but probably more likely is the fact that it would be a challenging job to gate that one. No, I didn't make it up to the Victorine as it was already dark when I got out of the Horton. Plus I'd heard somewhere (probably from you) that the modern building up top has been stripped down to a shell and that the upper workings are caved after the first chamber. I'd love to see that ore pass though! Did they have a grizzly or something like that over it or was it just a big hole plunging down into the depths? That's interesting to hear about the creepy things the miners working there experienced. I'll have to see if I can find her comments on your video... I'm sure it would have been interesting to talk to her.

The video just bobs along up and down like a gentle ride, but stays so extremely steady otherwise. I can hear your feet sloshing along, but it's like a steadicam shot with gentle up and down motion. Actually, chances are they could be more common than we are lead to believe. Most people are aware of the phenomenon where people will get harassed and shamed if ever they share an experience that many people believe to be impossible. And as such, most people do not share their unusual experiences. Only the brave people willing to face backlash will share unusual experiences. Also, most people are not filming when something weird happens. So most of the unusual things that people experience are never brought to public awareness.

    I hope I can pick up this sort of hobby one day.
    I'm from Norway, and Norway has its fair share of Abandoned Mines, Caves, Tunnels connecting Bomb shelters, Nazi-Bunkers (lots of abandoned WW2 stuff the Germans made during the occupation), and Hydro-Electric power plants deep into mountains.
    I recently learned (As I work for ISP-company and we have fiber optics lines hidden in places you would have never guessed!) There is an underground "abondoned" tunnel complex that stretches throughout the city of Bergen.
    Saw also an article about some guys exploring it, it's illegal to traverse there, but things they found were quite interesting.
    It still has electricity in it, and there were clear traces of people using certain corridors as a Shooting range for guns and junkies using it as a hideout.
    If you guys ever decide to have a vacation to Norway, I really hope you get to explore and make a video of the abandoned mines here! There are so many, some ranging all the way back to the medival ages.
    I've been lucky enough to go into an active Hydro-electric plant, and the halls they make in the mountains are HUGE.
    Although I doubt any of them will be abandoned anytime soon, but imagining them being in the state of Horton gives me shivers.

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  6 років тому +3

      Yes, you have some great sites in Norway. We almost made it to Pyramiden this year, but it just didn't work out. From what you said, it sounds like I need to do some more research on Norway because I didn't know there were that many abandoned mines. I also didn't realize there were so many WW II sites in Norway from the Germans. I mean, I knew they occupied Norway, of course, but I didn't realize that they had made so many bunkers and such...

    • @Kameeho
      @Kameeho 6 років тому +2

      Here is an interesting map of Norway and all its Documented mineral-resources. They can wary from quarries to mines etc.
      But it should give you a somewhat overview of the concentration of mining activities in different areas.
      geo.ngu.no/kart/mineralressurser/
      Red = metal, Green = Natural Rock, Blue = Industrial Minerals
      (The map is a pain in the ass to use, even I struggle to use it. just play around with it, my best advice is just to try figure out the zoom function and zoom into areas that might be interesting and try get the location Name for further research)
      Also along the coast, you will find alot of Coastal batteries that the Germans made in WWII, these usually have a bunker or entrenchment system attached to it. Norway also had some of the ridiculously huge Coastal guns named the Adolfkanonen.
      This video here shows an example of what you can find.
      ua-cam.com/video/zJu6aNaL1ZM/v-deo.html
      Reason for one of my high interest in these is when I was a kid growing up, I lived along the coast and there were a lot of "mystery" rusted metal doors that I've always wondered what was beyond the door. I went exploring into one, and it was a tunnel that lead from the place where we used to go swimming in the summer, to a couple of KM up to where I live currently and went parallel with a river inside the mountain.
      Later I learned this tunnel is still "active" and is mainly used by the State-Water and Sewage company, as well as electricity cables going through. But was made by the Germans, most likely used for transporting ammunition and provisions to the ships.
      Also Highly recommend getting a Gass-Measurer instrument, it is a must-have when exploring caves and mines here! Norwegian mountains can be quite radioactive and are quite plagued with high level so Radon-Gas concentrations. Heck, even normal Norwegian basements can be plagued by radon-gas lol

      Np, from my historical knowledge, if you want to find ww2 related bunkers and tunnels, my guess would be Narvik, Where most of the Swedish steel went through to the harbour to supply the German War effort, Kongsberg which is still active area of and is the capital of Norwegian weapon industry today, and has been since the medieval ages a important mining capital, Bergen for being a harbour station for the Atlantic fleet for the Germans along with Narvik, and ofcourse Oslo, being the capital of Norway riddles with bunkers and tunnel systems wich the Royalty itself used to escape the German occupation and into england for the duration of the war. And you also have an Area called Nome which houses some of the oldest Mineral mines in Norway.

    Most, if not all, of the "scary sounds" caught on camera in 'haunted mines' are due to where they are connected. By that I mean it's not necessarily wind causing the sounds. My grandmother has a house that is actually connected to an abandoned Copper mine in Visnes, Norway. The story goes that they heard sounds coming from a cave hidden behind a small door. It always happened around evening time. The REASON for this sound was actually because of certain times where they did explosives in the mines but also at times where they had shift-changes and the collection of voices were loud enough to travel far.
    The shaft connected to my grandmothers house was a dead end for a person, but sound could travel through cracks and the likes in the stone. While the digging happened hundreds of meters below and well over a couple kilometers into the distance, the sound echoed throughout the entire mines and connecting "tubes". These old, abandoned mines might easily be connected to something similar that causes the sounds and the echoing being because they cut off into many smaller sources.

    • @TVRExploring

      The knocks are the water dripping on the metal frame. As his walking up to the shoot was his waders knocking. And the wisper is also himself breathing lol......

    Incredible. It might not seem like much, but about 90% of people (including myself) would never walk in there. I used to cave explore, but not this one. Great video. Thank you.

    I liked the sp00ky splashing sounds and the terrifying broken rock. Definitely haunted, no one can explain those footsteps in the water
    10/420 would sp00k again

    So, Im not on my para rink channel right now, but as a paranormal investigator i can say that activity changes a lot. A haunted location won’t always exhibit the same amount of activity as it did another day. And not everyone will experience the same things. And sometimes it depends on the day, the time of year, or even the person. A lot of the time we go for hours on a investigation without activity and evidence and BOOM. all at once it hits and is gone just like that.

    I recognized the portal, I've seen someone's video on this mine. But your video was much nicer, thank you. The one I had seen before was one of those tilting camera fast panning ones that are difficult to really see anything in. I appreciate your camera work. Lots of footprints in there, looks well explored. Wonder if anyone has explored any upper levels. The bats added a nice Halloween feel at the end :>

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  7 років тому +3

      Thank you. I suspect that the person filming the video you saw was swinging the camera around in order to try and create a sense of confusion and panic. However, personally, I hate it when the camera is swinging around all over the place... The upper levels are all caved aside from a small chamber just inside of the mine. Ha, yes, I was glad to see the bats at the end.

    When I think of abandoned mines, I think of the classic mine with the mine carts on tracks, dynamite, the Wild West, wooden beam supports all over and yeah 😂

    • @TVRExploring
      @TVRExploring  6 років тому +3

      What you just described are my favorite types of mines to explore... Sure, these modern mines can be interesting sometimes, but I really like the mines with the ore cart tracks, the woodwork, dynamite boxes, etc. If you check out some of the other videos here, you'll see plenty of those kinds of abandoned mines.

      The best thing someone who believes in the paranormal can do is not let their feelings get in the way of an investigation, thats how you know someone is truly dedicated to the proof.
      They always act like the blair witch is coming at them and bail out with fake evidence or poor evidence. Then someone comes along with no emotions and proves that theres nothing to be afraid of. Your move Frank. Creepy looking and creepy feeling does not validate a haunting.
