Hi Mike, I have my own 1999 Malawi 110 (in Malawi)! The temp gauge was bouncing from medium to max. It was the first time this afternoon. I suspect a short around thermostat, as it was raining very heavily (monsoon) (it was also my first time using the headlights and wipers). I stopped when I saw the max gauge out of panic and thought I'll try and record it and obviously the gauge acted normally! Thanks for your video though. Btw, I bought mobile data for my ex land Rover Malawi dealer mechanic, who is now my mechanic in order to learn from your videos. Thank you for sharing your knowledge with the world!
Amazing thank you, me when the heater is switched on the temp jumps up and the Oil pressure gauge decreases too. will have a play with the negative wiring. Top man.
If you have a ROW (Rest of World) Defender, it comes with the green sensor (AMR1425), since it uses the 300tdi engine, but has the TD5 instrument gauges.
Fantastic report so very helpful, only problem is the distance from camera and dials is too far to see any movement of the dial..... But the report is so exact, you totally understand it without looking at the dials...
Hi Mike, thanks for the excellent video. The 12 V water temp gauge of our Series III reading is too hot, despite we fitted a Series temp sensor via adapter to the 200TDi, which we swapped into the truck. The voltage stabilzer provides 10 V DC. We measured water temp by an infrared temp meter at different points (thermostat housing, radiator, e.g.), showing about 80 to 90 °C, while the needle of the gauge just touches " red".
Well you have done what I would have done! It has been a looooong time since I had a series here, but is there a calibration screw in the back of the gauge? Mike
Thanks for video Mike, solved my problem. My temperature raised till high level on my defender, but when measured with fluke I read 87°C. Then I replaced the green sensor with black one a have now reading that is in the middle of the gauge.
Hi Mike , thanks for all the videos. My 300 tdi defender also increse temperature reading with lights on and even more with the combination of lights + turn signals I gess this happens because some loose or bad ground conection . Regards and keep posting !
Excellent Mike! One question. Defender V8 3.5L carb, normal temp within the city but on highway runs hot between 88 and 98 according the gauge. Just at the end of white band. It happens either with ac on or off. Ac recently installed. Do you think the condenser blocks the engine radiator in front of it or new water pump is faulty? Or something else? Thanks Mike
Great video. I have a black sensor with the same defender gauge in you video. It worked fine, but two days ago it stopped working properly. On engine starting the gauge slowly goes right up to beyond red, even at idle. Taking the wire off the sensor and the gauge drops. Ground it and it goes right back up. Does this mean the gauge is working correctly? It would then point to the sensor? Any other checks I can do? Thanks!
If you ground the wire to the sensor the gauge should got straight to red -if not - bad wire or gauge - if it goes to red then all ok - could be a sensor problem
Britannica Restorations Ltd hi again. Tested as you said and suggested - grounded wire and gauge shot up. So replaced the sensor, but getting the exact same reading! Any other tests I can do before replacing the gauge?
Excellent video Mike. Quick question. My temperature gauge been sending me crazy. it moves just a hair, whether hot or cold. The gauge works when tested, the wire works, and i have 3 new senders. My vehicle though is a 2002 military 110 (300 tdi with td5 guages). I seem to have an extra wire in the back of the temp guage (3 wires) and someone told me that that comes from a resistor in the speedo. Problem is my speedo is disconnected... so i am wondering if that is causing my temp cause not to work. Any thoughts?
My TD5 Defenders tempreture gauge start jumping when one putt the heater blower on putt it off then it jumps up and down fast go to 0 en then go back to 80 degrees celcius
mike quick question ive got a 300 tdi out of a disco in my defender what temp sender do i need for the gauge to work with either a 200 tdi gauage or a td5 gauge as ive found out the disco one dont work with defender temp gauge might be a handy one for your viewers hope you can help

Hi Mike! The temperature gauge on my Defender 90/200 tdi started to work strange. When I start the engine and I start to drive, after several minutes the temperature gauge works fine but suddenly it starts to reach the red zone, but never exceeing it. Some times the needle only raises just a little bit than normal. After some seconds the needle drops again to its normal possition. A few weeks ago I was on the line waiting to fill the diesel tank and as I was looking to the gauge (what I can not avoid😂) I saw the needle going to the red zone. I started to think how could this be because the engine head has been completly replace for a new one and the car has been restored about two months ago. As I was desperate I decided to hit the clock with my finger and guess what... the neddle dropped again to it normal position. After realicing that only a light finger hit on the clock would make the gauge work again in a propper way I decided to test it while driving. Everytime the temperature raise I hit the clock an it goes down again to the normal position. I'm quite sure the sender is not the problem (is new and is the right one). I also thought that it coud be the gauge but if I hit the clock it starts to work fine again. What could it be then? Is actually the gauge broken "inside" or is it the ground wire behind the gauge that is maybe partial disconected and each time I hit the clock it makes the right ground again? I tried to take apart the dash but the wires are so narrow the only thing I could see is that everythings apears to be well conected. Any idea what could be happening? This issue started to happen after I tried to take apart the dash to fix it because the plastic on the right down corner was craked, any wire is maybe pressing some other wire and causing this issue?... who knows . Many thanks Mike!
Hi again Mike! I have just taken apart the dash to have a look behind the gauge. As you explain in your video, there are two wires, positive and negative. There is also the wire that goes to the lightbulb (no problems with it). I have also done the test disconecting the wire from the sender and conecting it to the engine block which made the needle going up. As you explain seems that the gauge works fine. So far everything was OK but... I found what I think is the problem. When you see the gauge from behind, there is a round nut which can be screwed by hand, this nut screws the gauge to the dash and it also has a black wire, this round nut was loosen and the black wire was also loosen and moving a bit (I notice the fuel gauge also has this black wire in the round nut). You don't say nothing about this black wire, that was loosen in my case. Should it have this black wire? Do you think that this could be the problem? Did not have time to drive and test the landy. Is this black wire other ground wire? Many thanks. Saludos desde España 😉
Today I went for a ride to test the gauge and now after screwing the round nut which was loosen and holds that black wire, it works fine again. The needle doesn't move anymore once it reaches the optimal temperature. Problem solved. Hope this can help someone else.
Mumtaz != Excellent ! 👍 It would be great if you could find someone to help you with the video. The gauge is far from the camera. Now it stops at the first quarter of the gauge as if the engine is cold. What is the standard place for the indicator? Hi Mike, the gauge on my 110 is reading high when the engine is at temperature. It was converted from a 19j to a 300tdi out of a Disco and has the correct black sending unit. Do you know if there is a fix to make it read at 1/2 instead of 3/4?
It's an hours counter - handy for keeping track of oil changes etc, but also how many hours the truck has run for rather than working from miles/kms etc
Had these fitted as standard to both my Perentie 6x6, but that’s probably any Aussie military requirement unlikely our own military ones which run for hours stationary in FFR use.
