  • Here is a very nice bootleg from March 13th, 1972, we get to see 4 very motivated musicians perform a new concept piece that they are still putting together.
It's very interesting to see which parts differ from the finished product, and of course from the live shows that became much more commercialized thanks to this album.
This is my longest video yet, I was originally planning to split these all into separate songs, but felt that took away from the experience.
Anywho, I do not own or take credit for the music or software used, this is strictly for listening enjoyment.
    0:08 - Speak To Me
    1:37 - Breathe
    4:34 - Travel Sequence
    10:46 - Time
    18:08 - The Mortality Sequence
    22:32 - Money
    30:02 - Us & Them
37:21 - Any Colour You Like
    42:00 - Brain Damage
    44:33 - Eclipse

RAW, unfiltered and LIVE a year BEFORE the album came out. I CAN'T imagine how people in the audience felt to hear and see an experimental series of songs THEN getting the album later. This JUST DOESN'T happen anymore! I wish I could've been there.

That version of Us And Them is so stunning...it bounces and grooves in a totally different way. And different backing vocal ideas that weren't carried over to the studio version. Dark Side is obviously very special and Us And Them is...life affirming.

I feel like they knew, during some of the interviews from Live in Pompeii where they show some behind the scenes footage of them putting together Dark Side in the studio, they had an air of confidence that this would be a big one.
Just my acid fueled opinion though lol.

I was at the first concert of the U.S. tour one month later in April of 1972 in Tampa,Fl and everyone there minds were blown because it was material no one had ever heard before and a year before album was recorded and then released. They played that and then played the tunes people knew ,like Echoes,Careful With That Axe,Eugene, etc. Not to mention many people there were tripping the balls off because there was lots of acid around.

Nice to hear the album without the overproduction and with some of their early experimentation intact. I don't know what it is exactly, but I just can't seem to get into the studio album all that much anymore. It's too fixed for my taste, if that makes sense. Pink Floyd is just a band I normally associate with improvisation.
"Dark Side" blew my mind when I first heard it a decade ago as a teen, but it just doesn't stimulate my mind much anymore compared to the earlier works. It's great to hear them perform it live still before their audiences changed, which in the process changed the band. They became less freewheeling, and more like the machine they ranted against. Other bands around the time became extremely famous, but still maintained their sense of experimentation.
Anyway, this is before all that, and it's great, so thanks for sharing.

    • @CoşanGülaçar
      @CoşanGülaçar 6 років тому +3

Cool. You can't improvise when producing records. It's hard to know what to keep in, and because of that they've done a great job. The imrov is for live man. The "over production" by which you mean effects in
Guessing? It just makes it 10 times more trippy. It probably wasn't their decision to cut everything by half and take off solos, that's the production side of thins.

floyd were so way ahead technologicly and were streching what that equipment was capable of doin and alot of times pushing gear way beyond what its intended uses were. Floyd thought there was music in life in itself and that everything can emit an emotion from those sounds. Story telling at its most primal..They made Order out of Chaos. The experimented but are masters of that and the story... greatful dead were huge at improvisation...but pf masterd it. Where they excelled musicly is the diffence

    Random thoughts:
    - While I don't prefer Travel Sequence to On the Run, I agree with Kurtyboi below that some sort of fusion over the two would have been an improvement. Electronic loops that would have amazed the listener in and of themselves in 1973 don't do so today.
    - Thank God they lifted the verse lead vocal an octave on Time. They sound bored here.
    - The Mortality Sequence sounds like *very* early Floyd. Would have been right at home on Saucerful of Secrets. No doubt that was why they weren't satisfied with it.
    - The run home (Any Colour You Like onwards), where so much of the album's greatness lies, got a *lot* sharper between this performance and the recording.
