@@dora1980 I was a Psycho fanatic. I wrote him twice to Universal Studios and he replied both times. He sent me an autographed 8x10 the first time. I’m still impressed by the man.
I have a notion to second that emotion ! He indeed was quite intelligent & articulate. And he seemed like such a sweet down to earth fellow. Left us much too soon.... :-(
I met Perkins several times at the location where much of the movie was filmed (Budapest) in May - June 1988. A very private, easy going, shy person with a great charisma!
I bumped into Tony Perkins as he was leaving a gym on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City about a year after this. By the expression on his face I could tell he was preoccupied with health issues.
Aww. That's sad, right? I just saw Psycho (again) and am so fascinated by Anthony Perkins. It must have been incredibly scary for him to have an AIDS diagnosis in the 80's. Thanks for sharing your story. :)
+ Noe Berengena "I bumped into Tony Perkins as he was leaving a gym on Ventura Boulevard in Studio City about a year after this. By the expression on his face I could tell he was preoccupied with health issues." How can you look at someone's face and tell they are preoccupied with health issues?? What an odd thing to say. Just odd.
Lana 2017 well have you ever seen a sick person? i’ve heard of another account from someone who saw anthony and they said his face look gaunt and he was so thin. healthy people don’t just look like that.
That wasn't bad. Didn't look awkward at all. Only thing that was off was he didn't know about Psycho IV thinking it was 5. It came off like he was exaggerating at first until he repeated himself again. If you think that's awkward you should look at VladTV and his ignorant interviews. Poor journalist forever.
Easy for us to pick that out and see his mistakes, but you got to remember the intense prep Arsenio had to do each episode. Arsenio had to read different books and watch movies nightly just to prepare for the guests on that nights show. On top of that he had to prepare the shows monologue, work with the writer, director, etc. No easy task by any means so keeping that in mind, you’re more apt to understand why he missed a detail or two.
Some people might think he was a bit pretentious the way he speaks about acting but, really, he just seems sincere, humble, showing a great amount of love and respect of his profession (which perhaps wasn’t very kind to him) and a genuinely nice man. Frank Langella speaks beautifully of him. Born in the 90s, I just wonder where I’m supposed to look amongst the film stars of my generation to find genuine modesty in an actor equal to Mr Perkin’s talent. Not anyone sitting on James Cordon’s sofa, I know that much. The people of my generation come over far too often as an incredibly selfish bunch.
Yes, he was gay, but married & had kids. He got AIDS, wife was lucky she did not get infected, but was very annoyed by his secrecy! It could have turned bad for her & their kids.
I must say that I find the late Anthony Perkins to be a rather gentle soul of a very talented man. I still miss him and I was very surprised that Arsenio Hall was a little unprepared for this interview with Mr. Perkins. But it turned out pretty well, I guess.
He was so adorable... he had an awkward grace about him, very endearing. My heart breaks knowing he led a double life throughout his earlier years....and according to some, even after he was married. - What a horrible way to leave this Earth.... I hope he is at peace.
Mya Hollandia You can say that again. Tony Perkins’ wife became a widow. Less than nine years later, she became a victim of one of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Her two sons became orphans. Therefore, people should refrain from speculating about what her late husband did when she was not in the same room. May they both rest in peace.
he didn't live a double life that's speculation I assumed that his wife knew about his bisexuality so why don't you not assume that she didn't know he probably was very upfront with her about his past relationships with men and yes may they both rest in peace and the way he talks about his wife and his sons is beautiful that he obviously felt so blessed to have them in his life
The Quality of the video 😂 and the effects in the movie 😂 we’ve come a long way .. RIP Anthony.. easily one of my favorite characters of all time “ We all go a little mad sometimes 😁 haven’t you ? “ - Norman Bates ❤️
I have to play Devil’s Advocate, because I actually throughly adore “Edge of Sanity” it’s acquired taste and I was marveled by the campy cinematography, and it was aesthetically compelling in it’s atmosphere. It’s in my top 25 favorite of Perkins 67 title filmography.
fascinating fact- he auditioned for the phantom's part at the same time Michael Crawford did. I read it in the book the MCIFA sent me when I was a part of it. (Michael Crawford International Fan Association)
He played Norman Bates amazingly. I think only Freddie Highmore is capable of playing him today. Bates Motel was an amazing show. I think Anthony would be proud ♥️
With respect mate there is no real way you could say that and expect anyone to take you seriously. If Andrew Garfield had been cast in Bated Motel and someone mentioned an unknown Freddie Highmore as a possible contender you would probably be the loudest to shout objections! You cannot say there is no other actor on this Earth that could portray Norman as you have not watched them all.
I actually don't think Perkins would have liked someone else playing Norman. He was totally set on not doing Psycho II until he found out the studio was thinking of replacing him with Christopher Walken. Then he jumped up and played Bates for another three movies. He was understandably possessive over such an iconic role.
Anthony Perkins, even before my time, I found found him very handsome. First movie I watch was Psycho, but would like to see other movies he was in as well.
Arsenio is very polite and respectful here, but he should have been better informed. "I can't see you in a comedy," he tells Tony....but Tony, as he says, started in acting by doing comedic roles...for example, his first role was in the light comedy "The Actress," and then he starred in "The Matchmaker," which was absolutely a romantic comedy. I just wish Arsenio had the correct information before doing the interview...it's just an example of the ridiculous typecasting that followed Tony since "Psycho." He had a successful career before that movie...he starred in westerns, as a romantic leading man, etc.
He was clearly devoted to his two sons. And to his wife too, he definitely loved her even if not heterosexually. I wonder if he ever did feel true happiness in his life.
Isaw one film he did back in 62 in Greece. Phaedra. That was great. I saw it on line. He gets boil down to the Hitchcock Film. He was more than that. A well seasoned Actor or Thespian . He also sings .
He should have done more research about his guest before his interview, but at least he lets him talk at length without interruption. So not the worst interviewer in that sense.
He was the worst interviewer, and yet, he ALWAYS had the best guests. Look up Keenan Wayans spoofing him on In Living Color. It's shockingly accurate! He would ask some of the most asinine questions ("There's one thing everybody wants to know...what kind of music you like to get busy to?")
That was AH at his best, and worst. He was very good with actors , but not with intellectual genius such as Anthony . No slam on Arsenio, it was a sign of the times and of things to come. The shows of today are unwatchable and don’t draw a audience !
The interviewer is real rude , as the way he talks to Antony isn't professional at all , talking down to him actually, making Antony panicky, his talking real anxious, handsome man though
I didn't think he was rude, nor did Anthony seem uncomfortable. He let him talk and express himself without interruption, which is something at least. However, he should have done more research about his guest beforehand.
