One of the best films ever made. Cast and production are perfect. Somerset's story was also a perfect fit. And a true story on top of that.
It is unforgivable to drop so much sound from this magnificent film.
Gene Tierney is forgotten today but shouldn't be. Amazing actress and exquisitely beautiful. This is a great role for her. Tyrone Power is well cast. Herbert Marshall is superb. A very intelligent, ambitious film, when Hollywood was at its peak.
I think she was the most beautiful woman ever. 😊
It amazes me how often the sound cuts off on these movies.
Several of the same actors as Laura, another great film of the same period.
Not forgotten by educated people. So, I guess you’re sadly correct.
This is the movie I saw in Shanghai in 1940s. I was too young to understand and my mother had to explain to me, even then I could not understand it. Those were the days after WWII and the world was in a joyous mood. Unfortunately, the civil war came to China and dreams and hopes were shattered forever. When I saw the movie this morning all the nostalgia came back. For a journey in the memory lane, it is a bitter sweet experience.
How old are you sir?
@@scottlaux6934 I was 11 years old
Amazing memory and cinematic experience for you. God bless you x
Quite a film. A long term reader of Somerset Maughn, I find the film gets his aloof humanity just right. It's the writer's detachment, but also the eye of a man who thinks humans are, in an emotional sense, fascinating. It's a literary film, and the Indian bit, though without audio, is perhaps more eloquent in silence.
I'm also fond of Maugham's writing and his somewhat cynical view of humanity. The actor who played him here was quite good, very much like I'd imagine the author to be. Maugham originally had studied medicine so I think his "writer's detachment" and fascination with human foibles might be partially the result of his education (as well as his natural inclination). This quality comes out much stronger in the novel than in the film, doesn't it?
Beautifully acted
This is the second film I've tried to watch on UA-cam with intermittent sound. What a sorry operation.
In my opinion Anne Baxter wins the award!! She is an excellent actor. Her portrayal in this role and in her role in All About Eve are remarkable!!!! 🥇 🏆
They never make movies like this anymore Maugham one of the greatest writers ever Gene was a great beauty and great actress but was very underrated
Gene Tierney. How magnificent
The sound goes out at 1 of the most critical points.
Anne Baxter gives a heartbreaking performance in this movie and earned a well deserved Oscar
Simply one of the most beautiful, beautifully acted and messaged pictures I have ever seen
Why does the audio go out during all the most dramatic scenes of spiritual epiphany?
this movie is an absolute masterpiece
Have watched all of Tierney's movies. Great actress💕
Love the movie but the sound issues
Two gorgeous people- Tyrone& Gene
Mercy. Forgiveness, and Love are open to us all to exercise. Why do we not?
Good movie.Rediculous that it kept losing the sound.
Clifton Webb is such a great actor.
Sound keeps cutting out. I give up.
Sound goes out at most important dialogue of movie!!! Why is this??!!
Wonderful movie, thank you for posting. Nothing better than a black and white movie.
Lovely movie thanks.
A Great Film with so many fine performances. Herbert Marshall is for me the glue that holds the film together and while there are Excellent performances by a strong cast, he is just outstanding and that great voice. Maybe it is not perfect but it has a real charm to it and a wonderful air of mystery that I have rarely seen in a movie. I have it on DVD and watch it often. There something about it just works.
Brilliant acting, directing, I only wish there were sound from the middle to the end! Spotty sound.
Isabell can be so cold-hearted at times.
The way the sound goes in and out this is a very annoying movie to watch I think I'll try to find it on another place.
You can follow along with the transcript
Please fix this sound problem,!!!!!
There is nothing more interesting than an old black and white film.Gene Tierney was lovely.A young Anne Baxter was pretty.
I was soo enjoying this, then the sound went!! 🤔😡
Great movie for the day. WAY better than Bill Murray.
That remake was awful and embarrassing. I saw it in the theater when it came out and people erupted in laughter when Bill was arriving in India on a little boat with this serious look on his face. He's just to silly looking for straight roles.
One of the best films I have seen.
Beautiful Movie, I loved the ending.
What a frightful snob Emit, Isabell’s father is!!! 😱😱😱🤗🤗🤗😅😅😅
You must mean her uncle.!!!!!
You must mean her uncle.!!!!!
For inquiring minds, $3000 (the amount he gets every year) in 1919 (assuming one year after the end of WWI) is equivalent to $54,372 in 2024.
Half way thru movie volume gave out and couldn't hear any dialog.
My favorite actress
Too bad the sound kicks out through this gem. Ruins the whole experience
Oh I shoulda checked the comments before resetting my phone ahah such a bummer great movie
Keep restarting it. Seems to resolve.
It cuts out then comes back on. It’s probably intentional.
Not even the subtitles during the mute sections. Sigh.
Missing sound. 😢
The sound cut out!!!!!!! For crying out loud!!!!!!!!!!! Please fix this.
For me too!!
Sound goes out briefly at abt 37 mins in.
I loved Gene Tierney in "Laura" and "Leave Her to Heaven".
That mother is wonderful.
I read the book many yeras ego when I was kid The best
Perfect picture sound quality on my phone watching this film on my phone
Nothing to do with you tube about the sudden break of sound more to do with who ever stream this film I dont know why the sound goes off.
Great movie
What great movie, what a great book.
❗James Dunn (Somerset Maugham) has always been vastly underated and overlooked. A fine character actor.
Thank you DDF for this beautifully executed film of the excellent novel by Somerset Maugham , an author of great perception as to the “human condition” . Just one thing though ,the sound seems to cut out intermittently , the problem mig(t be at my end but again thank you.
No it's not you! It happened to me also! ✝️🏞️❣️👍🏺🦅❤️🙏
No continues sound!🔥
The guy that was searching for his meaning for life should have read the Bible! He's just a lost soul looking for the meaning of life!👍✝️❣️
Wonderful movie! Back when movies were classy 😊😮
I'd recently viewed the 1984 remake with Bill Murray and thought that I must now see this. I'm glad I did. What more can be said about this book and film other than it has so many lessons on life that it beggars belief.

Bill was excellent and a fine choice for the remake. I loved it since seeing it when I was young.
@@govinda102000I've seen the version with Bill Murray once. Once was enough. I like Bill a lot. But not in this movie.
Sometimes people don't intentionally search but spirits can transfer. Women must be careful because spirits can transfer from a man and latch on to a woman. So whoever rhink that I am an idiot enough at my age to just not question what seems wrong, I know about the spirits that latch on to people but I enough knowledge to stay clean . The rest people stay pure and mine their own business. Worry about yourself not me. I have been a Christian longer and alive even longer.
I cam hear the sound.
Power of suggestion. It can be either a wonderful thing or a terrible thing. Whichever it is applied. A person may have a sunny disposition or adversely they may become a hypochondriac. I think Larry hypnotized Gray. 😊😊😊
It was good. Thank you
How can the perfect woman and the perfect man miss each other?
She was too greedy to be the perfect woman. The perfect woman would have understood his search and married him.
How can they not?
The sound needs fixing and the end needs more time. Very frustrating. But a wonderful film.
Much better than the Bill Murray one
Gorgeous Gene
Why does the volume always leave?
She seems to have a pretty nice house for someone with no money.
They are bring kept by Elliott Templeton, who couldn't stand to see them without even a servant to take care of the children.
And Anne Baxter plays Sofie, and a young English actress plays the secretary near the end, but cannot remember her name. Oh it was Elsa Lancaster. (Who was married in real life to Charles Laughton)
Lanchester. No longer so young in 1945 either.
The great bride of Frankenstein. He was wonderful in Witness for the Prosecution also with Tyrone Power.
I don't try ro judge people but I have met some weird demon possessef people who make mistakes too then pretend to be so holier than thou, pieces of snakes who questioned my personal worth. I can't stand the ones who preach then do worse rhings rhan a siinner.
"Sophie... How sweet of you and Bob to come!" Weren't they invited to her wedding? What a strange comment.
5-star cast.
Lost audio
Like that comment, that there is no purpose in life but to be 😊 happy
What an empty self-serving view of life.
@@rrc5122 Everything you do for anyone else is just a way to make yourself feel good. Calm down buddy.
thank you
Este filme tem partes sem som e sem legendas
The tranquility and tempo in the Novel some how lost in movie!
35:34 This is not what jazz sounded like in the 30’s. More like the 40’s.
Seek and you may find. Or the answers have always been there right in front of you the whole time. There is no purpose to life, only to be happy. Knowledgable to see that and wise enough to know. Kmc

Somerset's sound silent
The Indian Guru @ 53 mins has a ridiculous british accent..😳

I GUESS UA-cam MADE YOU TAKE OUT THE WORDS OF GOD & THE GREATEST WORDS OF THE ENTIRE MOVIE. I CANNOT WAIT FOR THE DAY UA-cam IS REPLACED
Never in a million years replace you tube you wind end up with something you might regret
Sound?
I have sond. ???
It's possible that you went deaf at the same moment by coincidence. Best to go to Emergency for a check up just to play safe.
Sound keeps disappearing for me too. Movie shouldn't be that old.
@@grindupBaker Or you go see a shrink
Where is the sound???

Ma non c'è la versione in italiano?
wish i knew what was said when te sound went out. might of explained the whole darn movie!!!
I AGREE 100000 %
W.Somerset Maugham¡¡¡
That is off that they erased the volumn the moment in the film he encountered the lord. Thats my guess. Every man has an emptiness in his soul or his heart. Until he meets Jesus..
He certainly didn’t meet Jesus. It was more “ new age” in India.
Nobody cares about your imaginary pet god and meeting it.

Lovely green that you see in the heart of a white rose 🌹. However, as for you Isabella, I see only a black rose as you can see only in the blackest rose. No room for any light at all to shine. 37:07 this video doesn’t have any sound at that point but is there a way to fix that please?
It comes back at 39:40
Out again at about 1:00:00 to 1:06:00.
Did no one check this?
@@KutWrite@Cecilesavage Unfortunately the [CC] Closed Captioning also goes off, too. Maybe someone that knows this movie can provide a recap of those missing minutes and whether they are relevant to the storyline. I’ll thank him or her / they or them in advance for their assistance - Love this theatrical type of acting that ended with Marlon Brando and the Acting Studio style, that James Dean also brought forward.
It changed when 1968’s The Graduate choose Dustin Hoffman for the lead. Star Wars 1977 was the next big change that came to the big screen.
Pointless watching when so many parts of the film have been muted
I wish I would have read your comment before I spent one hour watching this movie. The loss of sound at a couple inopportune moments was excruciating unfortunate.
I gave up.
You should still finish watching amazing movie

I wish I could make out what Herbert L says to Gene T...in the last few sentences...What does Tyrone have? He says "He's got it"...got what?
What life is about !
He says, goodness.
Problems with the sound in several places--ridiculous. Please fix.
When Elliot was talking about that drink 🍺 and taking a drop or two, I noticed Sophie noticing him sniffling in and sighing with anticipation and I noticed Isabella noticing the same thing that I had. I thought uh oh I could see Sophie’s downfall in Isabella’s evil 👿 intentions. 😈😈😈😈😈And as it turned out, I was right. 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺😢😢😢😢😢
As Isabel says "common sense is never sympathetic"
I can totally agree with her.!!!!
