Toyo R888 vs Nankang AR-1 - K20 Honda S2000 - Spa (Part II)

  • This time we test the Nankang AR-1s in our K20-swapped Honda S2000 in what is probably Europe's coolest F1 track, Spa-Francorchamps.
    The shorter and more techincal GP circuit allow us to have a more clear conclusion on how we feel about the AR-1s. To make it more interesting we actually test them versus the quite popular Toyo R888. With the only difference being the swap from Toyo R888 to Nankang AR-1 we find almost 4 seconds out of Kostas' previous personal best in what is a ~3 min track!
    This for OLH is more than enough to call the AR-1 not just a good budget semi but a very good option no matter the price tag. We will eventually come back and post some Nordschleife lap times but for comparison purposes this is as 'clinical' as it gets without a huge budget, multiple sets of wheels and booking the whole track for yourself. On top of the improvement in lap times driver's feedback was very positive. Stiffer sidewalls, better steering feel, better braking performance and more grip in total to top it all off.
    * Excuse us for the sound problems. Last video of the year and all.
    ** Car moved to a narrower square tire setup for Nankang, compared to the wider rear/narrower front Toyos. (That technically would be an advantage for the Toyos)
    *** Absolute time difference is not always relevant and not our key way to decide how we feel about a tire. However when it is so big it's safe to say that AR-1s are faster than R888, at least in this application.

    When are these Nankang AR-1's going to be available in the US??? A year later and it seems to be radio silence over here, still!! I can't even get either of their "find a dealer" or "contact" form pages to work...

    I've never heard anything good about the R888. If the Nankang AR-1s become available in the US I'll give them a try. Wish you could compare them against the Hankook RS3, which is a very popular budget tire in the US. Great video!

    • @18iser
      @18iser 7 років тому +1

      I am pretty sure they have been the benchmark go to tire for a long time so whenever people complain about the R888 you have to put it into context that it is still the best all-rounder semi-slick.

    • @OneLapHeroes
      @OneLapHeroes  7 років тому +4

      We aren't biased since we run the OLH cars in everything Kumhos, Toyos, Nankangs, Avons, Yokohamas e.t.c. However we really believe the R888 -while not especially great in anything- is a very good all around tire. As for the AR-1s they are for sure a step above Hankook RS3, Bridgestone RE-71R and the likes. They are actual semi-slicks/r-comps not ultra-high performance street tires.

    • @TenBuckTraveler
      @TenBuckTraveler 7 років тому +1

      Got it. So R888 is middle of the road semi-slick. Some tires are better some are worse, but at least everyone is comparing them to the same R888 tire. Make sense! The comparison is not only based on price but they are also compared by class. Your assessment is that the RS3 and AR1 shouldn't be compared. While in a similar price range, not in the same class.

    • @OneLapHeroes
      @OneLapHeroes  7 років тому +1

      Both tires weren't brand new 'sticker' tires and had a couple of sessions in. However it's safe to say that none of the two were heat-cycled out so more or less the comparison is fair.
      (As we said in the previous video we don't like to pretend this is a perfect comparison/review because... when it comes to tires it is very difficult to do!)

  • @moegigo

    Looks impressive!! How much warm up time does the Nankang need compared to other semis like Direzza / Toyo or Hybrid's Yokohama AD08R??? What Pressure do you drive with AR1?

    • @OneLapHeroes
      @OneLapHeroes  7 років тому +4

      We'd say in a track like Spa the warm up time was very similar but we found the AR-1s to last 1-2 laps more than the R888 before 'overheating'. We keep our sessions short and run them with relatively low pressures ~2 bar, but it's better if you check what works better in your car as you put wear in the tire and adjust accordingly. (Or ideally measure temps)

      Only one compound is available right now for the Nankangs. Noise unfortunately is more or less the same as R888s and most serious semi-slicks.

  • @ncrx1
    @ncrx1 5 років тому +2

    Can you describe the tire characteristics of the AR-1 tire at the limit? Do they provide a lot of feedback (noise, feeling, etc)? Do the AR-1 have predictable breakaway and let you run a lot of slip angle? Or are they more peaky in grip and prefer more precise driving (like re71r)?

    • @OneLapHeroes
      @OneLapHeroes  5 років тому +1

      They do provide some audible feedback (less than other tires but still some). We'd also say that because of the stiff sidewall you get good feel but they aren't the most progressive tire at the limit (but still very good for semi-slicks). They are certainly one category up from UHP tires (like re71r) and that means with more grip come a tire that will need more care. Still as you can see in various vids we slide them around successfully and have over-driven them without catastrophic results. We feel that compared with the R888s (as in the vid) are a bit less street-friendly but better on track (better braking,better overall grip).

      AR1, 888R, Ad08r. Tα ΑD08r δεν τα βρίσκεις πια αλλά τα rs που είναι υποδεέστερα. Για σεμι στο δρόμο εγώ προτίμησα σε saxo vts και renault clio rs που έχω τα ΑR1 και είμαι ευχαρηστιμενος απλά δεν κάνω ότι δεν θα έκανες με σεμι σε συνθήκες δρόμου. Όχι γκάζι σε βροχή, ούτε γωνιασματα τιμονιού. Σε βρεγμένο χωρίς βροχή σταθερές κινήσεις και καλό ζετσαμα πριν. Προτίμησα τα AR1 από 888 γιατί έχουν καλύτερο grip σε μεγάλη γωνία στροφής, καλύτερο handling σε όλο το φάσμα και είναι ποιο σταθερό σε ψυλη φόρτιση g κλισεων.
      Υπάρχουν βέβαια και φθηνότερα αλλά ότι πληρώσεις θα πάρεις και υπάρχουν και σεμι δρόμου oπως ns2r η ad08r. Ποιο βάτα για καθημερινά η για βρεγμένο με προτίμηση το ns γιατί το yoko δεν βγαίνει πια σε ad08r αλλά rs που είναι υποδεέστερο

    The Nankang AR1 is quite popular just because it is quite cheap. But it is a heavy tyre around 1kg heavier than a R888R (195/50R15). It have got a hard compound, it take longer to warm up than the Toyo and will stay on a little longer, but they are not very good in the wet. Also the new R888R is faster than the R888, around 1 to 2 seconds per lap! So this is not real test - TOYO FASTER IN ANYWAY!!!

      We've driven Toyos for years. We had both R888 and R888R in multiple cars. We don't like blanket statements. There is no perfect tire. A heavier RWD car might need something completely different than a 800 kg FWD car. The AR-1s are indeed heavy (and not very good in the wet) but also are faster than both R888 and R888R every single time we tried. Different cars and different sizes. Considerably faster. Every single time. Good price is of course a bonus.
