  • Fernando Alonso will go down in F1 history as one of the greats, but his career was rarely straightforward. In this video Edd Straw charts the ups and downs from the double world champion's career, from his emergence at the back of the grid with Minardi, to his success with Renault, two controversial stints with McLaren and a Ferrari stint that promised so much and never quite delivered. Which of his non-title-winning seasons was as good as his championship years of 2005-06? Find out what we think by watching the video, and let us know in the comments what you think were his best and worst moments!

@@coulthard2006 Not really. Hamilton and Vettel both outpoint Alonso when misfortune is taken into account in 2012, but we don't mention that, right? Because it never matters when other drivers have bad luck as far as Alonso fanboys are concerned.
2012 was a good season for Alonso but he wouldn't have been anywhere near winning the title without the misfortune of other drivers. Its actually been calculated that he made a net gain in points off the back of other drivers bad luck that year.

Alonso is definitely one of the best drivers, no doubt. He has the capability to make lesser cars shine like well polished turds. Unfortunately his insistence or running things his way and public, scathing criticisms of his teams means that he often burns bridges wherever he goes. So even if he wants to return to F1, his choices will be extremely limited or non existent.

i think its not only burning bridges... it also seams that he is not able to give good feedback for developing a car / his way of expressing anger is hurting the work between departments, because he openly starts a blame war - at least that is the way it felt like in the last few years... plus the way he is fighting his own teammates over the years

Sebastian P this is a pure myth that rose after the ferrari years and kept being repeted when he drove shit carss. Fact is, his teammates or the engineers he worked with tell a completely different story.
Grosjean once said that Alonso was able to change his driving style within two laps and give detailed feedback on how the car behaves and what to change and how impressed he was with this trait.

    • @djoetma
      @djoetma 4 роки тому +19

@@jimmymagic2438 'Now we can fight'. That car was the slowest on the grid several times. Alonso really thought it was just the engine at McLaren-Honda while Button was able to tell that it was more. Proof of that we saw in the first year they ran the Renault (and no, that car wasn't build for the Honda, they decided to leave Honda very early the year before). Chief Forghieri said that Alonso can't develop a car. Google it, you'lll find it. And we also saw proof that he's not able to work in a team. Rosberg talked about his political games, the tweet is probably still there, google it. Chandhok in his Q+A for DriveTribe said it as well and Horner in the Beyond the Grid podcast. And these are just some examples.
Alonso was really fast on-track, apart from that he's simply terrible. Can't develop a car, no technical skills, can't work in a team, can't manage a team.
But hey, the entire grid is probably wrong, right? Ferrari didn't want him even for free (against the mechanics' will, I'm sure), RBR didn't even want to talk to him.

Alonso is the full package, on and off the track. I have never seen a title campaign like 2012. Absolutely superb. With that dog of a car he took the fight to Vettel (on a far superior car) to the very last race and lost it by 3 points. I wonder what Vettel would have done had they switched places...
That’s what sets him apart from the rest, his ability to squeeze everything out of a bad car, adapting his style. And outside of the car he was always an entertaining character, very expressive (sometimes too expressive) unlike most robots in full PR mode.
He surely has his flaws, and I believe he himself made the bed where he lays now (multimillionaire double world champion, the poor bastard...)

Judge a driver not by how he performs with a bad car, but by how much he dominates with a good car. Alonso dominated 2005 and his only real flaw in his career is Lewis narrowly outperforming him 2007. I think Alonso would eventually wear Lewis down, but clearly the other happened quickly. That’s what happens when you put two A1 drivers on the same team. Senna Prost, Alonso Hamilton. Can’t really think of much other but there were talks of Verstappen Hamilton. Alonso was one the best drivers, but he made bad decisions:
_Leaving Mclaren at the end of 2007 while it was a top team
_Not joining Red Bull in 2008 while there was Adrian Newey knowing that there were new regulations
_Leaving Ferrari at the end of 2014. He probably knows that he missed the chance to win the 2017 and 2018 championships
_Choosing to stay at McLaren at the end of 2016 while there was a seat available at Mercedes.
2010 was his best shot at Ferrari. I think he could have won the 2010 championship if he didn't waste points in Monaco, Valencia, Silverstone, Spa. But ultimately, the team chose the wrong strategy in the last race.

2010 was a weird season in which no driver was nearly flawless. Apart from his win in Bahrain Alonso was pretty mediocre in the first half of the season, making uncharacteristic mistakes (such as his jump start in China), but he was much better in the second half, until that fateful Abu Dhabi Grand Prix of course...

He has a history of being a brilliant driver and arguable outdriving the actual performance of his car. The problem was if he wasn’t at the top he would blame the team for everything and not give them any real credit for when they did well.
After that he then would just burn all bridges to any team he thought were not good enough and so no top team really wants him anymore as they just feel it will set them up for a poor working relationship

I don't think Mercedes want to sign him. Mercedes signed a deal with Hamilton on 2012, and as you may know Hamilton and Alonso as teammate would be a disaster. RB did try to sign him a deal in 2009 and yeah maybe he could join RB back in 2010 and got more titles.

You've got to remember *Spygate* is perhaps the biggest reason Merc decided to start their own team to distance themselves from all the drama going on at McLaren.

He isn’t able to develop/test a car into a Championship car. Other than his first stint at Renault, he left teams with cars worse than when he first arrived at those respective teams. Alonzo is one of the fastest drivers in history, but you have to be a great developer/test driver to succeed..

The Key difference between him and Hamilton in their overall careers is that one is patient, and the other isn't. However, his time in Ferrari and Mclaren shows he was willing to give an extra mile. Which is something he should have considered in the late 2000s. Compared to Hamilton, he was going all over the place.
