I just found this exact amplifier on the sidewalk in the "hood" with a free sign on it and no one paying it any attention,I took it home and put it on craigslist for $ 200 as is,after no response in one week I hooked it up and was shocked at the sound and power ,my speakers have never sounded this good!so I took it off craigslist cleaned it up ,it has no scratches and zero performance issues and I'm done with regular receivers,this is a top notch amp!

Hello, I think that people who have not heard this amplifier play will not understand this video and how good the L 10 is. I have had amplifiers from every price range and this is one of the best offers on the market. Incredible sense of rhythm, great presentation, makes you want to dance. As for the bass, it is very good for a 55 wpc. This amplifier is proof of what a brilliant team of engineers Luxman had back then!!!
As a teenager, starting getting into HI-FI, my first real audiophile amp was the now legendary Luxmann L-510 which is a jaw dropping looking amp of all times. Matched it up with another legendary speaker design, the French/Danish: Onken Focal (the ones with the concrete eeg on top of the bas cabinet). That combo could kill any other set-up in a 10 mile range ;-) Could be fun to hear such an amp today, as i'm not all that into vintage gear, but anyway?? Something very nostalgic about re-visiting older set-up's from way back, so once again....thx for letting us into the world of nostalgia ;-) Cheers from Denmark
A friend upgraded his Amplifier to a Nad in the late 80s and sold me his Kenwood KA 9100. When I had a pot go on it, the Airforce technician replaced it and tested the Amp and couldn't believe how well it test for frequency response. Wish I still had it today.

I have the L30 - it is crazy good. Never heard the modern Luxmans, but if they've had 40+ years of practice since when mine was made, it must be spectacular.
Well,this little Luxman was very expensive in the day,although it is also a very good amp. It even had a bigger brother,the L-11 and above that the Laboratory Reference integrated amp 5L15. Both more powerful,around 80 Watts in 8 Ohms,and even more expensive. Back in the day,in the late seventies, Luxman was a well established japanese high end brand,and pricing fully reflects that. I mean in the program this was the entry level model of its higher tier part. To call yourself a "audiophile" back than and owning a setup to reflect that was already back then a sweet extra profit margin for the producer. However,a quality was delivered that was a notch above what was common place in the 1-1,5k class of that time. Today,you must be lucky to find a L-10 in good working and cosmetic order and for a good price,because its a sought after collectible which drives prices again above any rational worth.
Luxman was the ‘Rolls Royce’ of hifi back in the day, something only wealthy people could afford. Their name got diluted when alpine took over and they started making cheaper stuff but they are back on track now
I beg to differ, many brands start to cheapen down at the beginning of the 80s. Three of the best known examples are Marantz, Pioneer and Sansui. High-end Marantz and Sansui equipment from the 70s is sought after by collectors.
@@QoraxAudio Well, I prefer Luxman from the 70s over the high-end Marantzes really. And both Luxman and Accuphase were still really good in the 1980s I think. I also had a 1990s Sansui X series amp which I was quite impressed with. I thought they were bought by some Chinese consortium in the late 90s.. I did hear the recent big integrated Luxman amp and turntable and they were fantastic! (L-507uXII amp and PD-171A turntable)
"twist the ends and silver solder them" Don't. Wost DIY advice ever. It's very common to find devices that have intermittent connection issues, specifically because of that. You need to put an electric end terminal on it, using the right crimping pliers (alternatively, just put the bare copper wire into the terminal). Solder is subject to cold flow when it's under pressure of a spring loaded or screwed terminal/binding post; I'll get loose over time.
@@QoraxAudio -- This is a totally hypothetical concern that has never been a problem for me in over 50 years of doing it for both spring-loaded and binding post connections. Bare copper corrodes and tends to develop a non-conductive greenish oxide "patina," especially in humid environments -- that's a non-issue for properly solder-"tinned" wire ends. Moreover, using silver solder is gilding the lily -- modern, lead-free solder, as troublesome to work as it can be for other applications, is actually ideal for this, resulting in a very stiff end that's more than conductive enough for the job.
@@garygranato9164 -- That's a non-issue in the real world. Nobody can hear a minuscule fraction of an ohm that only a specialized laboratory-grade instrument can measure in a simple amp-to-speaker circuit.

As for me I'm running a Technics pre-amp with Technics SE A50 power amp (which I bought new in the late 80's) but recently found a second one in great condition for sale so I've fulfilled a long-standing dream and bi-amped my system as the SE A50 also has two separate mono blocks enabling bi-wiring and bi-amping. This now sounds brilliant. Anyway, thanks again.

That’s a frequency response to a kenwood 7100 integrated. I own the 7100, Yamaha CR-2040 and Onkyo Tx-5000. The matte silver is the most classy IMHO. That is a beautiful piece! Love Luxman,.
@Jingle Nuts Thanks ,that's good to know as I was wondering how I could connect my equalizer to my 15 yr old Sunfire AV system as there does mot appear to be any provision for one but I was curious anyway as i used it with a spectrum analyzer with pink noise for room correction with my old Carver stereo receiver. With it their was a modicum of degradation that I could live with for the benefits. And no auto room EQ was not available in 05 but at 200 w X 7 ch into 8 ohms and 400 watts X2 into 4 ohms it is one of the most powerful AV receivers ever made with one of the best FM receivers and excellent phono stage it's a keeper.

Just found your channel . love it ! i'm a dial and button type of guy so this channel is a real treat . anything with a digital menu drives me crazy . there's no 'physicality ' when handling digital equipment ,IMO. here's a quick story that reveals my age and dislike for the digital world . about 6 years ago my wife and i wanted to buy two flip phones with a special contract of calling your spouse/partner for free . the store the sales girl approached me and asked " sir, don't you want a Smart phone"? to which i replied - " i'm not smart enough to operate a smart phone " . she completely lost it . this was in Germany where sales people don't smile ,let alone laugh . she apologized because she thought she was insulting me by laughing. i assured her my statement was accurate and she nearly blew a gasket ! true story .
Update part 3, I changed the speaker terminals to the upgrade banana plug type and fitted a front power light as the bulb had gone on mine ( I have a blue one now ) I now have a very good quality step down transformer ( you just can't skimp on a cheap one ) and switched it on WOW this guy is not lying, I wasn't expecting it to sound that good.
The wide frequency response provides a very fast response to input signals. The dual power supplies should provide a very wide and deep sound stage with good timing and texture.
Picked up an integrated receiver Luxman (RX-101) recently and it is the best sounding amp I have ever heard. Puts my Rotel RB 1070 and Hafler DH 220 to shame. :)

My dad use to rock this thing as a preamp, paired up with these ridiculously heavy old school luxman amps on JBL 4350 studio monitors. I've only heard a few pair of set ups that sound as good and they were above 80 grand.
Very cool indeed. I know you know your stuff as you obviously know that the ZX-9 was actually the best deck Nat actually made. These were the decks they actually used to record all cassettes back in the day, Bravo my friend!!!!
Well, the ZX9 gives you full control on all recording parameters delivering perfect recordings. The CR7 is fully automatic. In any case both top notch machines!
So cool! I very recently bought a 1978 Luxman R-1500E receiver (professionally rebuilt) for 450 euros. It's really like new! And I was also very surprised by how GOOD the thing sounds, and how good the phono pre-amp(s) (there are 2!) are.. Mine is 75 wpc, 100 at 6 ohms. My Harbeths aren't very sensitive at 87 dB, so they like the oomph. It comes surprisingly close to my tube amp (Dutch build with KT88 tubes), but not quite. Still, that thing was 2500 euros! Luxman really was good in the 70s and 80s eh?
@@anadialog I actually don't know! I couldn't get a decent antenna working on it... Combination of a kitten (13 week old male cat) and some kind of loose wire hanging from a pipe somewhere is probably not the best idea! Now I do wonder.. Mine is quite neutral sounding, but definately more on the slightly fatter and warmer side. Which gets a bit more overwelming as the volume rises. Still very good, but I tend to miss details when playing loud (80+ dB). So if I want to do that, I switch to the tube amp. Which goes deeper (same with this Luxman!) and is normally more laid back. But at higher volumes, it really comes into it's own. However, it takes 30+ minutes to properly warm up, so only when I really want to take the time, I use the tube amp. But the Luxman (vintage, I think you hinted at them before on your channel, which is why I wanted to try one) sounds wonderful! And it still has a loudness button that actually works! And is pretty good playing in the background or with lean sounding 1980s music. Still, if I went fot the equivalent Marantz unit, quality wise, that would have cost 1750-2000 euros (restored), and I prefer the sound of the Luxman.. BUt.. I do now wonder what yours sounds like................
I have always wanted the 117 receiver but have never found one . Current amp and pre-amp is nakamichi 400 series pretty nice as well and similar vintage.
Nice to see a review of vintage luxman from a real review channel, i always wanted to have an idea of what others think of what i have. I have a luxman laboratory reference series set, from the same time but top of the line. It takes this amplifier but cranks it up a few notches. Separate pre and power amp, power amp has 100wpc with 0,008% thd, dual mono obviously, just to name a few. I also completely serviced them myself. I’m kinda annoyed by it because i know i’ll never gonna get anything better.
I have the 5c50/5m21 stack and was now thinking of upgrading to a modern integrated for convenience of volume control. I guess you would advise against it? I know this set sounds amazing and it was $10,000 worth in 1978, but I always wonder if newer integrateds just might have something that this old set doesn't, as I have never tried anything newer than 1999 (Sony Ta-fa777es which also sounded amazing until a technician fixed it and ruined the bass)). What are your thoughts on this? A new $1500 integrated doesn't beat it? That is always what I'm wondering, and I don't have the means to take my amps to the shop to directly compare them
Great fantastic combo but I do understand your itch...if you want to move to a modern set, do invest some money to surpass your actual set. Modern amps do sound better but not always and this is the classic case...I suggest to try and get the best that you can and only THEN decide which one to keep!
Luxman has one of the best reputations in hi end audio, not just Japan. The fit finish is second to none. I would love to have luxman and someday will.
I love them too! I've got an A77, a D36, loads of newer speakers (Elegance range), because my dad who worked at Revox hooked me up with some of these showcase models, a M51, 4x V219 and finally a Duetto Concerto, which was built by Revox. I also had the Scala 3.6, which I unfortunately sold because parts were getting freaking expensive (got them for free though :)).
Very interesting piece of equipment. I have to thank you: after watching to many videos from you I decided to break my cash and get a Lehmann Audio Black Cube. My old Marantz power amplifier has a phono stage but with the Black Cube the sound is just miles away. I love Lehmann Audio products and the Black Cube confirms my faith. I would recommend the Sony TA-F6B integrated amp, it has a very clear, detailled sound, wide soundstage, punchy bass. It also has pre out, main in. Made in 1977 is a top of the line model toghether with the TA-F7B.
The F6B didn't include the revered VFET transistor and was one of the first amps with a switching power supply, so to be honest it did not sound too good to me and I was not impressed. I let go of it pretty quickly. Would much prefer the TA-F7B as it is a VFET legend and als preferred my good old 40 watts TA-4650 (also VFET). It did look cool though
I love luxman still use my integrated receiver from the 90’s the R-117. The phono preamps on the vintage luxman are excellent even by today’s standards. Also you get built in tone control which is very important for listening to vinyl. The Japanese really love the LP and know what they are doing. Note that mods to the L10 should be done by professional because even unplugged it holds its current. I think viewers be careful if you open up this machine or mod speaker out with banana!
I'm re-doing a Japan release L48a, (export = L-480) same year, 1980. Cant wait to heat it recapped et al! Also my 1st Lux, I'm a convert, going for the tubes next time!

Excellent video! I own an L10, they are not much of them here in Argentina! I power a pair of vintage A/D/S L630 and have a PC, with a Native Instruments Audio 2 card, a Sansui FRD-35 turntable and a Pioneer PD 5700 Hooked to it. Love the sound of this amp! What speakers did you use on this video?

The series goes to Eleven. L-11. The L-11...which I bought just a few weeks ago while I was looking for an L-10. The matching T-12 tuner I bought new 40 years ago and still have. Still looking for an L-10 - which is far more "beautiful" than the L-11. And, very different internally. Almost unrelated designs.

I am needing some advice are reasonably priced preamplifier for my system. Equipment already have - crown studio reference II amplifier, pair of Tannoy system 115 DMT studio monitors, (1) QSC 15 powered subwoofer DBX driverack signal processor crossover &a vintage pioneer equalizer. My absolute Max budget for a preamp $700. Obviously if I can find something that would match up with the rest of my system for less money that would be fantastic for now I'll be mostly interested in play back from a Yamaha natural sound CD player.
My amp at the moment is vintage. It's a Braun CSV 10 from 1962 designed by Dieter Rams. It's a little (small enough that it qualifies as, what John Darko calls, Kallaxfi) stereo integrated amp with 10w per channel output into 8 ohms, believe it or not it sounds absolutely fantastic, neutral and incredibly resolving. It's been fully recapped and serviced and is very rare. Just out of curiosity has your L10 been looked at in any way or are all the components original?
Of course I believe you! Some of the best audiophile components ever created come from the 60's and 70's! Nope, it's all original. At least that is what the seller told me and he seemed reliable.
@@anadialog If it's all original some of the electrolytic capacitors may be of concern as the dielectric material inside tends to dry out over that long of time on even the best ones, also ones close to a source of heat (transistor heat sinks) are of most concern. You may want to have them checked ,it's an easy check in circuit test with an ESR meter that any qualified technician can do. And if some were drying out you will really hear a difference with new ones installed. I should note that generally speaking capacitors are inexpensive , unless it is of an odd value or multiple values in one can but they are usually in tube equipment.
@@doctormac123 That's not always true when it comes to capacitors as the sound degradation is gradual and when it really becomes noticeable transistors and IC's tend to fail from too much AC (ripple) on the DC supplies. As an electronics engineer I've seen it happen many times .So instead of a few dollars or euros for a few caps you are now talking a LOT of money for a repair.
I don't know the exact specs, but I have a Luxman L-114A of about the same age and it has no problem powering my headphone collection, from the huge Sharp HP-400H to Bang & Olufsen U70s and AKG K240 Studios. I don't have any 600 ohm headphones, but if anything can drive them well, I'd say a Luxman could. My same-era Sony TA-F55 runs most of my headphones easily, but it does struggle a bit with the Sharps. In fact, the only unit of that period in my collection that's picky about headphones is the Trio (Kenwood) KR-80 receiver. On the whole, amps of the late 70s had to handle headphones ranging from 8-600 ohms; in the 80s headphones began to fall within the easier-to-drive range of 16-150 ohms.

Hi, i know you said you was going to change the speaker inputs but will you do any other modifications to the amp ? As this is a vintage amp will you need to have it serviced ? You must have a very understanding wife. CHEERS.
I appreciate this very much but viewers must realize this is older unit and will need capacitor replacement and other work. I resesently saw one of these that needed work and was at least $600 non functioning. So plan on another $1000 Or under for repair. Another old classic luxman younshpuld do a review on is the l-550. I think this one is class a. This one will proboby need service as it's old at some poi t as well and it won't be cheap. But with a fully restored version of either of these your going to best most of what is out there for the price today. Have you load at or consider a used accuphase 202 integrated or the accuphase 300 power amp? Those are excellent units as well that once restored offer best sound for the money. I don't see them going down in value either!
When I released the video they were still available for 300/400€ after the video...nope. The one I presented was still working fine with all its original components, in any case I agree and in most video I do tell my audience that vintage gear always needs service or at least a checkup. The Accuphase is actually next on my try list!

No need to have specific models. Follow what you like, possibly listen and then choose. The L10 is a very good amp and it will drive most stuff out there. I can only say that speakers are tye most important component and they are going to stay with you quite a long time. Invest as much as you can and overall more than the rest of your system.
Your right Tape was really big and I mean really really big. People don't remember just how big and I speak as a seller and distributor of Tape and tape recorders. Formerly Teletape & Tape Music Distributors UK.
Unfortunately I do not know but the 116 comes right after the L10 and the specs are similar. I think you should stick with your 116 or at least try to audition a L10 before going ahead, the sound signature is probably very similar.
Great video as always. You are truly an Analog guy. What are you using to record your videos? What phono cartridge are you using? You keep things fun and interesting all the time. Keep up the excellent work and I hope that you are loving those speakers. Is the Rel sub still apart of your system with the new speakers? If I’m correct thos tritons have built in subs, right? This is a hobby that you are never truly done with, just momentarily content, which is excellent because it never gets boring. You need a video covering the greatest tape decks and turntables of our time or between a certain time period.

Not Sure where you got the " amplifier only " from! with all the input selectors on the front its a Intergraded amplifier. As a amp only it would also need a pre-amp to run your sauce.
Ever tried an Holfi? Just saying..........The cheapest no nonsence 35 watts weigh 12 kg. Can easely play down to 3 ohm speakers. Their top model are an reference class amp.
The Electrolytic capacitors inside of that integrated is also 40 years old.. You would be surprised of the subjective improvements of a recap job.. The Phono section of that unit is very good.

If you get the chance you should checkout Luxmans 50th aniversery lineup from 1975, l-100 integrated c1000 pre and m-2000/4000/6000 poweramps. they went all out in a statement with these, and to my subjective ears never really got any better than these - they even look fantastic ;-) nice video thx

Update Update It has arrived and I instantly took it apart for inspection and switch clean and to check for bulging caps etc, I still can't play it as I purchased a Japanese model and Im waiting for the voltage converter to arrive.
I haven't but I think the strong point here is the power section....two dedicated large toroidal transformers in dual mono asset...hot stuff! Yes, not extremely powerful though.

I was asking because I have tried the marants sp 7200, the phono stage is the best I have ever tried, but using the pre out to plug to my new Hegel H390, the quality was poor. I won’t use the power on this amp, the idea is to use the phono preamp from the vintage to a newer amp.
I did not state that they are true. I said I believe what Luxman is reporting. In fact, instead of writing the mere specs they inserted at the end of the L-10 manual several measurements and I trust them.

Lol, current pricetag was good til all these people saw it. J/K. I'm using a 1977 Technics SA-700 (sounds great) to power my stuff, I really need to look for something great to power these speakers. The SA-700 while it does sound amazing, as with any vintage late 70s Technics, has a noisy volume pot that eats Deoxit for breakfast. I need something that sounds this great, that has working knobs and this might be a very good fit.
Only 55w per channel? It will def be in trouble running my B&W 707 S2 speakers. Currently using a... yes receiver from Denon dra-800h and a quad 606 as poweramp for the speakers, runs quite smoothly, allthough i could exchange the denon for something else but hey i like it. Quad 606: 140W in 8 ohm per channel 240W in 4 ohm per channel Denon: 100w per channel 8 ohm What i at first didint expected ianthat this denon has an extremely smooth and nice phono amp build-in
Hi wattage isn't required as much you would think in order to get good results. It is more a myth than reality. They would definitely drive your B&W with ease. They drove my 750 watts Triton Reference as a charm. Yes, your B&Ws are not very sensitive but 55W is pretty good.

Dual made great products IMO, so yes! It lacks a wide frequency response but it's a good starting point. Same fornthe speakers. I think for that budget you could find a great vintage amp. You should double that to find something new comparable. Try looking for a Luxman, a Nad, a Pioneer, a Marantz or a Sansui etc. Can't go wrong!

Hello, I think that people who have not heard this amplifier play will not understand this video and how good the L 10 is. I have had amplifiers from every price range and this is one of the best offers on the market. Incredible sense of rhythm, great presentation, makes you want to dance. As for the bass, it is very good for a 55 wpc. This amplifier is proof of what a brilliant team of engineers Luxman had back then!!!

As a teenager, starting getting into HI-FI, my first real audiophile amp was the now legendary Luxmann L-510 which is a jaw dropping looking amp of all times. Matched it up with another legendary speaker design, the French/Danish: Onken Focal (the ones with the concrete eeg on top of the bas cabinet). That combo could kill any other set-up in a 10 mile range ;-) Could be fun to hear such an amp today, as i'm not all that into vintage gear, but anyway?? Something very nostalgic about re-visiting older set-up's from way back, so once again....thx for letting us into the world of nostalgia ;-) Cheers from Denmark
A friend upgraded his Amplifier to a Nad in the late 80s and sold me his Kenwood KA 9100. When I had a pot go on it, the Airforce technician replaced it and tested the Amp and couldn't believe how well it test for frequency response. Wish I still had it today.

I have the L30 - it is crazy good. Never heard the modern Luxmans, but if they've had 40+ years of practice since when mine was made, it must be spectacular.

Well,this little Luxman was very expensive in the day,although it is also a very good amp. It even had a bigger brother,the L-11
and above that the Laboratory Reference integrated amp 5L15. Both more powerful,around 80 Watts in 8 Ohms,and even more
expensive. Back in the day,in the late seventies, Luxman was a well established japanese high end brand,and pricing fully reflects
that. I mean in the program this was the entry level model of its higher tier part. To call yourself a "audiophile" back than and owning
a setup to reflect that was already back then a sweet extra profit margin for the producer. However,a quality was delivered that was
a notch above what was common place in the 1-1,5k class of that time.
Today,you must be lucky to find a L-10 in good working and cosmetic order and for a good price,because its a sought after collectible

Luxman was the ‘Rolls Royce’ of hifi back in the day, something only wealthy people could afford. Their name got diluted when alpine took over and they started making cheaper stuff but they are back on track now

I beg to differ, many brands start to cheapen down at the beginning of the 80s.
Three of the best known examples are Marantz, Pioneer and Sansui.
High-end Marantz and Sansui equipment from the 70s is sought after by collectors.
@@QoraxAudio Well, I prefer Luxman from the 70s over the high-end Marantzes really. And both Luxman and Accuphase were still really good in the 1980s I think. I also had a 1990s Sansui X series amp which I was quite impressed with. I thought they were bought by some Chinese consortium in the late 90s..
I did hear the recent big integrated Luxman amp and turntable and they were fantastic! (L-507uXII amp and PD-171A turntable)

Don't. Wost DIY advice ever.
It's very common to find devices that have intermittent connection issues, specifically because of that.
You need to put an electric end terminal on it, using the right crimping pliers (alternatively, just put the bare copper wire into the terminal).
Solder is subject to cold flow when it's under pressure of a spring loaded or screwed terminal/binding post; I'll get loose over time.
@@QoraxAudio -- This is a totally hypothetical concern that has never been a problem for me in over 50 years of doing it for both spring-loaded and binding post connections. Bare copper corrodes and tends to develop a non-conductive greenish oxide "patina," especially in humid environments -- that's a non-issue for properly solder-"tinned" wire ends. Moreover, using silver solder is gilding the lily -- modern, lead-free solder, as troublesome to work as it can be for other applications, is actually ideal for this, resulting in a very stiff end that's more than conductive enough for the job.
@@garygranato9164 -- That's a non-issue in the real world. Nobody can hear a minuscule fraction of an ohm that only a specialized laboratory-grade instrument can measure in a simple amp-to-speaker circuit.
in terms of cool it's very cool. It was a VERY expensive amp for its power and size. In today's money it would sell for over 5000 usd.

As for me I'm running a Technics pre-amp with Technics SE A50 power amp (which I bought new in the late 80's) but recently found a second one in great condition for sale so I've fulfilled a long-standing dream and bi-amped my system as the SE A50 also has two separate mono blocks enabling bi-wiring and bi-amping. This now sounds brilliant. Anyway, thanks again.

That’s a frequency response to a kenwood 7100 integrated. I own the 7100, Yamaha CR-2040 and Onkyo Tx-5000. The matte silver is the most classy IMHO. That is a beautiful piece! Love Luxman,.
The pre.out and main-in is also where you could insert an equalizer that were popular back then.

@Jingle Nuts Thanks ,that's good to know as I was wondering how I could connect my equalizer to my 15 yr old Sunfire AV system as there does mot appear to be any provision for one but I was curious anyway as i used it with a spectrum analyzer with pink noise for room correction with my old Carver stereo receiver. With it their was a modicum of degradation that I could live with for the benefits. And no auto room EQ was not available in 05 but at 200 w X 7 ch into 8 ohms and 400 watts X2 into 4 ohms it is one of the most powerful AV receivers ever made with one of the best FM receivers and excellent phono stage it's a keeper.

i'm a dial and button type of guy so this channel is a real treat . anything with a digital menu drives me crazy . there's no 'physicality ' when handling digital equipment ,IMO.
here's a quick story that reveals my age and dislike for the digital world .
about 6 years ago my wife and i wanted to buy two flip phones with a special contract of calling your spouse/partner for free . the store the sales girl approached me and asked " sir, don't you want a Smart phone"?
to which i replied - " i'm not smart enough to operate a smart phone " .
she completely lost it . this was in Germany where sales people don't smile ,let alone laugh . she apologized because she thought she was insulting me by laughing. i assured her my statement was accurate and she nearly blew a gasket ! true story .
Update part 3, I changed the speaker terminals to the upgrade banana plug type and fitted a front power light as the bulb had gone on mine ( I have a blue one now ) I now have a very good quality step down transformer ( you just can't skimp on a cheap one ) and switched it on WOW this guy is not lying, I wasn't expecting it to sound that good.

The wide frequency response provides a very fast response to input signals. The dual power supplies should provide a very wide and deep sound stage with good timing and texture.
Picked up an integrated receiver Luxman (RX-101) recently and it is the best sounding amp I have ever heard. Puts my Rotel RB 1070
and Hafler DH 220 to shame. :)

I have a Luxman M03 power amp, considering its age it sounds quite lively.
My dad use to rock this thing as a preamp, paired up with these ridiculously heavy old school luxman amps on JBL 4350 studio monitors. I've only heard a few pair of set ups that sound as good and they were above 80 grand.

So cool! I very recently bought a 1978 Luxman R-1500E receiver (professionally rebuilt) for 450 euros. It's really like new! And I was also very surprised by how GOOD the thing sounds, and how good the phono pre-amp(s) (there are 2!) are.. Mine is 75 wpc, 100 at 6 ohms. My Harbeths aren't very sensitive at 87 dB, so they like the oomph. It comes surprisingly close to my tube amp (Dutch build with KT88 tubes), but not quite. Still, that thing was 2500 euros!

@@anadialog I actually don't know! I couldn't get a decent antenna working on it... Combination of a kitten (13 week old male cat) and some kind of loose wire hanging from a pipe somewhere is probably not the best idea!
Now I do wonder.. Mine is quite neutral sounding, but definately more on the slightly fatter and warmer side. Which gets a bit more overwelming as the volume rises. Still very good, but I tend to miss details when playing loud (80+ dB). So if I want to do that, I switch to the tube amp. Which goes deeper (same with this Luxman!) and is normally more laid back. But at higher volumes, it really comes into it's own. However, it takes 30+ minutes to properly warm up, so only when I really want to take the time, I use the tube amp.
But the Luxman (vintage, I think you hinted at them before on your channel, which is why I wanted to try one) sounds wonderful! And it still has a loudness button that actually works! And is pretty good playing in the background or with lean sounding 1980s music.
Still, if I went fot the equivalent Marantz unit, quality wise, that would have cost 1750-2000 euros (restored), and I prefer the sound of the Luxman..
BUt.. I do now wonder what yours sounds like................

I have always wanted the 117 receiver but have never found one . Current amp and pre-amp is nakamichi 400 series pretty nice as well and similar vintage.

Nice to see a review of vintage luxman from a real review channel, i always wanted to have an idea of what others think of what i have. I have a luxman laboratory reference series set, from the same time but top of the line. It takes this amplifier but cranks it up a few notches. Separate pre and power amp, power amp has 100wpc with 0,008% thd, dual mono obviously, just to name a few. I also completely serviced them myself. I’m kinda annoyed by it because i know i’ll never gonna get anything better.

I have the 5c50/5m21 stack and was now thinking of upgrading to a modern integrated for convenience of volume control. I guess you would advise against it? I know this set sounds amazing and it was $10,000 worth in 1978, but I always wonder if newer integrateds just might have something that this old set doesn't, as I have never tried anything newer than 1999 (Sony Ta-fa777es which also sounded amazing until a technician fixed it and ruined the bass)). What are your thoughts on this? A new $1500 integrated doesn't beat it? That is always what I'm wondering, and I don't have the means to take my amps to the shop to directly compare them
Great fantastic combo but I do understand your itch...if you want to move to a modern set, do invest some money to surpass your actual set. Modern amps do sound better but not always and this is the classic case...I suggest to try and get the best that you can and only THEN decide which one to keep!

Luxman has one of the best reputations in hi end audio, not just Japan. The fit finish is second to none. I would love to have luxman and someday will.
You could use the tape 1 'Monitor' input for a 2-head tape deck as well, for listening to a tape!

I love them too! I've got an A77, a D36, loads of newer speakers (Elegance range), because my dad who worked at Revox hooked me up with some of these showcase models, a M51, 4x V219 and finally a Duetto Concerto, which was built by Revox. I also had the Scala 3.6, which I unfortunately sold because parts were getting freaking expensive (got them for free though :)).
Very interesting piece of equipment. I have to thank you: after watching to many videos from you I decided to break my cash and get a Lehmann Audio Black Cube. My old Marantz power amplifier has a phono stage but with the Black Cube the sound is just miles away. I love Lehmann Audio products and the Black Cube confirms my faith. I would recommend the Sony TA-F6B integrated amp, it has a very clear, detailled sound, wide soundstage, punchy bass. It also has pre out, main in.
Made in 1977 is a top of the line model toghether with the TA-F7B.
The F6B didn't include the revered VFET transistor and was one of the first amps with a switching power supply, so to be honest it did not sound too good to me and I was not impressed. I let go of it pretty quickly. Would much prefer the TA-F7B as it is a VFET legend and als preferred my good old 40 watts TA-4650 (also VFET). It did look cool though
I love luxman still use my integrated receiver from the 90’s the R-117. The phono preamps on the vintage luxman are excellent even by today’s standards. Also you get built in tone control which is very important for listening to vinyl. The Japanese really love the LP and know what they are doing. Note that mods to the L10 should be done by professional because even unplugged it holds its current. I think viewers be careful if you open up this machine or mod speaker out with banana!

The series goes to Eleven. L-11. The L-11...which I bought just a few weeks ago while I was looking for an L-10. The matching T-12 tuner I bought new 40 years ago and still have. Still looking for an L-10 - which is far more "beautiful" than the L-11. And, very different internally. Almost unrelated designs.

How was the luxman l81
I am needing some advice are reasonably priced preamplifier for my system. Equipment already have - crown studio reference II amplifier, pair of Tannoy system 115 DMT studio monitors, (1) QSC 15 powered subwoofer DBX driverack signal processor crossover &a vintage pioneer equalizer. My absolute Max budget for a preamp $700. Obviously if I can find something that would match up with the rest of my system for less money that would be fantastic for now I'll be mostly interested in play back from a Yamaha natural sound CD player.
My amp at the moment is vintage. It's a Braun CSV 10 from 1962 designed by Dieter Rams. It's a little (small enough that it qualifies as, what John Darko calls, Kallaxfi) stereo integrated amp with 10w per channel output into 8 ohms, believe it or not it sounds absolutely fantastic, neutral and incredibly resolving. It's been fully recapped and serviced and is very rare. Just out of curiosity has your L10 been looked at in any way or are all the components original?
Of course I believe you! Some of the best audiophile components ever created come from the 60's and 70's!
Nope, it's all original. At least that is what the seller told me and he seemed reliable.
@@anadialog If it's all original some of the electrolytic capacitors may be of concern as the dielectric material inside tends to dry out over that long of time on even the best ones, also ones close to a source of heat (transistor heat sinks) are of most concern. You may want to have them checked ,it's an easy check in circuit test with an ESR meter that any qualified technician can do. And if some were drying out you will really hear a difference with new ones installed. I should note that generally speaking capacitors are inexpensive , unless it is of an odd value or multiple values in one can but they are usually in tube equipment.

@@doctormac123 That's not always true when it comes to capacitors as the sound degradation is gradual and when it really becomes noticeable transistors and IC's tend to fail from too much AC (ripple) on the DC supplies. As an electronics engineer I've seen it happen many times .So instead of a few dollars or euros for a few caps you are now talking a LOT of money for a repair.

I don't know the exact specs, but I have a Luxman L-114A of about the same age and it has no problem powering my headphone collection, from the huge Sharp HP-400H to Bang & Olufsen U70s and AKG K240 Studios. I don't have any 600 ohm headphones, but if anything can drive them well, I'd say a Luxman could.
My same-era Sony TA-F55 runs most of my headphones easily, but it does struggle a bit with the Sharps. In fact, the only unit of that period in my collection that's picky about headphones is the Trio (Kenwood) KR-80 receiver.
On the whole, amps of the late 70s had to handle headphones ranging from 8-600 ohms; in the 80s headphones began to fall within the easier-to-drive range of 16-150 ohms.

I appreciate this very much but viewers must realize this is older unit and will need capacitor replacement and other work. I resesently saw one of these that needed work and was at least $600 non functioning. So plan on another $1000 Or under for repair. Another old classic luxman younshpuld do a review on is the l-550. I think this one is class a. This one will proboby need service as it's old at some poi t as well and it won't be cheap. But with a fully restored version of either of these your going to best most of what is out there for the price today. Have you load at or consider a used accuphase 202 integrated or the accuphase 300 power amp? Those are excellent units as well that once restored offer best sound for the money. I don't see them going down in value either!
When I released the video they were still available for 300/400€ after the video...nope. The one I presented was still working fine with all its original components, in any case I agree and in most video I do tell my audience that vintage gear always needs service or at least a checkup. The Accuphase is actually next on my try list!

No need to have specific models. Follow what you like, possibly listen and then choose. The L10 is a very good amp and it will drive most stuff out there. I can only say that speakers are tye most important component and they are going to stay with you quite a long time. Invest as much as you can and overall more than the rest of your system.

Unfortunately I do not know but the 116 comes right after the L10 and the specs are similar. I think you should stick with your 116 or at least try to audition a L10 before going ahead, the sound signature is probably very similar.

Look at the Nagaoka mms carts. Being new has advantages and they sound great.

Not Sure where you got the " amplifier only " from! with all the input selectors on the front its a Intergraded amplifier. As a amp only it would also need a pre-amp to run your sauce.

Ever tried an Holfi? Just saying..........The cheapest no nonsence 35 watts weigh 12 kg. Can easely play down to 3 ohm speakers. Their top model are an reference class amp.
The Electrolytic capacitors inside of that integrated is also 40 years old.. You would be surprised of the subjective improvements of a recap job.. The Phono section of that unit is very good.

I wouldn't be surprised because I am constantly buying and recapping tape decks, reel to reel recorders, walkmans etc.

If you get the chance you should checkout Luxmans 50th aniversery lineup from 1975, l-100 integrated c1000 pre and m-2000/4000/6000 poweramps. they went all out in a statement with these, and to my subjective ears never really got any better than these - they even look fantastic ;-) nice video thx

Have you compared Accuphase and Luxman side by side?

Update Update It has arrived and I instantly took it apart for inspection and switch clean and to check for bulging caps etc, I still can't play it as I purchased a Japanese model and Im waiting for the voltage converter to arrive.
Did you try this as a pre amplifier to be able to use with a newer amplifier, please try it??? I need to know if its still good..
I haven't but I think the strong point here is the power section....two dedicated large toroidal transformers in dual mono asset...hot stuff! Yes, not extremely powerful though.

I was asking because I have tried the marants sp 7200, the phono stage is the best I have ever tried, but using the pre out to plug to my new Hegel H390, the quality was poor. I won’t use the power on this amp, the idea is to use the phono preamp from the vintage to a newer amp.

I did not state that they are true. I said I believe what Luxman is reporting. In fact, instead of writing the mere specs they inserted at the end of the L-10 manual several measurements and I trust them.

Stay with a2000, trust me. There is no better amp, maybe my Luxman L-560 but listening is crucial.
Lol, current pricetag was good til all these people saw it. J/K. I'm using a 1977 Technics SA-700 (sounds great) to power my stuff, I really need to look for something great to power these speakers. The SA-700 while it does sound amazing, as with any vintage late 70s Technics, has a noisy volume pot that eats Deoxit for breakfast. I need something that sounds this great, that has working knobs and this might be a very good fit.

Only 55w per channel? It will def be in trouble running my B&W 707 S2 speakers.
Currently using a... yes receiver from Denon dra-800h and a quad 606 as poweramp for the speakers, runs quite smoothly, allthough i could exchange the denon for something else but hey i like it.
Quad 606:
140W in 8 ohm per channel
240W in 4 ohm per channel
Denon:
100w per channel 8 ohm
What i at first didint expected ianthat this denon has an extremely smooth and nice phono amp build-in
Hi wattage isn't required as much you would think in order to get good results. It is more a myth than reality. They would definitely drive your B&W with ease. They drove my 750 watts Triton Reference as a charm. Yes, your B&Ws are not very sensitive but 55W is pretty good.
55 watts back in the 70/80s were true power figures, this would have no problem running your speakers..

Dual made great products IMO, so yes! It lacks a wide frequency response but it's a good starting point. Same fornthe speakers. I think for that budget you could find a great vintage amp. You should double that to find something new comparable. Try looking for a Luxman, a Nad, a Pioneer, a Marantz or a Sansui etc. Can't go wrong!
