English is the same, but people don't speak grammatically correct. If you say, "You didn't eat?" in English and the answer is yes, it means that person didn't eat. If you say, "You didn't eat?" in English, and the answer is no, it means the person did eat. It's the same as she is saying for Korean, but as most people know, when people speak in English there are a lot of grammatical errors in their speech. Another example of incorrect grammar in English speech is that many people end a sentence in a preposition which is a grammatical no-no. For example, "Where are you coming from?" Grammatically, this should be spoken as "From where are you coming?", but you rarely hear people speak this way.

Siiiim! Eu vivo confusa com isso, aí tenho que explicar a minha resposta pra não confundir ninguém. Ainda mais quando colocam duas negativas na frase, aí buga tudo. "Você não gosta disso não?" kkkk porque negativo com negativo vira positivo né? aaaaa
Pra mim isso é extremamente fácil, afinal é o mais lógico, o que faz mais sentido. Sempre achei essa nossa forma de falar em português errada e sem sentido, pq é kkkk tem q ser bem lerdo pra não entender isso...

😂 é que tipo o raciocínio deles é diferente porque o "não" e "sim" deles é usado pra contrariar ou afirmar a pessoa e no nosso caso a gente responde a pergunta. Tipo em português: "vc não gosta do seu namorado?" "Não!(não gosto)" já em coreano "Não (vc está errada)"
É que tbm nós respondemos usando mais o verbo do q "sim", tipo "vc não gosta do seu namorado?" "Gosto!" Pq se falar "sim" fica estranho

As a native Spanish speaker we have the same problem as English, and I remember every time we have to take personality tests (that things that ask you "Are you the type of person that does...") we all get confused when we found a negative question, because sometimes it doesn't matter if you answer yes or not, it means the same thing. Like:
"No le dijiste ¿cierto?" (u didn't tell him/her right?) and the answers could be "No, no le dije" (No, I didn't tell him/her) or "Sí, (cierto) no le dije" (Yes, that's right, I didn't tell him/her)

Well hello, a little french speaker here
In fact, when I was young, I used to use "Yes" and "No" like in Korean. In many of languages, you say "No" when you want to say that something is negative and "Yes" when you want to say something positive. I mean, we don't even care if the question is positive or negative, and "Yes" and "No" where just about the answer
And when I was young, I used to take the negative or positive form of the questin in count to respond. So when I was saying "No" to a positive question, that was "Yes" and that was more logical for me. Like in Korean, I guess ?
Also I don't know if it's just us, french speakers, or all the people who use "Yes" and "No" like us, but often, the one who ask you a question would add "Yes you do or yes you don't" or "No you don't or no you do" if we just answer by "Yes" or "No"

This is a really good explanation on how to handle negative questions. When someone first told me about this principle I didn't understand what was so confusing, but then as I encountered negative questions in the flow of real conversations I constantly got flipped upside down. I still do. It sounds like a simple concept, but in reality it's really difficult to adjust to for English speakers. I've heard the reverse is also true for Koreans.

By the way, Yes (Hai) and No (Ie) logic in Japanese works just the same way as in Korean. So everything she explained in this vod applies to Yes/no logic in Japanese.

Yes! Finally! In Polish it's the same case. Yes/tak is used when someone agrees with what other person said, his/her statement. And no/nie when someone disagrees. I've had so much difficulties with understanding why English is so messed up ;x

When I was a kid I would always answer questions in the "korean way" because for me it made much more sense! But after many misunderstandment I learned how to give the right answers....

That's so interesting, Lara! It reminds me of French (not sure if you are acquainted). While "Oui" confirms the sentence (Yes, I don't...), "Si" negates the negative, therefore meaning, Yes, I DO like...
Since you're learning Portuguese, I'll give you a tip: you always repeat the verb. To a sentence such as "Você não comeu?" (Didn't you eat?), you answer "Comi" (I ate). "Você não vem?" (Aren't you coming?), "Vou" (Yes, I'm going). "Não" in that context means you did not eat/are not going, you can add the verb for clarity: Não comi (I didn't eat), Não vou (I'm not going).

As for the coming (vir) and going (ir), I realized after a long time that the usage is different in English and Portuguese. One would never say "Yes, I'm coming to the party" but instead "Sim, estou INDO (not "VINDO") para a festa". Sometimes if we stick to the rules that to go means always ir and to come means vir, we'll be in error. Ask your boyfriend! In my experience, in negative questions the answer "Sim" is never clear: that's why we make a new sentence by conjugating the verb (comi/vou). 😘

Em português é bem parecido! Se a pessoa perguntar "você não gosta de sorvete?" e alguém responder algo do tipo "aham" ou "sim", é pra dizer que "Sim, eu não gosto" hahaha
