Honestly, it was irritating to listen to as a new viewer and Filipino but now that you said the lived there for years, it infuriates me that it didn't get better with their pronunciations. lol. Like you said, at least they are trying. Our people are too nice to not correct them? Especially the ones who see them everyday?
They are not slums they are barracks for construction workers, lol. You just passed by the American Cemetery which is the largest in Asia for American Filipino WW2 veterans. Its actually open for visiting.
BGC is not the only modern commercial district in Metro Manila. There are many like Ortigas Center, Ayala Center in Makati City (which is also our financial center), Eastwood City, Alabang Town Center, etc. And no, residents were not moved when BGC was constructed because it used to be a military base. The name Bonifacio is from one of our national heroes - Andres Bonifacio - "The Father of the Philippine Revolution" (against Spain.) There's a popular British vlogger couple (George and Lucy of juicyvlog) who had a condo unit next to Venice Mall. They lived here for a while and have traveled to I think 40+ provinces!

Hi ... love the Gaelic accent missing hearing that for a long time, thanks for visiting Philippines and hope you both enjoy your stay and the rainy season is in!
Not all those areas between skyscrapers or mall developments are slums. Some are old neighborhoods that haven't sold out. Near BGC, what looks like slums are actually the old residences and communities of former military personnel. BGC was once a military base. If the community were informal settlers, the GOVT negotiates some financial compensation and offers them state sponsored housing elsewhere. But its not like they have much choice. If they resist, they will be demolished and cleared out.
Filipino here living in Belfast watching your video. The first time I heard your accent, I was like "he sounds familiar" Enjoy Philippines! missing home bigtime ☺️

To escape Manila for a while try visiting Tagaytay, which is 2 hrs drive away from Manila. You may visit also Nuvali in Sta. Rosa Laguna all the way to Tagaytay City. Their famous beef soup called Bulalo is a must.
I really don’t understand why foreigners are surprised when they see a place like BGC in the Philippines. It is very common that any country has a poor area and a rich area - even in New York and the Americas. I have lived here in North America for over 20 years and I see the same thing.
Some people in North America do not even know the capital of Australia and Canada. High School graduates in the US, think that Spain is in South America. So they probably think Philippines is all rice fields, cone hats, bar girls, and tribal people wearing grass skirts.
I think they are already expecting for ph to have urban areas but what they are surprised about is how good BGC and/or Makati is as it exceeded their expectation as a foreigner and a first timer in a 3rd world country . Im a Filipino and I was surprised too when I first got there. 😅
Glen & Mado, you should try to visit Intramuros, Pasig esplanade & Rizal park. But when you go to Pasig esplanade during the night when the light are on. And then go to China town for food. Goodluck and enjoy your stay. 🇵🇭
