  • Project to make some custom accessories for my collapsible contractors saw. I love this saw... It's precise, cuts very well, and has plenty of power. The only issue I have, is that I wish it had a "soft start" feature. I'd buy this saw again...

    This is an excellent idea. I’ve seen several types of router table inserts for table saws, but never seen one done this way. I love how it slides into one rail the sets on top of the other. Thank you for the video.

    Thanks! You inspired the same thing (well, except mine is a really cheap all wood version) for my R4510 contractor table saw -- "same thing but different" my Gramps used to say.

    Great way to utilize that part of the saw! I have the exact same saw and now I think I'll give it a go. I might install some drop down legs to support the router table but I'm not sure yet. Now I can free up space on my portable tool table! Thanks for the idea and video!

    Really cool set up, I am going to do similar with the fence spun 180 degrees since you will end of feeding the material from the back of the saw to the front. Thank you for the inspiration

    Have this same saw. Did a router insert..different design then yours. Attached an older model incra router fence to ridgid fence. Works awesome. Like your K.I.S.S designed fence. One suggestion....assuming you do 95% of your cutting with fence to right of the blade, flip your router fence to the other side of the table fence. Now you can keep it mounted most of the time, still maintain onboard measuring, and work off the end(rt side) of the table (better cutting posture instead of leaning across the whole table). Great build. Thanks for sharing.

    I have a brand new Skilsaw worm drive job site saw very similar to your saw and the Dewalt. I am considering doing an update just like you did for my saw. My saw fence is rack and pinion which I love, spot on accurate and it will expand to 30.6" to the right. So I have plenty of room for an insert. Nice job

    Got inspired by your build. I was hesitant because I didn't know how to attach the extension and bolt it on to the cast iron table without having a separate frame. I like your solution the best by press fitting the extension in the rail groove. I plan to do this on my Ridgid hybrid R4512. I like your fence too but I plan to use my 4" hose from my table saw and port through the bottom. Thanks!

    Thanks for sharing your design. I was inspired to make a similar style using12mm baltic birch project cutoffs. 12 mm fit into the fence guide extensions slots and from there i stacked to meet the table height. A laminate finish surface produced a perfect match to the saw table height. It locks in with one fixed tongue and the other end is a slotted sliding tongue wing nutted to secure into the fence guide extensions.
    The fence is a torsion box design the same height and width as the saw fence and secured to it with Rockler fence clamps a taller6” face attac

    Okay I just made the mod and have some numbers for you. The router base board is 23 3/* in L X 101/4 W in X 1 1/2 in thick./ The thickness comes from glueing two pieces of Melamine together and then cut to size. I would measure your opening on the saw bed just too make sure your's is the same. The Dado on one end was 1.123 in deep this was for the slot on the back side of the saw. I did not have to make a tongue, as the thickness of the insert just fit the slot. On the front side of the saw the dado was 1.058 inches deep. This lays on top of the rail so I just cut the dado to fit.
    I would suggest not cutting the dados as deep at first as I know there are some mods that were made to the saw over the years by Ridgid. I have an older model.
    I hope this helps

    Great idea! I have the same saw and I was thinking of making a separate router table but this would save space. Question: Why didn't you use the other side of the fence for the router? If I understand correctly, this way you have to lean over the saw blade to do routing work.

      The GoPro app for iPad, is what you can use to download videos directly from the camera to the iPad, but also has the capability to view the camera in real time while recording with the GoPro camera. The downside is that it's adhoc, so the wi-fi from the iPad cannot be connected to the internet, while also connected to the GoPro. I actually used imovie on the iPad to edit this video. It's limited, but easy for some quick editing, that I can work on while laying in bed or on the couch. Cool stuff!

    Awesome project! technically the router fence should be facing towards the right of saw. also you’d be able to use it without the saw in the way.
    as it is in there now i believe you’d have to feed backwards.

    • @patman0455
      @patman0455  6 років тому +1

      No! It's correct in relation to the router rotation. You want to feed the stock opposite the rotation so it doesn't want to "fly away" from you.

    How do you like the fence? I've thought about getting a DeWalt table saw due to its awesome fence system, but I'd have to pony up big money to get the model that handles dados. Also is the tape measure adjustable or is it true to the blade?

    • @patman0455
      @patman0455  7 років тому

      I think there is some small adjustment on the tape measure, but I
      haven't had to mess with it. My tape measure is definitely true to the
      blade, so it's not really functional with the fence. I was building a
      table this weekend and made lots of tongue and groove joints with this
      new fence. I really like it. It vacuums well, and I don't have any
      hangups. I'll post that video up relatively soon, as I need to finish
      the project, and edit the video. Probably in a few days.

  • @toobglued

    couple questions : what kind of weight/ stress do you think this is putting on the arms of the saw to support all the extra MDF, insert and router? Ive been tossing between the dewalt 7490, but seeing the rigid appears to have a nicer fence and mitre ga. . both are about 500. .. why did you choose the Rigid ? theres been comment the riding has a beautiful sliding ability for the fence and provisions for bolting items. the dewalt on the other hand does have the adjusting track knob.... hmm what to buy what to buy i want a toy

    • @patman0455
      @patman0455  7 років тому

      Fair question about the extra weight/stress, but I haven't seen any adverse effects yet. I'm a little biased about DeWalt products because I used to work in an industry where I saw drill after drill fail. They were all DeWalt branded, and it seems that the bearings would always fail. We switched to Makita and the problem was gone. DeWalt seems to be too proud of their pricing as well. If you compare the Ridgid brand to others, it seems you always get a little extra torq, a longer extension with light indicator, a nice bag, etc... for a cheaper price. I've come to like Ridgid tools, and haven't had any problems with failures either. And they also offer lifetime warranties.

  • @TheBeardedLibertarian
    @TheBeardedLibertarian 6 років тому +6

    I get that you want to feed your router in the same direction as you saw but the hole thing is backwards so very difficult to get good precision. I might add wear a mask when cutting mdf, that stuff is toxic.

    Would you be willing to share your router table dimensions? I'm most interested in how you got the router table to sit perfectly flush with the table saw deck. Also, you mentioned a template for JessEm lift. Where did you get that?

    • @patman0455
      @patman0455  7 років тому +1

      The router table insert was done very carefully with multiple passes on a Dado blade. I carefully shaved off a little bit at a time until I got it to sit flush. The template for the router insert came from WoodCraft store. They had it in stock for basically making a homemade router table. It was about $15 (kinda expensive, for a piece of MDF).

      Actually... Not shown in the video, I used almost an entire bottle of model grade CA (aka super glue), on that tenon and anywhere else particle wood is exposed. It's as hard as nails. Still going strong, and not a single chip.

    • @FoScoJo
      @FoScoJo 5 років тому

      @@patman0455 Did you just happen to have that melamine already? Just curious why you didn't go with plywood or even MDF then contact cement laminate to it.

    • @patman0455
      @patman0455  5 років тому +2

      @@FoScoJo I had the melamine already. I used to make speaker stereo boxes with mirrors and plexi-glass and such. Since MDF is the desired material (because of density vs. sound), this melamine has saved me quite a bit of work from having to cover and cut everything manually (gluing, etc...). Just for the sake of curiosity, I was just messing around and it worked out well.
      The other reason why I didn't put the router fence on the other side (as others have pointed out), was because I thought it might be too much strain on the rails while working. It's kind of heavy, and I don't want to bend those rails. I had to make a compromise. It feeds the correct direction while facing the saw, so I'm good.
