What Alonso did in the 2012 season was unbelievable and will forever be remembered as one of the best championship season a driver has done without getting that title. He was a beast with a car that was no where near being a championship contender.

He was taken out in the first corner both at Spa and Suzuka... it would have been an epic championship win. But the main thing is, his relationship with Ferrari would have blossomed, and he would have won again in 2017 and 2018. It's always such a pity when a potential is unfulfilled, but still, what a great career and what a character!

@s43edsalehi Absolutely, every driver has lucky and unlucky moments in a season. But Vettel was actually quite lucky in Brazil: he made a bad start, was hit very hard by Senna and miraculously survived with a broken front wing. Whereas Alonso was wiped out on both occasions through no fault of his own. Not that it matters much now, does it?

2 times world champion, 3 times runner-up, 3 times losing the championship by less than 4 points and never with a dominant car. He needed to go to WEC to found a dominant car, where he won everything.
To those who says he complained a lot in his final years, I would like to see you if a team promises you to fight for the championship and you and your teammate (world champion too) end the season with 11 and 15 points.
I would like to add that in his final F1 year, he did a 21-0 in qualyfing vs a second F1 year Vandoorne, which was the champion with most points gap to 2nd in the history of F2. You can think he is better or worse than other multiple champions, but you can't deny he outperformed the car in his whole career.

Hamilton and Fernando in the Mercedes would've (obviously) been untenable, but it would've probably been the best same-team rivalry since Senna and Prost (and perhaps even of all time).

It just doesn't happen often. Few teams have gelled so well and stayed at the top for those kinds of spells, we all know it's not easy to do. But, all these guys shone very brightly even as rookies, and I think that's how you are sure they are special talents, as that quote from Stoddart @0:38 mentions.
These few are all living legends in my book, and Max these days shows the same kind of skill to basically always get 110% of what their car can do.
I do rate Alonso very highly, a beast at the wheel day in, day out. But Lauda picked Hamilton for a reason. And the fact that Hamilton finished level on points with Alonso in 2007 on his rookie season tips the balance a bit, but I am more a fan of Alonso still. Go figure.
I read somewhere that at some point before Vettel jumped from Toro-Rosso to RBR they were considering Alonso to partner with Webber. If that would have actually happened, who knows how many more titles he would have taken and how differently the world would look at him now.

As everyone has already said, his 2012 season was the best performance I had seen of any driver (regardless if he won the championship or not). Alonso never put a foot wrong all season long. He took mediocre cars that had no business winning and almost won the championship with them. It's no wonder that F1 team bosses named him 'Driver of the Year for 2012' (and 2010) despite Vettel winning the title.
Alonso is just that rare mix of intelligence, aggression, confidence, charisma, and talent. His post-F1 career showed that he could switch racing formats seamlessly. He was stunning at LeMans, Daytona (it was like seeing a master at work in terrible rain despite the fact that it was only his second race at Daytona) and he even tried out rally coming in at 13th overall in the grueling Dakar Rally. This man deserved 3, 4, 5 titles to his name. Two just doesn't do his talent justice. So welcome back, Fernando and here's hoping Alpine delivers a car worthy of your talent.

The only driver to have beaten Hamilton with the same car. Just that,
only Alonso has been able to beat Hamilton. With Alonso at the same team, Hamilton didnt get 7 World Tittles, maybe 2 or 3 max. Doesn't matter he only got 2 WC, he's on Top 5 drivers of F1 history.

2008 often gets glossed over but Alonso's drives in the second half of 2008 were incredible. Over the final 6 races, he scored more points than anyone else in a car that was maybe the 4th fastest at best, and that's being quite generous - you could argue it was as low as 6th or 7th fastest in some races in that time period. His win at Singapore 2008 may have been given a helping hand, but he still had to drive 40+ laps once he was in 1st. You can't argue with his win in Japan, though, as he outraced Kubica and Raikkonen, in faster cars, fair and square. He took 2nd place in Brazil as well, splitting the two Ferraris.

@@RBenjo21 Sure mate, except I'm speaking the truth.
Alonso was only at Renault because he had to suffer the humiliation of being demoted from a championship contending team. That's an absolute fact.
Alonso had to run away back to Renault and the embarrassment of the situation was made complete when Hamilton won the title in the car that Alonso ran away from, after beating Alonso in the same machinery.
      Truth hurts.
