  • How can you be sure that any particular memory is true?
Julia Shaw takes you on an adventure into the weird world of memory hacking. She shows that through a combination of perceptual flaws, brain biases, and social influences, your memories can be easily influenced. Armed with science, she explores how even some of your most cherished and emotional memories might be nothing but fiction.
By the end she’ll have you wondering whether you actually are who you think you are, or whether your autobiography is just a compelling illusion.
    ------------------------------------------------------------------------
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Research tells us we remember what we pay attention to. We forget what we don't pay attention to. Makes sense!

I've found heaps of times that people have completely different memories of events. When my son died all 4 adults present had different versions of what they were doing and where etc'. But in the everyday life, think about how many times a couple disagree, both thinking they are remembering right.

I have memories of the olden days and the things I did in these days. Also, there are things we got in the olden days such as papers, cards etc.

I always dare to question all my memories. Especially because of both my diagnosis of full-blown false-memory syndrome and my lifelong sensitivity to the Mandela Effect.
Thank you so much, Julia, for reminding us all that questioning our memories is quite okay.

I think that her main message is that our memories are so malleable that it’s all the more realistic to base ourselves on the now instead of the past. I know this to be true having met some people from my past who seem to remember me differently. Specifically in better ways that can make me question my own memories of them that were otherwise upsetting. It’s an obvious relief if it encourages us to finally let go of some painful memories. There’s also retro-causality which means that via the Law of Intention we can change the past within reason.

I don't think she was forcing that smile. I think she was happy to be on the stage talking about something she's passionate about.

I completely understand what she’s talking about, but it’s easy for me to separate false memories from reality. And the fact she is trying to make something hard from it by asking -“is it real memories or no? How might you know?”, well it’s strange

I watch one of her videos where she had made the statement you can't remember anything before the age of two and a half that it is impossible well she is absolutely one hundred percent wrong.
I remember when I was about nine months old I was standing in my crib and I remember exact words my dad said to my mother and I remember exactly where my mother was standing in the kitchen I could almost tell you exactly what time of the day it was according to the position of the sun so I wouldn't believe everything that this person says she's got some really good points but she made a statement that she should have thought about before she even said it.

I don’t think she’s talking so much about traumatic memories being false tho; she starts off by talking about **positive** memories being false (the good ‘ol days; making AmeriKKKa white again) but yes, why is it that people never dare question when someone claims they had a great childhood and family relations but the second you mention anything questionable about being a child, people deny your reality?
