    Thanks man. You gave me a lot to think about. I just bought an '85 Z28 from a good friend for $2000. Garage kept, new paint and trans, but it looks like it needs head gaskets. He didn't know about that. Your videos helped me with a few issues, and relieved me that the car doesn't have many of the more common issues that you talked about. I'm just looking for a clean body, I do not care very much about the condition of the engine or tranny, because they will be the first to go. This was some helpful information, thank you. At about which torque number should I start to be concerned with the integrity of the unibody and subframe? (assuming i do not have T-tops). I have a 1986 berlinetta 305 V8 with t-top. I bought it as a project car. But I wish I knew more about cars that would let me know if the 305 is in good shape and if anything is unattached. People told me keep the engine with the carburetor. The dash is digital plus the switch for blinker is on dash and they might need to be re-soldered and put back in. But last year my stupid key got stuck in the lock to turn it on so I need to get that fixed. I'm surprised you forgot to mention the common rust that eats through the bottom of the outside of the door panels. Also the common areas where rust and animals eat through like in. Bottom of trunk and engine bay like under battery. It seems they don't make as many 3rd gen replacement parts like doors so they are kinda hard to come by.

    Great videos I watched all 3 parts! I got a 91 Camaro RS with the 5.0 TBI and when in Park it doesn’t idle correctly. In park the RPMs keep going up and down up and down, it’s looping and hunting for a steady idle but it just keeps going up and down. I’m not sure what this is and was wondering if you have any idea what it could be? One thing that I noticed is that when I go to shift it into any gear other than park like “D” Drive gear, the idle smoothes out and it stops looping. Another weird thing is if I put it back into park after it being in another gear for example “D” drive gear, the idle becomes smooth in Park gear. But once I shut the vehicle off and start it again the idle will be all loopy again until I put it in a gear other than park again. Any ideas on what it could be?

    • @shadygingergarage
      @shadygingergarage  4 роки тому

      Unfortunately I've never run into that problem. Despite major abuse my TBI 5.0 runs and idles pretty well. She takes longer to fire up when cold then I would like but she runs well overall. My best recommendation is to join "Malaise Motors" on Facebook. There's a bunch of guys on there that are pretty good with OBD-1 systems and they may have more experience with TBI system issues. It could be as simple as a bad ground.

    • @shadygingergarage

      No. Not unless you find one in rediculously good condition. Even then, only buy a V8 car. The newest third Gen (1992) is still a 28 year old car. The 1992 Chevrolet Caprice/Buick Roadmaster would be a far better first car. They share a lot of DNA but the Caprice/Roadmaster will take far more physical abuse and are easier to work on. The Camaro has a lot of tight clearances and things such as replacing a fuel pump are much more involved tasks on the Camaro. The Caprice is a great car to cut your teeth on and it still has the 305 and 350 as optional engines.
