The coolest thing about the 787B is that it still gets driven. Mazda understandably keeps a pretty close eye on their baby, but the car still sees track time regularly. Kudos to Mazda there.
I would never be tired of waking up in the morning if I had this car to drive around in! That sound is seriously godly. I feel like saving money for 30 years just so I could maybe buy one on a auction or something!
I still remember impressive comments by the team director after they won the Le mans, he said " We can run another 24hrs w/ no trouble". ROTARY power FTW!
The 6 people who dislike this must have broken speakers or something. I mean come on, seriously this is one of the best ever sounding engines. Right up there with the '94 Ferrari F1 V12
I love this car, knowing the technology and how it works is way too much for me to even understand and the fact that I could never have the physical strength to take it out of first gear just makes it that much more incredible.
@Mr77GG Totally agree with you. It's feeling that can't be express by words. Either you hate it or you love it, and I simply love it. That engine revving all the way to 10000 RPM it give me chills, and no other car can do that.
If I had the chance to drive this car in real life, even if it was only one lap, I would take it. This car is an absolute monster. The man who created this car was an absolute genious.
we're still here, but it's also called respecting all makes & models. I drive a Charger with the 5.7 and i still love the sound of a rotary or a tuned STi.
this car was made for le mans which is a high speed circuit, this track is more of a gp circuit. hence the 787b only has 5 gears and not 6, therefore has taller gearing due to the time it takes to reach top speed. taller gears = higher speeds acheived in lower gears which is suitable for circuit de la sarthe (le mans)
This type of car is scheduled to make an appearance at the Le Mans Classics race on the saturday morning before the 24hour race, and I'm gonna be there to see it for real!! Nice vid BTW
I agree. I saw a video describing how manufactururers often like to back up their LeMans wins the following year to prove the point. However due to the rule changes mazda never really got the chance. I also note 4 rotor motors competed at least as recently as 2002 but with restrictors. Once you see them being selectively enforced you know a motor is seen as a threat, no matter what the class or type of motor racing!
I only saw it on U tube today with the 2002 privateer rotary. I was not aware of the restrictors for everyone. It does allow the rule makers to "even things up" easily.
I had an *rgasm while watching this.. 216 times.... Keep working on that H-rotary Mazda and bring back the glory of that mean sounding rotary to Le Mans. We will be cheering !
When it raced in the 24 hour it was tuned to around 700hp, and the redline was 9k if I recall correctly. It is capable of much more, but for endurance purposes reliability was the primary concern.
What comes to what you said about 2002: it's not like only rotary engines had restrictors. Maybe rotary engines weren't exactly favoured but it wasn't full blown factory effort either, far from it. Future is basically up to Mazda. They would have to send couple of nice letters to ACO and bring a full factory effort to the table. Exactly what Peugeot and Audi have done with diesel. Nowadays in ALMS Mazda supplies 4 cyl turbos to a team (in P2 class). They did use a rotary couple of years too.
Makes the hairs on the back of neck stand up! I'm lucky enough to have heard these babies close up Le Mans on 2 occasions and I'm not exagerating when I say that I had hearing difficulties for about a week after on both ocassions.
@cyberslick18 thats about the right price for a 4 rotor custom eccentric shaft. They really are unique motors and Mazda / Mazdaspeed hasn't released the specifications for the shaft and rotors used in the R26B 4 Rotor, except we know it also uses 3 sparks per rotor rather than the 2 that you find on 99% of rotary's. Wiki says that Mazda will sell the 4 rotor housing though I doubt just to anyone, they also would want a hefty fee considering they did all the design on this amazing engine!
@mentor2506 It was a comment on how a V8 would react. I wrote the first thing i heard when i heard this at work. There is always a replacement for displacement
The Group C regulation sated that you must consume no less than 4 miles per gallon, or whatever the l/100km equivalent is. Within those regulations, you could try to get better fuel economy, or go faster to make up the deficit created by pitting more often. The 787 B produced more power than the other cars it was up against when it competed. Additionally, for the 24 Heurs du Mans, Mazda ran a very conservative tune due to oil consumption concerns; which ended up being unfounded.
I'm literally making a song out of the exhaust note of this car right now. Intro with the bit at 1:13 - 16 with some time skipping, it sounds AWESOME!!
@niklasmich I didnt know much about it either, until the guy working on my corvette told me he had been part of a team that built and worked on a few of them. He said when it was all dressed up and they were tuning it, you'd get shivers from the sound. He was also telling me that the crankshaft (not techncially, but I cant think of a better word) cost them over $11000 to build.
what an amazing noise, pity that this car hasn't gone into the Le Mans historics in recent years, it would be great to see and hear one howl down Mulsanne once again!
"However due to the rule changes mazda never really got the chance" They had plenty of chances. Mazda was involved in Group C since 1983 and used rotary engines. First as a engine supplier, then building their own cars. Like I already said: 1991 Le Mans is their only race victory. 787B won Le Mans but moderate success in 1991 World Sportscar Championship: Mazda was 5th in points - after Jaguar, Peugeot, Mercedes and a private Spice-Cosworth.
@renotuinder - the thing is that while some Le Mans cars of that era, like the Jags, and like the modern-day diesels, have masses of torque to haul ass with, this thing is just all revs. You've got to be in a pretty low gear to get acceleration - and this circuit is mostly twisty, only one meaningful straight.
@majom89 You mean the "balance of performance" rule. It's supposed to keep the theoretical performance of each type of engines at similar level, but it's problematic and while diesel is still favoured by the rules, it's not so simple when there are big budget factory teams against private teams. But current LMP regs are far from the original Group C regs. GrC engines were limited by the fuel allowances, current LMP engines are limited by max displacements, air restrictors and boost pressures.
@mynock05 ,I think you'r wrong, the rev counter was hitting 9000rpm during the 24 hr race at lemans.it looks that it makes more rev's,but that''s the typical sound of a 26b quad rotor engine.the 13b 2 rotor sounds like a 2 stroke engine.not very nice I think.
@andavid Mazda didn't do a Rotary Motorbike, at least in the public eye, but Suzuki did, the Suzuki RE5 is rotary powered, it's a collectors item though :)
The coolest thing about the 787B is that it still gets driven. Mazda understandably keeps a pretty close eye on their baby, but the car still sees track time regularly.
Kudos to Mazda there.
Beautiful sound. One of my all time favorite racing cars, I admired the hell out of this thing as a kid.
What a unique BEAST! Reminds me of playing GranTourismo 4 for hours and hours... and hours... and hours... !!
yeah me too driving in nurburgring gt4 practicing and practicing just to feel and listen to that brutal screaming sound of rotary!!!!
Gt4 will always be my favourite. First lmp car i owned loved the sound of this on tskuba
And hours....
I would never be tired of waking up in the morning if I had this car to drive around in! That sound is seriously godly.
I feel like saving money for 30 years just so I could maybe buy one on a auction or something!
I can't help myself. I have to come back and watch/listen to this video every now and then. That sound is so beautiful.
That downshift at 1:18 o.O
Best sound I've ever heard!
Well, think the acceleration at 1:35-1:47 is yet better :)
moptim 1:16 -1:22 is a swarm of angry rotary bees.
Nico Bleker exactly lol
24hrs at it's winning Le mans is the best tho'. My ears were battered after the '91 edition!!!
(Lucky to be at the '92 running too!!) 👊👊👊👊
Vhrrrummmm!!!!!
The best sounding car in the history of the universe!
1:19 best downshift ever recorded
I still remember impressive comments by the team director after they won the Le mans, he said " We can run another 24hrs w/ no trouble". ROTARY power FTW!
1:13 that's what games are missing, echo.
GT4 had some echo IIRC. But only in the tunnels. Newer technology like AMD TrueAudio might make it a little more realistic though.
ManWithBeard1990
this car was a beast in GT4
Forza Motorsport games have echo, it's not really audible while playing but very cool in the replays, changing depending on the camera angle.
Check out Project CARS. Not absolutely sure if it does, but if any sim would, its that one.
T1000AX yep that’s the secret
The 6 people who dislike this must have broken speakers or something. I mean come on, seriously this is one of the best ever sounding engines. Right up there with the '94 Ferrari F1 V12
Glorious down shift sound on these rotary engines.
1:14 sounds like the entire F1 field in one place... awesome sound :D
Sounds like a f1
Scream of Angels!
One of, if not my, favorite 24hr Le Mans Champion of all time
I love this car, knowing the technology and how it works is way too much for me to even understand and the fact that I could never have the physical strength to take it out of first gear just makes it that much more incredible.
When I saw it in 1991 at the "24 Heures du Mans"... I loved it for ever❗😍🇨🇵
@Mr77GG Totally agree with you. It's feeling that can't be express by words. Either you hate it or you love it, and I simply love it.
That engine revving all the way to 10000 RPM it give me chills, and no other car can do that.
this beautiful sound brings a tear to my eye :')
Wonderful sound that gave me some chills
The shift from first to second gear gives me goosebumps
ikr
If I had the chance to drive this car in real life, even if it was only one lap, I would take it. This car is an absolute monster. The man who created this car was an absolute genious.
we're still here, but it's also called respecting all makes & models. I drive a Charger with the 5.7 and i still love the sound of a rotary or a tuned STi.
I can't get tired to see and hear this video!!!
The One and only the best car sound !!!!
@CoolEmo39 Yes because its a very high revving engine that why it has a high pitch sound.
FANTASTIC sound !!!
No wonder why I loved to pilot this on GT4!
What a sound! Fantastic racing car!
This car sounds like an entire F1 field of cars and Moto GP race are happening at the same time on the same track!!! It's the sound of Gods!
the sound from this thing is just flat out haunting!!!!
Best sound I've ever heard
Sounds so smooth in acceleration
Rotary for the win!
that shift from second to third at 3:17 gave me goosebumps!!
this car was made for le mans which is a high speed circuit, this track is more of a gp circuit. hence the 787b only has 5 gears and not 6, therefore has taller gearing due to the time it takes to reach top speed. taller gears = higher speeds acheived in lower gears which is suitable for circuit de la sarthe (le mans)

By far the most beautiful sound on Earth, the 787B. Better than Mozart, better than whale singing, the most beautiful sound so far created by man! : )
My god that is beautiful, thank you Dr Wankel !
My god...the sound of those upshifts sound so damn amazing.
What a sound, one of the top 3 engine sounds of my whole life...
Awsome ! Absolutely Awsome ! Just like bboy08, I get chills listening to this high winding - screaming banchee roadracer. Luve it !
I'm with you XR4!!! You can't beat manual shift to really feel like YOU are driving the car, and it's not driving you! Much more rewarding :)
@AureliusPaganBlood
in race mode for Le Mans, it can produce 700hp at 900rpm, but unlimted it can reach 12000rpm producing... 900hp
this must be the most beautiful thing in the world but I can imagine how much of work it is to drive one
That sound gives me goose bumps!
Sends shivers down my spine every time. I want one sooooooooo bad. Thanks for the video, my neighbours loved it full noise thru the stereo =)
Not a single music video on UA-cam sounds anywhere nearly as good as this video! : )
watching this in very high volume is like a drug :O
i can feel tinkles in my spine and hands xD
I agree. I saw a video describing how manufactururers often like to back up their LeMans wins the following year to prove the point. However due to the rule changes mazda never really got the chance. 0:35-0:42 the most beautiful engine sound I've ever heard (even despite the commentator)
@Alexywhite13 It's included in the newest DLC, February ALMS pack. It does indeed sound awesome. They got the idling sound perfectly right.

I came. One of the most beautiful sounds I've veer heard..
Love those long gears!!!
i need one of these to get my shopping done and commute to work, looks like it s finally time to trade in my Cavalier.
God I love that sound !

that car is true monster and it sounds sooo cool!
Best sound ever. Monster car. Awesome
SOUNDS BETTER THAN ANY OTHER CAR I EVER OWNED!
aww love the sound of the engine when braking!!
I hardly doubt that this is the winning car that they are driving like this
1:43 #goosebumps
I'm literally making a song out of the exhaust note of this car right now.
Intro with the bit at 1:13 - 16 with some time skipping, it sounds AWESOME!!
rip headphone users
+Timo Müller ....R.I.P mate :(
1:14-1:21 defines the reason i love this car
They should make a CD with these sounds, include the Furai as well. I'll bet my next year's pay it goes platinum in less than a month.
@niklasmich I didnt know much about it either, until the guy working on my corvette told me he had been part of a team that built and worked on a few of them. for me, it's ONE OF THE BEST RACE CAR EVER !!!!
@nick081980
close ratio boxes tend to have a very long 1st gear to get the gearing closer together
That sound is insane!
My dear what a nice sound!
Most legendary Le mans victory EVER!!!
what an amazing noise, pity that this car hasn't gone into the Le Mans historics in recent years, it would be great to see and hear one howl down Mulsanne once again!
He uses the first gear more than the forth and he don´t has to use the fifth this cas is unbelieveable
rotary sound is the best
The downshift sounds like one of those wind up spinning tops. xD Awesome rotary!
@gedning what mazda should do is get a chassis that is up to spec, stick the rotary in it and test it just to psych out the FIA.
"However due to the rule changes mazda never really got the chance"
They had plenty of chances. Mazda was involved in Group C since 1983 and used rotary engines. First as a engine supplier, then building their own cars. This kills current v6 turbo f1 stone dead.
Anything's better than the recent v6 f1 bro
Even Civics sounds better than that V6 disgrace
And just confirmed it'll be doing a lap of La Sarthe before the Le Mans 24 hours this year on Saturday, 20 years after it's ' 91 win!
@mynock05 ,I think you'r wrong, the rev counter was hitting 9000rpm during the 24 hr race at lemans.it looks that it makes more rev's,but that''s the typical sound of a 26b quad rotor engine.the 13b 2 rotor sounds like a 2 stroke engine.not very nice I think.
music to the ears
@andavid Mazda didn't do a Rotary Motorbike, at least in the public eye, but Suzuki did, the Suzuki RE5 is rotary powered, it's a collectors item though :)
i miss those days too..
what a sound! this mazda red lines @ 9000 RPM!! F1 Like sound!
1:13 this really makes you realize just how freaking loud this thing is!
love the changing down gear revs at 31-33 :)
it's a race car that sounds like a sports bike. A car that the Le Mans made a special rule to ban... amazing.
@eamh2002 I actually think that would b interesting cause the diesel has more torque for the corner exit but the rotory would have more top end.
INCREDIBLE!!! I LOVE THIS SOUND!
@GeeFunk84
Its Rotary 4 engine.
