I was a little disappointed with how this episode panned out:
1. Joe should have removed himself from Wale's corner and spoken frankly on every point that was brought up. Instead, he just kept co-signing Wale and shitting on Ak.
2. Ak and no one else brought up brands. The fact of the matter is that everyone nowadays is a brand; like Ak says quality does not equal sales and vice versa. The Wale brand is weak, especially when compared to the people he came in with (i.e Drake, Kid Cudi, J.Cole). (Anyone else remember that picture of Cudi, Drake, and Wale on laundry machines from like 08/09?) Like Wale said, he brought on a negative perception of his person by himself. Yet, he glossed over this, saying that he's found his peace. I doubt it because of his track record and how he comes off.
3. The flop conversation was not given its proper treatment because Wale (and Joe) kept shutting it down. Like Ak mentioned, Wale's previous albums sold more than Shine. By the business definition of flop, Wale flopped with his most recent album. No ifs or buts. Wale says his roll out was weak etc., but like he said, he's done Ellen, SNL, has hit records. Even with a weak roll out, he should sell more than what Shine did. Wale's brand is weak, though. Wale says he can't call Shine a flop because it connected with his fans the most, but if he was not in this business to sell records, why wouldn't he just record in his basement (I'm paraphrasing something I believe Joe said on this show before). Drake, Cudi, and J. Cole have all consistently (Cudi = eh) sold more than Wale has even if their roll out isn't as intricate or elaborate (J. Cole being the main culprit). These artists have good brands.
4. Wale and Joe shitting on Ak for not posting about what can be summed up as "real" hip hop music and culture was silly of them. Ak has influence, yes, but he has no obligation to post about the stuff Wale and Joe would approve of. Why doesn't Wale get write-ups like an XXXtentacion or Kendrick Lamar?
a. Weak brand
b. No substantial army behind him (fans or label)
c. May have burned some bridges
5. Wale wants to complain about his great music going unnoticed but that's the way shit goes. There may be a SoundCloud rapper making great ass music, but I will probably never hear it because the factors aren't in place. This issue spans all genres and all decades. Wale does come off as entitled but shouldn't because: a. He isn't producing TOP NOTCH music on a consistent basis and b. Hasn't cultivated a brand worthwhile investing in.
TL;DR: Good job, Ak. Joe, I'm disappointed. Wale, I think you'll continue believing what you want. Nadeska, hang in there.
