  • George Harpo and Frank Samuelson took their boat, the Fox, across the Atlantic. Thus began the vacation of a lifetime. Four days into the trip, George heard a thump so powerful that it shook the boat. Find out more in this episode of Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story."

    I was a 16 inch gunnersmate on the battleship Missouri back in 1986. After a port visit to Sydney, Australia we headed for Hobart, Tasmania and ran into the worse storm I had seen since in the navy. We had waves crashing over the first 16 inch gun turret almost constantly. Well on the weather decks of a USN ship, you will see white boxes. Those are ready lockers made of heavy steel to store ammo for the gun mount that is close by.
    Those lockers are mounted to 2 strips of half inch steel welded to the deck and the locker has the same on the bottom. Then there are 4 holes on each side for the 3/4" bolts to secure the lockers. The morning after the storm we went topside and found a locker on the forward port side by the superstructure missing. That storm sheared off all eight 3/4" bolts and tossed the locker about 300 feet down the deck before going over the side. The teak deck was gouged all the way down and you could easily tell where the locker hit steel parts of the ship.
    There is another story on the funny side about this storm I still get a chuckle out of.

      That sounds terrifying. Based on your description, that was one heck of a powerful storm. :)

    This was certainly "the vacation of a lifetime!"!! One that neither Frank or George wished to ever consider repeating... I'm sure that there were many moments they prayed for and encountered God during their voyage... I can't imagine how frightening it must have been at times and how lonely it was at other times... I'll bet both men were greatly changed by the experience... But I also believe that they were glad to have been the first (on record) to take on this challenge and to have successfully accomplished their mission...

      @@BradDison Those are the first two lines of the drinking song from the movie Jaws. I'm just throwing that out there in case you hadn't put two and two together, that I wrote what I did both because it fit with the theme of the video and with your reference to the movie Jaws too. It was two birds with one stone. But I guess that's what I get for thinking I'm being clever. 😆

    Sorry, but I can't believe this exaggerated story 55 days in a row boat attacked by a White shark, little food and little protection from rainstorms and waves ! The boat had to be much, much bigger than a rowboat to endure all that !!

    • @BradDison
      @BradDison  5 місяців тому

      This story was highly covered by various newspapers at the time. That's really all we can go on. People have survived more days on the ocean with much less than those in this story. :)
