I live in Venice, The Caltrava Bridge may be not accessible for people on their wheelchair, but it guarantees all the others who can walk to have one after crossing it whith rain
And don't even get me started on what happens when it freezes over in the winter. I live half an hour away from Venice, and I was slightly baffled too when I saw it!
@@cormacmacsuibhne2867 In winter temperatures can range from 3 to 8 Celsius during the day, but it can easily go below zero during the night. Snow a couple times a year is not uncommon, and it is very common to find bridges and streets frozen in the morning.
What you called "waste collection boats" it's actually a hotel sheets & towels delivery. Waste collection boats are all green and each one has one compartment for recyclable and one for unrecyclable waste.
Yeah, sometimes. Both italian and worldwide tourists of course. The problem is that many people don't realize that Venice is a city, that we are citizens and we live there. It seems like most of the tourists think is some sort of Water Disneyland. It's really annoying
I cross that bridge almost every day, it's an architectural and aesthetic disgrace, not to mention the lack of access for the disabled, which is unforgivable.
@@livefreeordie42 trust me, they are more expensive that any other "normal" road. Boats are much more costly to build and maintain to an equivalent car and do not get me started on the cost of maintenance of the canal and building foundations. Getting around the city is painfully slow for the size.
The cost of living is higher in Venice than almost anywhere else. Partly to blame is the over-tourism, which makes housing for locals harder to find (the AirBnB effect, but it started before AirBnB). More so than many cities it is entirely reliant on tourism too, without tourists there would basically be no economy. A lot of what most locals hate is the constant arrival of cruise ships, they drop off thousands of tourists who stay for very little time, they don't benefit the local community, and don't contribute to the local economy. They eat, sleep, and drink in the cruise ship, and just spend the short time they have wandering around and crowding the city. As for waterways being more efficient, I don't see how, they are lower capacity than the equivalent paved roads, dredging is very expensive, the grand canal often has traffic jams during peak times, the pollution from boats is much higher than the equivalent car or truck. This is another reason why cost of living in Venice is high, products come by road, get transferred to small inefficient and slow boats and then lots of manpower is needed to transport to anywhere not directly on the canal. Venice is a beautiful place, I love visiting there, but in recent years it has suffered from cheap imported tat filling souvenir shops, illegal immigrants setting up stalls selling knock-off products, and it's getting harder and harder to find decent restaurants, that aren't just there to take advantage of tourists.
Hi, I live in Venice, and I can tell you that the Calatrava bridge is as strange as it is hated by the Venetians. It was poorly designed and requires continued maintenance and waste of money. Furthermore, in winter it becomes a deadly trap, due to the glass steps, which become slippery with humidity. I love Venice and I love living there, but the Calatrava bridge is the only thing I would change about her.
I didn't mind that bridge at first, it's located on the more modern part of the city after all. After the 10th time I almost slipped for no explicable reason, I completely changed my mind.
Urg, I remember my own gruelling trek across the Ponte della Costituzione. Just the thought of lugging my massive suitcase up those steps makes me cringe a little!
The moral of this is is that we need to continue campaigning for the widespread adoption of the social model of disability and of including people with disabilities in the planning stage.
I cross the Ponte della Costituzione at least twice a day. After all this years I'm still wandering why no one has replaced the glass tiles with stone ones like in the center. People cannot see the water down anyway, the glass is opaque, boats do not care looking at people shoses and I do not want to risk breaking my neck every times it rains.
Because, otherwise, Calatrava would had had them fined. Slightly modification of his "art work". he refuses to modificate himself, and he has an army of lawyers behind him.
I crossed that bridge last year with luggage to get from the train station to a tram that takes passengers to the cruise ship docks. It's location is absolutely essential. Cruise ships are big business in Venice & getting to where they are after arriving by train would be crazy without that bridge. The design is weird though, since many of the people using it are pulling rolling luggage up & down those silly steps. Textured pavement would have made a lot of sense instead of slippery glass steps.
When I went to Venice, the Rialto bridge was having repairs done to it. Thankfully we could still walk across it, but was slightly disappointing to not be able to see the most famous Venetian sight without scaffolding covering every inch of it

People don't mind the aesthetic, and it's actually culturally important to avoid faking an ancient bridge, what's more, the surrounding of that bridge is actually quite recent (
It's only 300 meters from the other bridge. But since it was built in 2008, it should be more user friendly. It looks modern and should have futuristic features if it hopes to look to the future. Venice is built on swampy areas and it is a challenging place infrastructurally.
When I went to Venice, I crossed this bridge, and I thought it was kinda cool looking. But I'm a fan of Calatrava, and I'm from NY where old and modern buildings are right next to eachother in stark contrast. I loved the steel structure, it reminded me of a boat hull (which is what the architect was going for), but I did trip walking on that glass. In retrospect, glass might not have been the best material for that bridge.
I tripped on that bridge last time I was in Venice. Aside from how out of place it looks, it’s just so awkward going up and down; the steps are uneven and hard to see. When I got to the “crown”, I couldn’t tell where the steps started to descend, and I lost my balance (granted I was in a hurry to make my train).

I like that new bridge. It's surely different from the typical venetian style, but it does fit in with elegance and without screaming "hey look at me!" like other bridges do. The real problem is that it really is stupid. Glass steps at an angle? Seriously??
Fun fact I went to Venise not long ago and it wasn’t raining or anything but it was pretty dark and I missed a step and fell, it was my first day in Venice and I never stood a feet back on this bridge. Instead I simply took a Vaporetto which is one stop away to the station ( literally 30seconds ) or the Scalzi bridge ( a lot safer )
That's what a modern bridge should look like, it's ridiculous to make a fake baroque style bridge...they didn't make fake renaissance bridges in the 18th century. Obviously it shouldn't be made of stairs and everyone involved in that decision should be fired.
The bridge is beautiful, elegant. Functionality is sadly not taken into account, but calling a modern elegancy ugly requires a great amount of ignorance.

It's very surprising how Venice is thriving with no cars . One of the most amazing cities in the world.
It is suffering mightily from overtourism. The cost of living is prohibitive and locals are having to move away. Cruise ships are the biggest culprit.
