So far the thing that we have missed the most has been COFFEE, so this week we make coffee from roasted dandelion root and make a fried dandelion snack.
I remember my grandmother telling me stories about how her own mother used to make a dandelion wine out of all the dandelions from their yard. Its apparently really delicious if you can figure out how to make it.
I drink this just about every day. Luckily I have tons of dandelions. I encourage them in my gardens because I need the roots!
That's awesome. I really wish I had tried this sooner.
As it sounds like you do this regularly....Is it true it's better to harvest the roots in the Fall?
Also, do you make in in bulk and store it? How well does it keep once you've roasted it and ground it?
Sorry for all the questions.
Free food. I should give this a try. It look good. I love eating roots. I love the earthy flavor they gave out. I will make the tea too.
I'm loving your channel. I was just thinking the Plant Nasturtiam has a very peppery type flavor and grows very easily. May be a nice addition to your beautiful garden for the pepper spice.
Keep up the excellent informative videos and greetings from South Africa.
We used to have a dandelion & endive salad with hot bacon dressing. Yum.
Hello Stef and Chris. Just had to let you know that my Mom Salome and I made the Dandelion Root beverage and it is delicious! I put half a cup of the hot Dandelion beverage with half a cup of Hot Almond Milk and a splash of Hazel Nut Milk. Thanks Stef for the how to on the Hazel Nut Milk. So yummy! Anyway, then I added a couple of pinches of Nutmeg with honey to sweeten. My Mom and I are just so excited about this new hot beverage that is free of caffine. Keep the ideas coming.
So awesome , thanks for sharing your family’s adventures
Hi, I use Dandelion flowers to make honey like liquid. Just add sugar to flowers and leave for a few weeks out on sun. And leaves are a salad with cold or warm cooked potatoes. They are best before plant starts to flower. Greetings from Slovenia.
I love using all the dandelion! What an awesome weed 😎
I absolutely love this channel. I live in Australia and I'm trying to find different ways to be more self reliant when it comes food and drinks and I've really been enjoying your channel! Thanks so much for sharing your journey.
Thanks so much for the nice message. Glad you find it useful and are enjoying following along ❤
You can use the dandelion leaves in a salad. My mom made a dressing with mayonnaise, vinegar and sugar. You can make your own mayonnaise with eggs, olive oil and some lemon. And of coarse substitute the sugar with stevia. We use to have a dandelion fair at Waterloo park in Ontario, but they stopped it. They had so many different foods they used the dandelions in. Even had it in ice cream. Wish I had the recipe for some of these, from the fair!
best tine to gather the roots is in the fall, you will get the most nutrients and flavor
That's great to know. Thank you for the info. We'll definitely harvest more then.
What a wonderful experience
Wow great idea
I use the baby dandelion leaves in salad and make dandelion syrup and jelly. have had tea before. have not tried them fried and I just got an air fryer I need to learn to use so I will be trying then!
Although this was enjoyable, and I love dandelion coffee and deep fried dandelion flowers, I prefer watching her eat chicken @!cks!!! Lol, sorry, I couldn't resist! 🤣
Dandelion we never know can for make tea.. Twin love dandelion for play have beautiful flowers.. thank you Chris for sharing maybe try to make salad looks taste yummy you try
Came here from "food not lawns" Facebook group!! Keep posting!!!!
I love watching your channel. Interesting videos shared👏
Very interesting..never heard such a thing!
The dandelion is a great plant. Dandelion coffee is very tasty and satisfying. The flower is even more nutritious than the leaves or the root. Great video, new sub! 👍
Really?
@@motherhoodsbeauty9279 Yes it really is. The stinging nettle is worthy of some research too.
I think those dandelion flowers would also taste quite good as a sweet snack since they already have a natural sweetness.
I make dandelion salve for all minor skin irritations and injuries. Yesterday I sun burned my back (took off my shirt after applying sunscreen like a goober). I put dandelion salve all over before bed and today it's fine.
You can make zucchini flowers the same way. Omg its so good
merci pour ces découvertes !!
Brilliant 😊
This is quite interesting friend. I will try doing it one day👌
You are just amazing. Your videos are awesome 👏👏
Excellent ! I enjoyed this😇
gracias por compartir esta receta
Omg this dandelion around me just thinking grass beautiful flower never try for eat.. maybe i Will try

Great video! So many uses for dandelions. Love it
Undoubtedly a very awesome experience 👌
Yum yum I wanna try the fried dandelions with the classic yellow mustard and ketchup
so interresting !!
Superbe travail je prends plaisir à visionner tes videos merci du partage
As we watched your video my wife and I had Dandelion tea for the first time. I wasn't sure what to expect but now I can't believe it's not coffee! That's a great alternative to decaf and without all the related chemicals. That's awesome! Now if you will excuse me, I'm going back to my newly discovered Dandelion tea.
Isn't it amazing how similar it tastes? I never would have thought.
So im back watched this video forever ago but I learned you can also use milk thistle seeds as a coffee substitute as well!! It grows here where I am jist like dandelions 🥰🥰🥰
merci pour cette chouette video
Wow! I will definetly try to make this coffee.
c'est trop intéressant !!!
Lovely video!
excelente video.
That's insane! No idea dandelions can be used for coffee. Enjoy every sip of it!😁
you can also roast date seeds (from palms) and make coffee out of that- old arab trick. really healthy too.
Apparently you can use the seeds from Queen Anne’s lace flower heads for a pepper substitute. 🤷♀️
Love your channel! Wish my husband would do this. Lol.
Anyway, try using pulp from hazelnut milk to make flour. Nut flours are great!
Yes, we actually talked about that while we were making this video that we really need to do that. We have put it off for way too long.
Dandelion leaves are good steamed. I have heard more of the Chickory which you mentioned. Dandelion leaves are much less bitter before the plant blossoms.
I live in a zone 4, so my wild plants are probably much different than you do. I was interested in your mention of Jerusalem Artichoke. A cousin gave me a few about 45 years ago and my patch has spread greatly.
Thanks for the message. Yes, we have definitely been warned to be careful about how fast they spread.
This was awesome!
Thing about dandelions is that they are a diuretic, so should be used with caution (if not outright avoided) if you have kidney issues.
Coffee is a diuretic too.
Wow this grass can make food
You can do coffee with chickpeas also, same process. Roast the chickpeas, grind and ready to make coffee. I have this one before, its good and healthy.
I like your videos.
Good luck
if you grow chickpeas you can make coffee from chickpeas. it's quite popular in certain regions of the world.
Merci pour le partage vous vous exprimez très clairement :)
You guys are fun to watch! I will try making dandelion root coffee myself now that I watched your video. Thanks for your video
Thanks Mathias. We found it amazing how much it actually tasted like coffee
merci beaucoup pour ce partage !!
you can also use chicory which is a weed as well
That is on our list to try too :)
Dandelions are my absolute favorite snack flower. They are so versatile and can be used in so many ways. Dandelion jelly is amazing and taste's like super sweet Honey
Any chance of a recipe?
@@michaelpeterson2024 let me go look I actually found the recipe searching UA-cam

danelions slad is good too 😋
If the coffee, etc. tastes good you should collect and spread dandelion seeds in containers in an enclosed environment ( green house etc )... to get more material to work with and also keep them out of your grass! 😀
I have got to try this!!!
It tasted way more like coffee than we thought it would
Could use celery leaves they have a a peppery taste. Also makes a beautiful pesto
Tres bonne video :)
very nice
There is a long, thin tool called an asparagus picker that also works well on dandelions.
c'est vraiment intéressant à voir :)
Great vid guys , 3 thumbs up on this one !!!
Coffee looked great .... wish it was smell-o-vision
Should grow buckwheat. Grows to harvest much faster and tue greens are edible. Give bees a fantastic early boost too
Good to know. That would be great to find something that helps the bees too.
@@LovinofftheLand makes a great flour. Not to mention its a great hot cereal.
you should try growing amaranth for flour.
buena receta
So what did you think of the dandelion pesto? I know you didn't film it... but how was it tasting?
It was really good. Thanks for asking. I think we still like the Nettle Walnut Pesto better though
@@LovinofftheLand awesome to hear!!! Do you happen to know if you have the weed called garlic mustard up there? It grows EVERYWHERE here in upstate ny and my girls and I made a pretty tasty pesto last spring with it... we might be able to grt out and get some this weekend before everyone and everything mows and sprays for the first of rhe season... we have the dandelion, and fiddle heads and alot of other things you have? Might be worth looking into!
Love your channel you can also use acorn to make coffee. I made it once, it's really time consuming to make, i guess dandelions is quicker😉
That is in our list to try too
like it
Maybe you can use your milk meal instead of flour for stuff like this.
I have been wanting to do this a while now! I feel like I should tape off some dandelions so my Grandpa doesn't spray them. He will think I have gone mad.
A hori hori tool is perfect for digging up dandelions, and tons of other things.
Thanks for the tip. Havent heard of that so will look that up ❤
@@LovinofftheLand I highly recommend the one that Bare Bones sells. ❤️
dandelion coffee has been around for a long time. some old hippie health gurus were drinking it 50 years ago in Germany already.
You should try and grow a coffee bean plant. Does take about 3-4 years to mature and get the beans, idk how long you plan on loving off the land?
We actually got one for Christmas. Fingers crossed for 3 years from now. Lol
@@LovinofftheLand fingers crossed 🤞🏼
nicevideo
So he said to put in the oven for 15 minutes, but he didn’t say what temp to set the oven at… would you say maybe 250 degrees?
So curious how this taste like...if I have completely nothing to do in one day I will probably try making it 😆
Tastes surprisingly like coffee :)
Wow never thinking dandelion can for eat
naature is life
How was the first sip like?😆
You ight want to try nasturtium or arugula for a pepper flavoring
Love nasturtiums. Will definitely be growing even more next year
Oh No dandelion you can Make tea , i think That’s Only grass with beutiful flower
Ah the last dandelion
Omg, I missed it. Did y'all grow wheat??!!
Yes, we did but haven't done a video yet. Will do one before the end of the challenge :)
Super video vous etes tres beaux tout les deux :)
Wow you try grass Dandelion for make tea 😱
Perfect timing im just about to cut the grass! Lmao actually tho, good timing
It surprisingly tasted a lot more like coffee than I thought 🤷♂️ and super healthy
@@LovinofftheLand Free coffee? Let the harvest begin!
Let us know what you think if you try it
This is wonderful, I look and remember my dream.
Those roots could have been cooked longer. I've roasted them almost black and they taste more like coffee to me that way.
agreed. they need to be roasted properly
Have you done a video on your flour and the process to get the flour?
Not yet, but we have a bunch growing now so will do a video before the end of the challenge :)
@@LovinofftheLand I was about to ask the same thing! Can't wait!
A hand spade is the wrong tool for getting the root out.
Get one of those HUGE LONG screwdrivers, like 14' to 18" long and shove it in the ground next to the root, then wiggle it around, then if the root did not come lose, repeat the process on the other side of the root, and you should get most of it.
I've mad that "Coffee" and it tastes like CRAP mixed in with dirt. Seriously am not interested in trying it again!
Better flour
Dude ... Why take the dandilions in the lawn ..
Those in the borders those in the wild ... Wont mess up your lawn ..
We froze 4 lawns worth of petals to make jam! Mom needs to get ahold of some pectin! We are making wild violet syrup today! Using some raw honey!
That's amazing. Next year we want to mix flowers in with out honey 🍯. That apparently preserves them really well..
And is obviously delicious
@@LovinofftheLand fantastic! We are going to add the last of our raw honey in with the wild violet infused water/tea! My kids were amazed watching the cool blue go to purple by adding lemon juice! Momma! Its magic!
Any caffeine in that? If not then why? Lol.. thats one thing I wouldn't hold against you for this trial... Coffee.
@@HiddenValleyHomestead for us? We live in a suburb with a tiny yard...but my 7 yr old loves all things gardening... and she loves to learn about all things nature inspired... so making violet syrup for drinks and sodas...and dandelion jam to share with neighbors and pick allllll those flowers... and learn about things in nature...i am 100% here for it! For me if I were doing this... coffee would be my one...if I had to buy it ... I would escape clause...but then I'd need cream... etc so id have to figure something out!
@@jujube2407 So awesome!! Yes. Coffee would be the one thing but we actually make our own creamer with lowfat milk, syrup and evaporated milk... Way better than storebought... but there's so many natural options like oatmilk, almond milk, honey etc... You really could do everything natural and homemade right? And if you really wanted to be a true DIYer you could buy coffee beans eh? But I get what these guys are trying to do by living off what they can get right on their own place! We will be hunting and growing 90% of our own food as well....Live this channel
