I'm a big fan of Anthony Perkins and I found this interview from 1958. Thought it was worth sharing :)

For a 25 year old man, he's articulate and easy going. He speaks in complete sentences. He never gets ruffled. At minute 20 he hasn't made a false step.
He was so intelligent and quick witted.
Yes he's wonderful. Yet definitely not easy going, he's visibly uncomfortable and very controlled. There's a sad reason for this, a very difficult upbringing.

I’ve read a lot about him. He has been my favorite actor since I was eleven. He was already gone when I began to watch him. His movies helped me when I was in rough places.
I understand some the darkness entwined into his personality. When I read about Perkins’ mother… let’s just say I related on some level
But I love watching his gears work when he’s on game shows and his competitiveness.

Larry Wakeman as a young man like me at the age of 21 almost 22 I can say I speak and type properly. Also I admire the older works of film and art and I’m into, Classical music unlike most of my generation.

Sad but true. After "Psycho" his career was definitely never the same. In the eyes of so many he was immediately typecast.
He was an incredible actor. Anthony Perkins did a great job in playing Norman Bates in the Psycho movies. Great Job Tony.

@@franken-pattern Yes. He has quite a few good movies after Psycho that seems to be overlooked. Perkins and Welles complimented each other. I wish Welles could’ve directed him again

Why did Mike Wallace find it appropriate to interrogate a twenty-six-year-old actor as if he was running for political office? Ridiculous! Anthony Perkins handled himself so well, and his intelligence is obvious. Tony has the graciousness that Wallace lacks. I think it's unfortunate that Tony, a talented and cultivated individual, had to endure this treatment. If Twitter had existed back then, I'm sure Wallace would have been harshly criticized for the way he conducted himself.
I completely agree. Mike sounds so condescending, it enrages me. Tony was so classy, his answers are so thought- provoking.
@@anchitaroy9126 I heartily concur. Tony comes across as much more intelligent, thoughtful & articulate than most actors. A pity that he had to put up with so many inane questions from Mike Wallace, many of which are only meant to get a sensational reply or reaction.

Reminds me of the character "Mongo" in the 1974 film "Blazing Saddles". He says about himself, "Mongo only pawn in game of life".
its interesting, i would agree with anyone any day to defend him against a media pawn, but mike wallace actually doesnt seem to be one. hes asking questions pretty straight-forewardly and although some of them just seem painful and mean, i feel like its good to get questions like that over and done with just so people can know. i do agree he should have approached them differently, though. but then tony may be less honest by feeling more obliged to say things that wouldnt seem odd rather than being almost defiantly honest.

I grew up in the 60s so I can recall a lot TV commercials for cigarettes. They didn't get outlawed by the federal gov't till 1971.
he and a young harrison ford have some of the same expressions. they both fall back to a very calm countenance.

If the unique mysterious persona of Anthony Perkins made him heir to great Hollywood actors it wasn't Gable, Brando, Stewart, or Cooper.

As I do when I take off my hat, you make a good point.
The presentation set up is so... strange, now, partly because there’s a kind of honesty going on here. And, while Perkins seems to be interrogated by Wallace, he also seems to quite understand what it’s all about. Nowadays, the ‘Chat Show’ acts as a shop-window for the equivalent of a fast-food franchise. Nevertheless, Perkins comes across as thoughtful and on-the-ball ... though there is a curious segment that starts with a question about the “Beat Generation” & ‘responsibility’ or not that leaves one wondering. And then there’s the final question, “What does..... “. Really, quite interesting. Subbing.
i really really agree with you. no one else seems to understand or notice this odd honesty. its like by simply asking the questions in a rough manner you are inadvertently forcing anthony perkins to launch into a more genuine discussion, where to keep up with whats going on, he wouldnt be able to fake an opinion in time. it is mean, but at the same time it must be refreshing for both of them in a way. anthony perkins seems like such a beautiful person.

Right up there with Brando, Sheen, and Walken as the greatest actors of all time! If Perkins had never made another movie for the res tof his life, his sensational performance as Norman Bates sealed his legacy as one of the all-time great actors. He should have been one of the biggest stars of the 1960's but then he basically disappeared from the scene after Psycho making films in Europe.

They didn't know any better. Media wasn't accesible and as laid back as it is now. The crime rate has dropped since then, but communities were insular and no one was really considered a stranger. It's the rose colored glasses, I tell you!

This man is so underrated, yet he has one of the prettiest faces I've ever seen. Also, Andrew Garfield looks like Anthony Perkins.
One of the worst interviews I have ever seen. Perkins is much too articulate and self aware for the critical sensationalistic smoking Wallace. To add, at one point Wallace asks him about what qualities stand out in him, Perkins should of said: I have great tolerance for stupid questions like the ones you are asking me!
I could not agree more. Mike Wallace is not a well rounded interviewer. Seems to enjoy putting people on the spot & constantly looking for a weak spot in his subject.

I don’t know what’s more ludicrous - Wallace pimping cigarettes for 2 minutes, or comparing Anthony Perkins to Gable and Cooper.
Truth is often stranger than fiction.
Anthony Perkins will always be THE Norman Bates, but it would have been interesting had he lived to have seen what James Dean might have done with the role. He was the right age and he had the brooding and the edginess.
Loved James Dean, saw all 3 of his movies, he was great in all of them. Don't see him in Psycho though, but then when an actor is really good in a movie, he becomes that person, and it gets hard to see anyone else in that role. I loved Montgomery Clift in "From here to Eternity", heard that Aldo Ray was considered for that role, would never have worked. Clift was Prewitt, like Perkins, he was dark, brooding and gorgeous. Had a cross on both of them in my youth, both were also bisexual.

I thought Tony was brilliant in "Fear Strikes Out". I have great admiration for his acting skills.
Unfortunately, Perkins was not to inherit the mantle of Gable or Steward or Cooper. "Psycho" was his high watermark and it was downhill after that. Virtually all his movies in the 60s were made in Europe and are pretty much forgotten.

Interviewer was weird and condescending
He suppressed a lot of painful memories and feelings at that time (complex abuse and other traumas while he was young). Combined with the longing to be honest, strange reactions like this come out I guess.
Parliament cigarettes with the recessed filter were considered the most sophisticated cigarette to smoke at the time.
He was a very talented actor . The fame came to soon in his early age . He couldn’t get rid of Psycho movies by Hitchcock.

I wish the nitwit Mike Wallace would have had this interview 10 years previously with Robert Mitchum. The answers would would have been classic.
I know he wanted Psycho to change his image and it did -- radically. But maybe it ruined his career. I can't look at him without thinking, "Norman!"
I almost think, since he was so so excellent in the early days and moving up (as they say), that as great as he was in Psycho, it may have ruined his career as it type-casted him; several famous British actors also commented and said the same.

Weinberg had taken me to see `The Two of Us` and then we went for a meal (Chinese) Perkins was waiting..tall, lithe, slithering up or down a tree in front of the theatre. Weinberg snubbed him. Why? Then over supper he was `Oh, Claude Chabrol will be in town next week. I want you to meet him.` I was not interested in Chabrol. DAMN!! I still say DAMN. Let me said something Danielle..when you are part of a time frame, a certain period you do not objectify yourself and your behaviour. It always amuses me having lived for as long as I have that everything I did and knew as everyday has now taken on strange historical significance. Weird! All best wishes, Sandra

@@alexandraponce8081 Almost lucky TWICE. This time 1967 or 1968 the year `The Two of Us` with Michel Simon was released. Head of Paramount pr Michael Weinberg (killed with 6 other Hollywood Jewish film executives in a car accident in Europe in the early Seventies) had probably arranged for Perkins to be waiting for us as we exited the cinema. Weinberg had invited me to the screening and for a meal after. He was tall and lithe. Leaning against a tree he almost seemed to be slithering up. STill divine. Attractive, lean, nervous.....Anyway when he saw us he started to make his way over but Weinberg did a detour..a complete about-face. As I did not know Perkins had intended to tag along I could not have queried Weinberg about it. At the restaurant he said and I did not understand it at the time `Claude Chabrol is coming to town next week. I want you to meet him`. Well I did not want to meet Chabrol. I would have liked to have met Perkins. and did not realize Weinberg had queered the meeting and was offering a substitute.

Ive been told i look a bit like him when i was very skinny but i think my cousin looks nearly identical to him.
I can't believe the cigarette advert. Bullshit to the extreme. BuT then is was 1958.
Just as well he didn't answer about being the works no.1 film star but seemed pleased almost ecstatic that he was being asked.
Unfortunately he became typecast and took those roles because they paid well and that's what actors do.
They go for the big money, people can disagree all they like but they're just fooling themselves, He'd have been offered many low budget film roles but would have turned them down even if he liked the script.
Hell let's be honest he wouldn't of even been interested in reading a script unless a big paycheck was at the end of it, that's how it works.
Anyway he never really became anywhere near as well known as a lot of his peers
Being typecasted was not his choice. Dude, have you seen his movies? There's no big paycheck going on after Psycho. Psycho ruined his career.

The Interviewer was too personal, too critical and asking questions that were tangentially related to Anthony.
Also, what kind of question is “are you lying?” Is this a talk show or an interrogation room with a single light bulb swinging from the ceiling.
That being said, I would *kill* to know exactly how Perkins felt about this.
