I love that you did 3 different mats to truly give a real test! I think I'd use removable vinyl, flex seal spray, and the uv clear spray. Thank you so much for the video!
I recently bought a cricut and it has been so confusing. I am a wreathmaker and make many different tutorials for my shop and I have to say you are absolutely amazing. Your videos have been a lifesaver for me. Thank you so so much and Happy Holidays!
I'm brand-new to the Cricut maker family. You are my first choice to check the blog and your projects. Thank you so much for sharing your talent. God bless you.
Thank you so much. I tried someone’s HTV method, and it only worked for the large font for the mat. When I tried to do the smaller words part of the mat it wouldn’t adhere to the mat. And It was just a total waste. So happy you show the best way to save everyone money.
Jennifer, thanks so much for this video. I've been contemplating making a door make but was a little nervous to do so. Now I definitely will make one. I love that you show the different options and which worked best, etc. THANKS!!!
I've just sprayed the second coat of flex seal on mine. I used freezer paper and a couple of pins to hold centers of letters in place. It was super easy thanks to your instruction and I think it will be really cute. The hard part, waiting for the flex seal to dry so I can clear coat it, ugh, then the waiting again! Thank you so much for making the instructional video so clear and easy to follow!
Thank you, Linda! I love to teach! And I think it's important to experiment with many different options, so people can choose what works best for them! Or see what might or might not work best! 😂
Awesome video, yet another great project to try. I just had a thought, with the vinyl sticking to it's self, what about weeding it as you did, but then us transfer tape (or painters masking tape - my fav) putting that on the front of the stencil , turning the stencil over and peeling off the backing then you have it in a firm sheet , as it were, to plonk down on the mat
I want to thank you I’ve been searching all over youtube for a good tutorial. I even against my better judgement tried HTV. If it wasn’t for you I wouldn’t have thought to use poster board (cheap and stiff which is easiest to get off the mat and place on the doormat itself.
I should have watched this first - put transfer tape on the stencil vinyl and spent way too much time getting frustrated before declaring defeat! Trying again today so keeping my fingers crossed that this time, thanks to your video, I can get this doormat done as a Christmas gift as I originally planned rather than maybe Easter 😁
Or laminate cardstock and freezer paper so that you get the ease of cardstock with the light sticking of freezer paper. Laminating the cardstock and freezer paper with a spray on adhesive and three reference points should work quick and easy.
Your porch is absolutely lovely!!! I want to have a porch exactly like it, or, drop by and relax on yours😁!!! Another superbly professional tutorial, Jennifer, THANK YOU!!!
Hello! Not sure if you’ll see this message but can you do an update on the mats? I checked the blog but there was only one update shortly after but I’m curious how they’ve lasted over the past year. Thank you so much! Great tutorial!
Of course I'll see your message! The only difference between the mats is that one of them has been losing more "fuzz" than the other two, but the printing has remained the same on all three! 😍
Love it. Especially that you tried and showed us, three different stencil types, paint materials, and sealants. Feel really good about starting this project when the weather clears up. :)
Love this tutorial!! Thank you for taking the time to use different materials! It really helps beginners like me! I look forward to checking your blog in another 3 months for an update:)
I found more bleeding with the freezer paper. Even with the pins. I seen more bleeding in the freezer paper than the vinyl in your testing too. It does take more time but the crisp end result is more important to me. I thank you for testing these. I need a red color and I can’t find it locally in the flex seal so I will be getting the outdoor acrylic from Michael’s… I had no clue it even existed. Thanks again
Isn't it interesting to see how the different combinations worked? I'm always just as fascinated by the outcomes of my little experiments as you are! 😁
I did it Yeah.....I tried the vinyl but it couldn't get it to stick right to the carpet and ended up using the freezer paper. Awesome and I use the Flex Rubber and the the Flex Searl. Thank you for the tutorial. My friend really liked her matt.
I saw on your blog after checking for the follow up about your round mat shedding, I learned that you can vacuum them to get up all the shedding! I never would have thought to try that until I read about it!
Haven't checked the blog for the updates, but I wonder if a sealant is really necessary for the spray rubber. I used a similar product at work that came in a gallon bucket to mark a danger zone in a high traffic area (it was bright yellow rubber paint) and didn't need a sealant. But, different conditions and materials have different results. Something to think about though.
You hit it right on the head, Bec, when you said different conditions and materials have different results! I don't know the product you are talking about, so don't know if it would hold up with a sealant or now, but it might be worth experimenting with! I love to experiment! Thanks! 😁
Hi Jennifer - I make personalized doormats all the time and I have found that the Smart Iron On works the best for crisp lines. I didn't know about the rubber flex seal. Do you have any idea about the longevity of the Rubber Flex Seal? Just curious if it would last as long as the outdoor acrylic.
Yes! July 2019 update: My smaller mats are still looking great. No changes, in fact. But my big mat, the half-circle one, is looking decidedly worse for wear. It’s not that the paint has worn off - it’s that the mat is shedding fibers like a crazy woman!
Use vinyl as your stencil, stick it to the mat then use hairdryer to make it adhere . And use rubber paint for paint. Then Scot h guard x3 times to seal
Will try this, I have wasted so much money on materials (all kinds now) trying to get a stencil. So you put two waxy sides together and press (with a low heat)?
Hi! Thank you for the detailed review. Can you please share which sealer worked best? It’s hard to tell from the pictures. Your opinion or any other viewers opinions are appreciated! Thank you!
I have been debating on getting a cricut and you are inspiring me to get one. Love all your tutorials. Your videos are so informative. I appreciate you!!!
if you were going to use different colors on your mat, what would you use for your paint color? Ive seen some done with colors...thanks in advance for your answer. :)
I love that you did 3 different mats to truly give a real test! I think I'd use removable vinyl, flex seal spray, and the uv clear spray. Thank you so much for the video!
Your videos are so comprehensive!! So much good info. I'm a detail person, so I appreciate it. Thanks so much!!
Thanks for video. The transfer paper works but not too sticky
I had NO idea that holding down the shift key while adjusting the letters kept them from moving up and down. Thank you Thank you!
Neither did I!
Right!! Mind blown!!! 🤯
I tried to do this, but it doesn't work? I tried shift click, and click and shift, it still moves up and down. What am I doing wrong?
@@jessicabolt5633 I hold down shift, click on the letter to activate it, then use the arrow keys to move it.
Me neither! Awesome tip. 👌🏽
Love how you take so much care to properly compare application & plans to evaluate long term!
Thank you, Stefanie! I do love to experiment to see what happens! 😂
I make these all the time and I use the freezer paper and flex seal. Works amazing and makes it so quick.
Good to know!
Thanks for another great tutorial. I love that you test multiple methods and share all of the results.
I don't need to browse and hunt for the best and easiest way to do my projects. All your tutorials cover EVERYTHING I need to know.

Following up after 4 years, what was the best seal?
All of the paints lasted longer than the mats 😊🌻
Thank you so much. I tried someone’s HTV method, and it only worked for the large font for the mat. When I tried to do the smaller words part of the mat it wouldn’t adhere to the mat. And It was just a total waste. So happy you show the best way to save everyone money.

Great video. Thank you for taking it beyond just painting the doormats. Can't wait to see the results of how well they hold up under everyday use.
Wow now I don't have to buy one to be made for me, I can do my own. Thanks Jennifer love it.
😀😍💖👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Now this one has got to be my favorite video !!!!!!
YAY! So glad! Thanks for watching!
So smart using the freezer paper
Thank you!
Thanks for testing the products, making it so much easier for all of us to be successful on our first try. This is happening at my house very soon!
Yay! Can't wait to see it!
You explain everything in away thats easy to understand and I'm just beginning. I love the fact that doormats can be personalized. Thank you so much.
Glad it was helpful, Lanie! 😍
These are so cute. I really enjoy watching you. You know how to teach. I love how you show which works the best.
Thank you, Linda! I love to teach! And I think it's important to experiment with many different options, so people can choose what works best for them! Or see what might or might not work best! 😂
Not sure if anyone has suggested this to you, but I use shelf liner from the dollar tree for stencil material, it works great!
Great tip, Mark! 😊
I use shelf liner too and I use press and seal by Glad to remove my stencil(shelf liner) to transfer it to my mat.
It was great the way you used different materials and show differences in how they look with each one! Thank you so much for all you do!
Thank YOU for watching!
I am a diehard fan of yours because of the detail. Keep up the good work!
Thanks for showing the different materials and how to work with them. Now I can’t wait for it to get warm enough outside so I can make a doormat!
Thank you! I know! Warmer days are soon here, thank goodness! ❤️

I love this site, so informative.
Thanks Jenni (my wifes name )
