One of the best films ever made. Cast and production are perfect. Somerset's story was also a perfect fit. And a true story on top of that.

Gene Tierney is forgotten today but shouldn't be. Amazing actress and exquisitely beautiful. This is a great role for her. Tyrone Power is well cast. Herbert Marshall is superb. A very intelligent, ambitious film, when Hollywood was at its peak.

This is the movie I saw in Shanghai in 1940s. I was too young to understand and my mother had to explain to me, even then I could not understand it. Those were the days after WWII and the world was in a joyous mood. Unfortunately, the civil war came to China and dreams and hopes were shattered forever. When I saw the movie this morning all the nostalgia came back. For a journey in the memory lane, it is a bitter sweet experience.

Quite a film. A long term reader of Somerset Maughn, I find the film gets his aloof humanity just right. It's the writer's detachment, but also the eye of a man who thinks humans are, in an emotional sense, fascinating. It's a literary film, and the Indian bit, though without audio, is perhaps more eloquent in silence.

    • @deirdre108

I'm also fond of Maugham's writing and his somewhat cynical view of humanity. The actor who played him here was quite good, very much like I'd imagine the author to be. Maugham originally had studied medicine so I think his "writer's detachment" and fascination with human foibles might be partially the result of his education (as well as his natural inclination). This quality comes out much stronger in the novel than in the film, doesn't it?

A Great Film with so many fine performances. Herbert Marshall is for me the glue that holds the film together and while there are Excellent performances by a strong cast, he is just outstanding and that great voice. Maybe it is not perfect but it has a real charm to it and a wonderful air of mystery that I have rarely seen in a movie. I have it on DVD and watch it often. There something about it just works.

@@KutWrite@Cecilesavage Unfortunately the [CC] Closed Captioning also goes off, too. Maybe someone that knows this movie can provide a recap of those missing minutes and whether they are relevant to the storyline. I’ll thank him or her / they or them in advance for their assistance - Love this theatrical type of acting that ended with Marlon Brando and the Acting Studio style, that James Dean also brought forward.
It changed when 1968’s The Graduate choose Dustin Hoffman for the lead. Star Wars 1977 was the next big change that came to the big screen.

Pointless watching when so many parts of the film have been muted

I wish I would have read your comment before I spent one hour watching this movie. The loss of sound at a couple inopportune moments was excruciating unfortunate.
      I gave up.

When Elliot was talking about that drink 🍺 and taking a drop or two, I noticed Sophie noticing him sniffling in and sighing with anticipation and I noticed Isabella noticing the same thing that I had. I thought uh oh I could see Sophie’s downfall in Isabella’s evil 👿 intentions. 😈😈😈😈😈And as it turned out, I was right. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺😢😢😢😢😢

As Isabel says "common sense is never sympathetic"
I can totally agree with her.!!!!
