I didn’t have my period for about five months around my junior year of high school due to an ED. I got it back as a surprise in school and so heavy. I got out of chem class and went to see my favorite English teacher(a male) and cried. He had teenage daughters so I knew he had tampons in his desk for students. he also was friends with the theater and took me there to find a pair of pants I can change into. I didn’t have loving parents and my teachers were THERE for me when I really needed serious support, or something as simple as a tampon lol
That really sucks, my school used to fill pad dispensers for students and unfortunately people were wasting them and sticking them on the walls, so they stopped filling them completely. It really sucks that a few people being immature ruined it for the people who really needed them.

Absolute animal behavior. And these kids know better. The lack of discipline at home shows when kids are on their own.
This is really kind and beyond the call of duty. I went to a woman's college that has been est since the early 1900s. Every few semesters there is some type of petition for free tampons/pads in the bathroom. The Uni never does it. The school is worth over 85 million. Your students lack complete awareness of what a rare teachers heart they encountered. They will slowly learn in the next decade or so.
This is why working in a school setting gets exhausting. No matter what act of selflessness or kindness staff execute, it usually always gets taken for granted or is somehow an expectation from students.

I had a science teacher in 7th grade and he told the class, but specifically the ladies, if we ever needed to use the bathroom, to just go and take as long as we need (basically saying what you’re thinking without making it weird). He probably doesn’t even remember doing it but it stuck with me that a man could be so understanding and supportive. He was a good man and an excellent teacher. He was a pretty old guy but he made learning so fun and he was good at it too. I always looked forward to his class and knowing he was understanding that girls were going to be going through early puberty around that time just made everything so much less stressful.
My school always charged for them 😅 the one time back in high school during my teen years that I didn’t realize I had started my period during school and wasn’t prepared, I was scolded for not having money for a pad at the nurse’s office. And she laughed at me for not being comfortable using tampons. She said oh well they’re only 50 cents if you use a tampon instead otherwise I’ll have to charge you 🤬
She had no business being a nurse with that attitude. Someone who truly understands would know that not everyone has extra money for the outrageous costs of feminine products, not everyone has a predictable cycle and even something as simple as stress can throw it off (did she not take biology in school?) and not everyone is comfortable with using tampons due to the risk of TSS. To shame you like that makes nurses look sooo bad because their job is to HELP.
@@nataliekubus1041 It's just not comfortable for some people at all. If my flow isn't heavy enough, it really hurts to remove them. People who tense up their vaginal muscles can feel a lot of pain trying to put them in. Since tensing is subconsciously they have to train themselves to relax and it can take a long time to learn. Kids shouldn't be forced to suffer pain because they can't afford a pad.

My high school had an entire room filled with “take what you need” stuff. It had clothes, school supplies, products (not just period ones, but I believe they also had little things of bathroom products), etc. Only ever had to use it a few times when my schedule was a bit off track and snuck up on me, but it was a lifesaver at times. The janitors were all really nice too, so if it was closed, you could ask them to open the door anytime and they would. They would have to close it back up afterwards, but they didn’t mind. Lots of people (mostly teachers) ended up donating any extra supplies and my school would go crazy when the canned food drive came around. I remember bringing in multiple bags of canned foods at one point for one drive and was shocked when we didn’t win since my middle school never really cared about it so it was easy to win.
I got my period around 10-11 years old, which isn’t uncommon, but my school was small and between year 5 & 6 there were maybe 11 girls put together. I was the first one to get their period. As a 11 year old I would forget to repack my period bag, that a teacher gave me plus the three other girls in my grade/class the year before, and would go to the office to ask for a spare pad. I got yelled at and told to pack them more often because the school couldn’t be bothered stocking them. I was in year 5 and the rest had gotten there’s around the end of year 6 ! I was so pissed. I don't get why bathrooms for fifth graders don't have the little disposals in the stalls. when I got my period in fifth grade, I had to wait until everyone left the bathroom for me to run to dispose of my used pad in the trashcan for paper towels
@@leaveittolefty my sister was also 8, and she was a skinny little girl, not developed at all. I was 10 but I was a bit more chubby, so it made more sense. We were the youngest to ever get it in my family. Before us, the youngest to get it was at 12 yrs old.

(No matter what i do, i haven't shed much weight in years...)It's also often genetic. It's treatable, but only diagnosable with a blood draw. Assuming she's between the range of 8-14 now, if periods suddenly slow dramatically or stop, please get her tested for PCOS. if this isn't relevant information by this point due to age or confirmed/debunked diagnosis, ignore me.
This is why the dispensers they used to have in ladies' rooms (including in schools) would charge a nominal fee -- like a quarter in the '90s -- for a pad or tampon. It was cheap enough that anyone who needed one could get one, but it was a small "barrier to entry" for those who would otherwise misuse them.
I would’ve loved to have had a teacher like you when I was in school instead of getting yelled at because I was “gone too long” then had to explain well I’m bleeding out down below and have to change myself & make sure I’m clean. Some of the teachers in my school were super cruel. The ones I loved I would just slide them a note and then they would just be like go ahead take as much time as you need or would offer tampons or pads. You’re amazing!
Honestly there is this really mean judge-mental coach that's in the nurses office all the time I'm not gonna say her name But she's like really rude. So I would definitely make sure to go in the middle of the day if Need one. 😅

I mean they might be but most schools are very large. My public high school was one of the smaller ones but it still took ages to get to the nurses office! And they expected a pass. So I’d have had to go back to my classroom, interrupt class, probably lie and say I feel sick because everyone would be watching at that point, get my passbook signed, go allllll the way down to the corner the nurses office was in, show the pass, explain the situation (with so many people watching. We had like 3 women at the desk handling “out sick” phone calls, the nurse, and at least 2 students in there sick at all times), get the product, use it, get ANOTHER pass signed, get up to my class again and hope I’m not stopped by a dean or teacher who would then require to see the pass and probably ask why I needed the nurse. If all went smoothly probably 15 min to get a damn pad. Minimum. So I’m penalized 15+ min because they can’t stock a machine? And god forbid it was during a test or important lesson. I’m an adult now and don’t care if I have to ask for a pad from whoever but as a teen I sure cared!
Our school had the same issue. The Student Support people had set up a little table with period products and they were just thrown everywhere. There were pads stuck to the ceiling, mirrors, stalls, stuffed (and I mean stuffed this wasn’t from normal use) in those sanitary cans and shoved down the toilets to clog them. I had only ever seen this stuff with the boys bathrooms but some girls went wild with the kindness from the student support. Some girl even brought in black spray paint and sprayed over the tampons on walls and stuff and over the “please flush” signs. So gross
We complain about not being able to access period products in the bathrooms but it’s these same people who ruin it for the people who actually need it. It’s so annoying knowing that some girls are immature like this and take advantage. This same thing happens in my school too, the pads or tampons in the sinks or on mirrors. Absolutely wasted. One girl, when I was in the bathroom, was clearly high and had tampons on her fingers and asked me if I liked her “nails” (the tampons) ngl it was chuckle worthy in the moment and looking back at it but that’s the same crap that takes it all away for the responsible girls who don’t abuse the period products handed to us.
They can stay back after class to do it, like how I'm assuming some of the cis girls would because they might be embarrassed to get them in front of others too.
Like few weeks ago our homeroom teacher told us to not stick pads onto walls, what I mean is he told us that someone was doing that and if it's us we should stop (i don't even go to the toilet at school it's dirty) and we were like wtf who does that huh😭 like why? They used to do this in my high school , it was so annoying when I randomly got my period and really needed a pad. I’d have to go to the nurses office to get some.
The only problem with this is that sometimes you don't realize your period has started and that you need a pad until you are already in the bathroom and you check your underwear or wipe. Not every period, everytime, for every girl comes with vengeances with doubling over cramps and looking like a triple homicide. Sometimes, some months it just sneaks up on you early, without warning. So if there aren't any back up products in the bathrooms then that girl is going to have to fold up the thin ass tissue like toilet paper in her underwear and walk all the way to where ever your classroom is grab a pad and then make a second trip back down to the bathroom. That's a whole lot of missed class time. Of coarse this isn't your problem or fault, because you are paying for and providing these products with your own money (which is so amazing and kind!!) so they can be given out and stored where you want, but the school should absolutely provide backup product to be left in the bathroom even if they are in a 25 cent machine. It's so much easier to carry a quarter on you in your pocket than a whole purse filled with supplies every single day for two weeks prior to when you think your period is going to start because it might come early. Anyways with that said once you are on your cycle, you should be bringing your own supplies everyday. However this has become difficult because some schools (my daughter's included) have tried to ban purses (they eventually decided against it thank goodness) and they had already reduced the times they can go to their lockers, only first thing in the morning and then at the end of the day. They stopped filling the pad and tampon machine and moved the pads to the nurse office. Had they followed through with the purse ban how in the world would girls be able to bring in their own supplies!
Girls would have to wear pants with pockets. Or simply remove the products from their backpack and not be embarrassed by doing it. Keeping a period secret is a taboo thing. Perceived as weakness instead of a biological requirement. Personally, I plan to keep my daughter home on her “heavy day.” Because the stress on her is not worth it. They don’t issue lockers to anyone at the middle school anymore. They are all zip tied and not in use.

I would sometimes have to walk around embarrassed and worried someone would notice the stains on my jeans. I remember using so much toilet paper because I felt bad asking my mom purchase these items when I knew she struggled financially.

I had to start putting some at my work's toilet. The fact we get free toilet paper, plasters, or to use a microwave - but sanitary pads are were they draw the line... awful

You should give some to the nurse too.. I was never regular and even had a moment in middle school where my liners flew out of my coat pocket at lunchtime. If I needed them I would stare at them until the bell and be to nervous to grab some.
OK, I’m older than you and I used to spend a lot of money on the kids too. They taught me not to over the years, much like you learned. I would suggest keeping some extras so you can help out a kid if they ask you but not just leave them freely available. Period products add up, especially if you are supplying multiple classes worth of girls throughout the day. Your money is for you at the end of the day, and helping out in emergencies is nice of you. The school nurse is usually supplied with products for emergencies too.

You could also teach them about menstrual cups. They are reusable (they don't end up in landfield or the ocean), you only need to empty them every 12 hours (so there's no need to change them while at school), there is no risk of shock syndrome, there is no odour, they can't be shared (you carry yours in a little cotton bag and use when you need it), you can't stick them to a mirror, if you choose the right one you'll only need to buy one every 10 years and, personally, I find them way more comfortable than both pads and tampons.
Wow! That is so nice! No one has ever given me free period products unless you count my husband. It’s really a struggle to remember to keep them on hand all the time. Because when you need them, you need them. Your students are so lucky!
As a German, this baffles me. I wonder if this courtesy of the teacher, and dispensers etc is needed because parents have made it Impossible for kids zo come to them about it? Here it is normal to talk to your mother or even your father about it (even if gather might feel a little more weird). And in case of oopsie it is normal to ask friends to help out. (Maybe that feels icky to Americans?) We never had the need for such courtesies from teachers in our school. I'm here to learn, what do you think how it occurs that it is needed?
If she wants to move the supplies SHE PAID FOR from one location to another because kids are wasting it, more power to her. I’m so sick of people making excuses for poor behavior. Same at my school. The reason was because kids were taking all the tampons and pads out and using them to purposely clog toilets, leaving them in wet heaps in the sinks, or plastering the walls and stalls with them.

My only question on this is… If your having to refill these drawers often does that mean the kids aren’t being responsible and ever packing their feminine products because they expect you to carry it for them? Womens bathrooms should also be significantly bigger than men’s because we use it longer and more often. Womens restroom lines aren’t necessary, but the mens restroom takes up too much space. People in collective are disrespectful, not just young adults. That behavior is learned. I like that you kept the products available to those that need them. i feel bad for american schools , in my school at lease every bathroom has a basket with products in it and it’s from the government so non of the teachers have to supply for them 😅 i’m glad that you do this though it’s such a kind gesture for your students

Used to work at an education place for 16+. We used to try to do the same as a lot of them came from underprivileged homes. So we tried to be nice by putting period products in the bathroom. We’d fill it up with a whole box of tampons and sanitary towels and an hour later it would be empty. We had to move it out the the reception which is awful because people had to come and ask but we were annoyed at keep being taken advantage of.

If you still want to give to kids outside of your class but want to avoid misuse, you could leave a note like "Need period products? Ask for the red box in classroom XYZ" - So kids can ask even if they are to embarrassed to directly ask, and especially the boys/non-period-havers will be none the wiser!

This is really kind and beyond the call of duty. I went to a woman's college that has been est since the early 1900s. Every few semesters there is some type of petition for free tampons/pads in the bathroom. The Uni never does it. The school is worth over 85 million. Your students lack complete awareness of what a rare teachers heart they encountered. They will slowly learn in the next decade or so.

I had a science teacher in 7th grade and he told the class, but specifically the ladies, if we ever needed to use the bathroom, to just go and take as long as we need (basically saying what you’re thinking without making it weird). He probably doesn’t even remember doing it but it stuck with me that a man could be so understanding and supportive. He was a good man and an excellent teacher. He was a pretty old guy but he made learning so fun and he was good at it too. I always looked forward to his class and knowing he was understanding that girls were going to be going through early puberty around that time just made everything so much less stressful.
My school always charged for them 😅 the one time back in high school during my teen years that I didn’t realize I had started my period during school and wasn’t prepared, I was scolded for not having money for a pad at the nurse’s office. And she laughed at me for not being comfortable using tampons. She said oh well they’re only 50 cents if you use a tampon instead otherwise I’ll have to charge you 🤬

Someone who truly understands would know that not everyone has extra money for the outrageous costs of feminine products, not everyone has a predictable cycle and even something as simple as stress can throw it off (did she not take biology in school?) and not everyone is comfortable with using tampons due to the risk of TSS. @@nataliekubus1041 It's just not comfortable for some people at all. If my flow isn't heavy enough, it really hurts to remove them. People who tense up their vaginal muscles can feel a lot of pain trying to put them in. Since tensing is subconsciously they have to train themselves to relax and it can take a long time to learn. Kids shouldn't be forced to suffer pain because they can't afford a pad.
@@FrogsForBreakfast I agree. It took me a awhile to get the hang of them and feel comfortable as well. Also, studies have shown that using tampons can even make cramps worse. It's a personal choice and no one should be shamed for it.
My high school had an entire room filled with “take what you need” stuff. It had clothes, school supplies, products (not just period ones, but I believe they also had little things of bathroom products), etc. Only ever had to use it a few times when my schedule was a bit off track and snuck up on me, but it was a lifesaver at times. The janitors were all really nice too, so if it was closed, you could ask them to open the door anytime and they would. They would have to close it back up afterwards, but they didn’t mind. Lots of people (mostly teachers) ended up donating any extra supplies and my school would go crazy when the canned food drive came around. I remember bringing in multiple bags of canned foods at one point for one drive and was shocked when we didn’t win since my middle school never really cared about it so it was easy to win.
I got my period around 10-11 years old, which isn’t uncommon, but my school was small and between year 5 & 6 there were maybe 11 girls put together. I was the first one to get their period. As a 11 year old I would forget to repack my period bag, that a teacher gave me plus the three other girls in my grade/class the year before, and would go to the office to ask for a spare pad. I got yelled at and told to pack them more often because the school couldn’t be bothered stocking them. I was in year 5 and the rest had gotten there’s around the end of year 6 ! I was so pissed. my grand got hers at age 8. she had only eaten clean, organic food so not “hormones in the food supply.” it was shocking
I don't get why bathrooms for fifth graders don't have the little disposals in the stalls. when I got my period in fifth grade, I had to wait until everyone left the bathroom for me to run to dispose of my used pad in the trashcan for paper towels
@@leaveittolefty my sister was also 8, and she was a skinny little girl, not developed at all. I was 10 but I was a bit more chubby, so it made more sense. We were the youngest to ever get it in my family. Before us, the youngest to get it was at 12 yrs old.

(No matter what i do, i haven't shed much weight in years...)It's also often genetic. It's treatable, but only diagnosable with a blood draw. Assuming she's between the range of 8-14 now, if periods suddenly slow dramatically or stop, please get her tested for PCOS. if this isn't relevant information by this point due to age or confirmed/debunked diagnosis, ignore me.

This is why the dispensers they used to have in ladies' rooms (including in schools) would charge a nominal fee -- like a quarter in the '90s -- for a pad or tampon. It was cheap enough that anyone who needed one could get one, but it was a small "barrier to entry" for those who would otherwise misuse them.
I would’ve loved to have had a teacher like you when I was in school instead of getting yelled at because I was “gone too long” then had to explain well I’m bleeding out down below and have to change myself & make sure I’m clean. Some of the teachers in my school were super cruel. The ones I loved I would just slide them a note and then they would just be like go ahead take as much time as you need or would offer tampons or pads. You’re amazing!

I mean they might be but most schools are very large. My public high school was one of the smaller ones but it still took ages to get to the nurses office! And they expected a pass. So I’d have had to go back to my classroom, interrupt class, probably lie and say I feel sick because everyone would be watching at that point, get my passbook signed, go allllll the way down to the corner the nurses office was in, show the pass, explain the situation (with so many people watching. We had like 3 women at the desk handling “out sick” phone calls, the nurse, and at least 2 students in there sick at all times), get the product, use it, get ANOTHER pass signed, get up to my class again and hope I’m not stopped by a dean or teacher who would then require to see the pass and probably ask why I needed the nurse. If all went smoothly probably 15 min to get a damn pad. Minimum. So I’m penalized 15+ min because they can’t stock a machine? And god forbid it was during a test or important lesson. I’m an adult now and don’t care if I have to ask for a pad from whoever but as a teen I sure cared!
Our school had the same issue. The Student Support people had set up a little table with period products and they were just thrown everywhere. There were pads stuck to the ceiling, mirrors, stalls, stuffed (and I mean stuffed this wasn’t from normal use) in those sanitary cans and shoved down the toilets to clog them. I had only ever seen this stuff with the boys bathrooms but some girls went wild with the kindness from the student support. Some girl even brought in black spray paint and sprayed over the tampons on walls and stuff and over the “please flush” signs. So gross

We complain about not being able to access period products in the bathrooms but it’s these same people who ruin it for the people who actually need it. It’s so annoying knowing that some girls are immature like this and take advantage. This same thing happens in my school too, the pads or tampons in the sinks or on mirrors. Absolutely wasted.
One girl, when I was in the bathroom, was clearly high and had tampons on her fingers and asked me if I liked her “nails” (the tampons) ngl it was chuckle worthy in the moment and looking back at it but that’s the same crap that takes it all away for the responsible girls who don’t abuse the period products handed to us.
I think its so sweet that u have extra period products for them, its easy to forget to bring some in the morning, so im glad u got their back

They used to do this in my high school , it was so annoying when I randomly got my period and really needed a pad. I’d have to go to the nurses office to get some.
The only problem with this is that sometimes you don't realize your period has started and that you need a pad until you are already in the bathroom and you check your underwear or wipe. Not every period, everytime, for every girl comes with vengeances with doubling over cramps and looking like a triple homicide. Sometimes, some months it just sneaks up on you early, without warning. So if there aren't any back up products in the bathrooms then that girl is going to have to fold up the thin ass tissue like toilet paper in her underwear and walk all the way to where ever your classroom is grab a pad and then make a second trip back down to the bathroom. That's a whole lot of missed class time.
Of coarse this isn't your problem or fault, because you are paying for and providing these products with your own money (which is so amazing and kind!!) so they can be given out and stored where you want, but the school should absolutely provide backup product to be left in the bathroom even if they are in a 25 cent machine. It's so much easier to carry a quarter on you in your pocket than a whole purse filled with supplies every single day for two weeks prior to when you think your period is going to start because it might come early.
Anyways with that said once you are on your cycle, you should be bringing your own supplies everyday. However this has become difficult because some schools (my daughter's included) have tried to ban purses (they eventually decided against it thank goodness) and they had already reduced the times they can go to their lockers, only first thing in the morning and then at the end of the day. They stopped filling the pad and tampon machine and moved the pads to the nurse office. Had they followed through with the purse ban how in the world would girls be able to bring in their own supplies!
Girls would have to wear pants with pockets. Or simply remove the products from their backpack and not be embarrassed by doing it.
Keeping a period secret is a taboo thing. Perceived as weakness instead of a biological requirement.
Personally, I plan to keep my daughter home on her “heavy day.” Because the stress on her is not worth it. They don’t issue lockers to anyone at the middle school anymore. They are all zip tied and not in use.

I would sometimes have to walk around embarrassed and worried someone would notice the stains on my jeans. OK, I’m older than you and I used to spend a lot of money on the kids too. They taught me not to over the years, much like you learned. I would suggest keeping some extras so you can help out a kid if they ask you but not just leave them freely available. Period products add up, especially if you are supplying multiple classes worth of girls throughout the day. Your money is for you at the end of the day, and helping out in emergencies is nice of you. The school nurse is usually supplied with products for emergencies too.
just goes to show how immature teens can be obviously. they think it’s hilarious but it’s so wasteful and feminine products are already over charged. you’re so kind to still offer💟 you make a difference.
You could also teach them about menstrual cups. They are reusable (they don't end up in landfield or the ocean), you only need to empty them every 12 hours (so there's no need to change them while at school), there is no risk of shock syndrome, there is no odour, they can't be shared (you carry yours in a little cotton bag and use when you need it), you can't stick them to a mirror, if you choose the right one you'll only need to buy one every 10 years and, personally, I find them way more comfortable than both pads and tampons.
Not everyone can use those though.

As a German, this baffles me. I wonder if this courtesy of the teacher, and dispensers etc is needed because parents have made it Impossible for kids zo come to them about it? Here it is normal to talk to your mother or even your father about it (even if gather might feel a little more weird). And in case of oopsie it is normal to ask friends to help out. (Maybe that feels icky to Americans?) We never had the need for such courtesies from teachers in our school.

I like how boys are provided everything they need in the bathroom, but girls aren’t. Girls all over the world miss school every month because they can’t afford period products. Period product access is essential for educational equality.
what are boys provided in the bathroom? Consider donating to a non profit that supplies period products (that is , if you are not already doing so). Making reusable pads would be a good service project to do over the summer!

Womens bathrooms should also be significantly bigger than men’s because we use it longer and more often. Womens restroom lines aren’t necessary, but the mens restroom takes up too much space. If they changed the sizes, each bathroom would have a similar short line. Bathroom inequality bro.

People in collective are disrespectful, not just young adults. That behavior is learned. I like that you kept the products available to those that need them. Having an open door and an open dialogue with students about things like hygiene can make a significant difference their life. Thanks for being a real role model.

The parents of those kids have really failed them. Their lack of discipline is going to haunt them later and hurt them and those around them, and it already is. Parents need to step up and be real parents again.

Used to work at an education place for 16+. We used to try to do the same as a lot of them came from underprivileged homes. So we tried to be nice by putting period products in the bathroom. We’d fill it up with a whole box of tampons and sanitary towels and an hour later it would be empty. We had to move it out the the reception which is awful because people had to come and ask but we were annoyed at keep being taken advantage of.

If you still want to give to kids outside of your class but want to avoid misuse, you could leave a note like "Need period products? Ask for the red box in classroom XYZ" - So kids can ask even if they are to embarrassed to directly ask, and especially the boys/non-period-havers will be none the wiser!
