I distinctly remember commenting on this video when I was 14 years old and saying "this reminds me of something from the juno soundtrack" i loved this song so much at that point in my life when i was discovering punk rock for the first time and beginning to form my identity. I remember being really disheartened at all the hate i got for that one fairly innocent comment. what i remember even more than being disheartened though, is the one person who came to my defense in the comments section to say that there was nothing wrong likening AJJ to the music of the Kimya Dawson and the juno soundtrack as whole. I remember them highlighting the fact that good music is good music and it doesn't matter what your entry point is. They may not have realized how young I was at the time but now as a 23 year old I can say that their positivity has deeply affected me and the way i think about music, music culture and the elitism that plagues it. thank you kind stranger for your words of wisdom to a young teenager, for helping me to be a more appreciative and humble adult.
All of you kids are ridiculous. I love Andrew Jackson Jihad. I like how simple it is. I like that his voice isn't at all conventional. I like the simplicity of the lyrics and I like that, despite this simplicity, I can always get a sense of emotion and passion out of their songs. I can feel their hope, cynicism, bitterness, happiness, apathy, and conviction. There's something raw to it all. If you can can listen with an honest and open mind, I think anyone could see and appreciate these things.
You know, people give AJJ a lot of flak for being "simple" and "easy", but fuck if I've been having a dick of a hard time matching Sean's right hand when playing along to these songs.
I was 17 when I discovered AJJ. I saw them when they rolled through Regina, SK. I'm 27 now in Toronto as a radio producer but I'll never lose sight of that angry, depressed teen who felt lost and disconnected from the world. I never thought I'd get out. Yet here I am. Still battling depression from time to time and my anxiety has worsened, but I'm so grateful to have this music see me grow up. I'll never stop growing up. Thanks AJJ. Hope to see you again sometime soon.
Just met Sean at his show in Baltimore. Damn, what a cool guy. Super down to earth, really laid back, and just too damn modest. He should have been at least cocky after being such good music. Shit you not, he seemed completely surprised when I told him how much I love his music. Just a great dude, writing great music.
I just saw them live on Saturday and i was so happy when they did this song. They also got back on stage after Big Bird and did Brave as a Noun, it was so awesome.
it is so surreal watching videos like this 11 or more years old... posted back when I was an 11 year old. and then watching Sean's quarantine videos everyday in 2020
This is the sound I like. a Quirky voice, some acoustic instruments and a catchy tune. I like the fuzzy stuff, too, but this type of sound has a spot in my nostalgia bank.
I adore AJJ. I love how their songs seem to embody the totality of human experience; the beauty and the ugliness both that we find in this existence. They're just so fucking honest it makes me want to cry.
I live on guam, but once lived in alabama where i met an amazing girl named ashleigh. she fulfilled all my needs and i didn't take advantage of the opportunity i had at the time. i had to leave for a year for my junior year of highschool. I got to visit alabama this summer and decided to make her my girlfriend, but i now have to leave again to begin school and graduate, after which i will go to college. and ashleigh, wherever you'll be in a year i hope we meet up with eachother on the tracks.
Of all their songs, this specific line has always been my favorite, whether because it resonates with me or because its just great fucking poetry -> "Sense and sensibility and peaceful productivity, a pretty girl with broken wings is all that I desire. But there's so much hostility in all the things surrounding me, the awful flow of enmity is trying to stop my shine."
You just do it with a little more force. It's like you're flicking the strings as you strum. If you watch what Sean is doing, he's dragging all his fingers using his index to create a bigger sound. It's really easy, man. Just practice.
I saw AJJ(Sean not Ben) in AUstin a few weeks ago. Sean is such a nice freakin' guy. My friends and I are street cats here in Austin and Sean talked to the door guy for us. It was such an amazing show. This is by far one of my favorite bands.
copscantdance, when a band produces lyrics that truly summarize the disillusionment and truth in society that so many of us are feeling they are bound to pick up popular steam... i empathize with your thoughts on them becoming more popular, it just always seems to take something away something from those that have been with them since the beginning but.... we NEED more bands like this to gain ground AGAINST the mainstream CRAP forced on us thru radio and tv.
earnesty and clarity those wonderful mentalities of decent positivity are all that we can strive but misery and poverty they follow me and my family and though it seems that i cant win i think i have to try
@Naota391 i don't think that until i draw my last breath on this earth i will ever agree with anything a stranger has said more than i agree with this. these guys have helped me through so much shit because they don't try to be fancy and flashy, they say exactly what they want to say without metaphors, play the same 4 chords over and over again and make the most beautiful passionate music ever.
Thanks for reminding me why I don't read youtube comments. Enjoy your arbitrary labels and such, and weaveflytyer, I echo your sentiment. Damned good strummin.
woah not pissed at all man just trying to put you on to my favorite genre of music, thought you might like to find more bands that similarly to your taste
@Anneemalls Your comment is a fine example of what people should be doing on youtube. Congratulations, you have figured out everything there is to know about life. Rock on.
i don't think AJJ would like us sittin around trying to classify what kind of folk music they belong to. but none the less, this song is fuckin awesome
yes I do. the name sounds like a bands name but it is a one man project that samples sounds of me playing different instruments and singing. it is one of my many solo projects.

Steven Dodge that's hilarious that you got shit for likening AJJ to Kimya Dawson and now they're touring together!
lol was thinking the same thing! just caught them both at the glass house the show was badass!!!
moldy peaches are on the juno soundtrack, no?
Hey Kimya Dawson is punk as fuck
@@stephanieallard9085 I like her stuff with Aesop Rock. :)
thats a big violin!
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Now that you mention it it really is
Baritone violin

Sean's guitar is giving me that look.
Sometimes I wish I could stop being a person and just exist as the vibrations in Sean's guitar. Fuck.
Sarah Sayers shut up
I feel the same
this is 7 years old but this sentence is punk as fuck
seans hair makes me happy omg

Better than the studio version. This is an excellent performance of an excellent song.
It is November 6th, 2024. AJJ is helping get me through this nightmare so much
You're not alone
I remember finding this at 14, still one of my favorite bands :)
You'd probably like Grimmy Noah Kirschenmann
im gay
You know, people give AJJ a lot of flak for being "simple" and "easy", but fuck if I've been having a dick of a hard time matching Sean's right hand when playing along to these songs.
Strum patterns can be the real butthole, best example I can give is poor black Mattie by R L Burnside, simple but brutally hard
my favorite love this song forever

CheckmateWithPawn the purest man to ever exist.
Discovered them when I was about 11 or 12 and I'm turning 20 in a week or so, they never get old do they.
Cool story. I discovered them when I was almost 19, and that's the same year this video was published.
11 years later still a jam
What an amazing choice of words

i think this guy could sing the yellow pages and still make me cry.
he's such a cutie

I love AJJ because their music is 100% real. They don't need a studio to sound great, it's just all there. And it's so great.
Is there anyone purer than sean bonette
Does this remind anyone else of Bear Necessities from The Jungle Book for some reason?
I’ll never hear this song the same
Your right
Dillman502 I’m four years late, but whoa dude. Mind blown
@milkshake0 Is this the origin of the "Always has been" meme?
.
don't you love it when songs perfectly describe your feelings and your life

Live from my mother's couch, it's Andrew Jackson Jihad!
These guys are the greatest people I have ever listened to in my life. I want to meet them..
If you do nothing else in life, see these guys live.
Been listening to this many times a day all week. Can't stop. Too beautiful.
My dream is to tour with this band.

"pink couch sessions" sounds like a series of pornos.
I mean I jerked off to this video like porn... isn't that what it's here for

Saw Sean solo in iowa city last night. Sean is the nicest dude ever.
There's no way Ben isn't high in this video.
this is great!
That sound with what looks like no pick, my fucking hero
I highly suspect that my hand would be torn to shreds if I attempted that.
I learned to play like this... just lost so many picks I gave up. So much more control. You kind of use your finger nails and thumb.
Much respect for you then sir, because it sounds awesome.
amasse1 Same as me, it's easy peasy. Although painting my nails to this day is completely pointless because of it.
You just do it with a little more force. It's like you're flicking the strings as you strum. If you watch what Sean is doing, he's dragging all his fingers using his index to create a bigger sound. It's really easy, man. Just practice.
beautiful voice. beautiful lyrics. beautiful.
when he says "you'll go your way & i'll go mine"... my heart winces...
This video is really important and should be in like the library of congress.
I like how this song is great. Also, it's fantastic. I appreciate it being none bad.
Lol that ending, so awkward xD love them

They call it a stand up bass for a reason. you rebel.
this is soo god.
I wish I found this earlier like the rest of you. Though I guess someday I’ll be down here commenting about how I found this so long ago at 17.
earnesty and clarity
those wonderful mentalities
of decent positivity
are all that we can strive
but misery and poverty
they follow me and my family
and though it seems that i cant win
i think i have to try
are we not going to talk about how awesome the double bass + guitar sound is?
Ajj goes hard anytime of year
i love these guys
This song reminds me of my best friend
Beautiful man beautiful
IM NOT THE ONLY ONE WHO PREFERS PLAYING WITHOUT A PICK!! YAAAAAASS
i'd rather not play with one. i only use it for electric or if im trying that hard sound.
i'm with you. fuck picks!
I love playing without picks but my bleeding hands say otherwise.
Fuck the picks, get the chicks! (I know, that was sad xD)
never liked playing with a pick
i love his T-shirt.
Seeing them with a full band April 20th, so fucking stoked
Niice. A burn with a great song lyric :)
Holy fuck sean can write a song
Thanks for reminding me why I don't read youtube comments.
Enjoy your arbitrary labels and such, and weaveflytyer, I echo your sentiment. Damned good strummin.
Last time I saw him I had him show me how he does it. That was 3 years ago and I've almost got it down :)
Every member of this band reminds me of my dad if he was cool and made badass music
sean sounds like a sad angel
Wow! This is really cool!
ive been wondering that for years
He strums like a banjo frailer. Hes just fuck great at it
Best song
woah not pissed at all man just trying to put you on to my favorite genre of music, thought you might like to find more bands that similarly to your taste

that was my steam avatar over a year ago, and I've never seen it anywhere, now this.
