Hi, my mechanism has no screw but the plastic part will not pinch together, there is a visible spring inside. Any ideas please?

Hello Freddie - you need to engage that spring again and ensure that it locks onto the outer casing.

None of mine do! Rotating part has a bayonet fitting very difficult to remove! I found a small socket just slides over the tongues allowing it to be pushed through.
