brent bought the mine before it burnt down im sure he knows how it looks like at least he has old blue prints but its nice for us that we can see how it looked before
I was thinking the same thing !It was really cool to go back and see how it was before . I just came across this episode. I was watching Wonder H before Brent started up his channel . She should go back up and do another with Brent !
I was just going to leave a comment saying the exact thing! I loved seeing the Americana Hotel in all its glory. So much was lost, so it's no wonder how Brent was so heartbroken!
I'm so glad that WH did this video. I've never been up there. All the wiring should have been replaced in these old buildings. I lost one of my old trailers due to old wiring.
This place was constantly occupied by at least a caretaker. There never was a problem before. In one video, the guy who lives there talked about a "ghost" in the old bunkhouse. He showed how he put a padlock on the door and still saw lights on inside the building. What he didn't talk about is the fact there was more than one entrance Not to mention, could the windows be opened? In an old building like that, the likely answer is yes. There could have been someone squatting on the premises in more than one building, so it may or may not have been wiring. Investigators tend to go with the path of least resistance, which in this case would be to blame the wiring.
I just finished binge watching all of Brent's videos in chronological order! It's funny because while I was watching them, I did remember that you had been up here and I had seen this video, I just did not remember it was in 2017, way before Brent's time! Wow! You definitely need to do a Cerro Gordo pt.2 Sarah!
Thanks for the video on Cerro Gordo. Years ago I rode a motorcycle through. Met Jody. She showed us around her house and the hotel. She spoke fondly of her plans to restore the town. She wanted to have room for business conferences and a Bed and Breakfast. She did mention the special hydrolic water pump used to bring water up from the deep levels of the mine. Amazingly wonderful and instantly friendly woman.
WH, loved it. You just keep getting better. As an old desert rat I say, you bring life to the desert by bringing the story of the life of the desert to people. Best part of this video was learning about the ghostess of the town. What a woman, I am going to have to learn more about her. When I used to drive through the desert with people who did not live there, they would say that they saw no life and it was barren. I would tell them that there was life all around, it just moved slower and was less flashy. Sometimes I would tell them how to find water in the desert, just follow the life. To see the desert life one needs to slow down their own speed and pay attention. I think you know that. The desert calms my soul. It moves slow but with intent. You see the desert and respect it's life. I like that about you. How do people find life on the fringe? Desert people seek to be themselves, they seek separation to achieve self awareness and purification in a manner. I think the mountain men were the same way, just different environments. Desert rats don't fear solitary confinement, they fear the confinement of conformity. The desert is where you go to be you for only the strong of mind can survive it. I have travelled these deserts longer than you have been alive. Lots of great stories and feelings. I also know where not to go. If you are driving 50 miles on a dirt road from one highway to another and you see a compound with barb wire or watch posts, don't go there. The desert can spring artists (Georgia O'Keefe) or maniacs (Manson). Old fatherly type guy says, always wear you hiking shoes and always bring that electric walking stick. Be a good boy scout, young lady and always be prepared. I want to keep seeing your videos. Never take the desert for granted. If I drive from LA to Vegas I keep a couple of gallons of water in my car. Not for me, for others. You know the desert, maybe you could tell people who don't how to prepare to be in it. I won't camp with newbies anymore; but, I would camp with you. You get the desert, many don't and make bad mistakes. I am gonna shut up now, thanks for the video and get ready for having more viewers because you will.
If anyone says you talk to much wonderhussy they can go elsewhere.Your the real deal. The way you get excited and give us info on these awesome locations is what keeps me and others coming back. You fucking rock.
The poor dude? It's a business for him, he bought it for $1.4 million with his business partner to turn it into a kind of an authentic theme park. His UA-cam channel where he presents himself as a lone adventurer is a marketing ploy. Look it up on CNBC.
I bet he burned the building down himself to collect insurance. Bought it for $1.4 million, but didn't check and replace old wiring, and then just throws in more money to rebuild the whole thing? Come on.
Used to do a lot of seasonal construction work in the Bishop/Mammoth area and on the way home one day, a co- worker and I decided to check out the fat hill unannounced. Upon arrival we were met by Jody with a shotgun in her arms and a stern look in her eyes...LOL But After sizing us up and determining we were harmless, she then proceeded to give us an awesome tour of the place. She said if Mike was around he would have taken us for a ride down into the mine if we had wanted...Dayum! Opportunity missed. Real nice folks and kudos to them for preserving this priceless piece of history.
Brent Underwood is the owner of Cerro Gordo ! He made a lot of good friends out of that part of the country. ! He started with the bunk house out the back and restored that ! When he started work on the Hotel he had a friend that was a trucker come earth works dude ,whom brought all this earth moving equipment up on the gnarley road and probably improved it too ! He has done a hell of a lot of good work there ! He said there was an old guy that lived down the road that he had to keep in good with in preserving the town - that is probably the caretaker ! Just goes to show that not all youngsters are out to graffiti and mess up old areas of history !
I am so glad I got to see your video about Cerro Gordo. I did see it before I started watching Bret's videos. I am glad that I got to see the original American Hotel, it was classic.
As soon as you walked into the hotel I saw the name Mike Patterson and went into research mode. Found out that he and his wife, Jody, were major players up there in Cerro Gordo. Mike died before the chapel was finished and volunteers and friends finished it in his honor. It must of been heartbreaking to have survived his wife by 8 years. Jody in ‘01 and Mike in ‘09. Wish you showed that stove in the bar in more detail. Guess we should give out a big holler to the new shot caller, Brent Underwood!
Love that you have taken so much time in filming the hotel since it burned down last year. You should let Brent Underwood know you have so much footage of the hotel. It could come in handy with the rebuild.
I am subscribed to the UA-cam channel "Ghost Town Living" by the bloke who used his life savings to buy Cerro Gordo. He was in tears when the American Hotel burned down & is trying to raise money to rebuild it. The painting of the woman in the hotel bar was once naked & hung in a Nevada brothel. Billy Crapo's home, next door to the hotel , from where he killed Henry Boland & wounded his brother Thomas. This was 60 feet from Crapo's house and not in the hotel playing cards. Crapo escaped & was never seen again so the $500 reward never claimed.
I’m glad you filmed this hotel……as you probably know it completely burnt down and Brent is trying to get it rebuilt now. But just a note, you saved a beautiful piece of the past with this video. ❤️❤️❤️
This is a really sweet video. Thank you, nice to see some beautiful shots of the hotel showing its true beauty. Im sure Brent will do a fab job making it alive again
I love old history. The reason why old photo subjects had expressionless faces is because it looked respectful. A smile or grin was seen as not 'dealing with a full deck'. That's what I always understood. Folks though differently back then. (13:46). Good cam work and narration here.
Awesome video,We really appreciate you taking us to these awesome spots,Thank you again for taking the time to make these videos,I absolutely love them,Stay safe
Ah, man seeing the American Hotel before Brent purchased it and it burned down is priceless. He will rebuild and you had no clue what a treasure this vlog would become in 2020 and over the rebuilding in 2021. So many treasures were there. The wall paper was so nice. I have enjoyed finding this today.
What an amazing site--thanks for sharing! Oh, BTW. You don't "talk too much", and I appreciate everything you do to make your art. Can't wait for the next adventures in the Inyo.
I can't believe you made it up that grade. I can't believe WE made it up that grade. When I researched prior to our trip, one of the things I came across was "You'll know you're almost there because the road gets quite steep." I must of said "Oh my god. We must be almost there..." At least 10 times. My biggest regret was only spending a day there. So many amazing memories. Thank you for the video. I left a piece of my heart up there and it was really nice to visit it.
I found this old video takes to UA-cam after watching a recent video from the man who bought the town and is currently living there by himself and fixing things up. Would love to make up there one of these days.
Another amazing video! You treat us to wonderfully quirky and off the beaten path places, sharing your enthusiasm for the history and characters in a way that makes most, if not all of your viewers look forward to your / our next adventure! Thank you!!
Ghost Adventures just filmed an episode at Cerro Gordo. The Poker Room is haunted by a man named Alphonse Benoit who was shot and killed while playing poker. You saw the bullet hole and his blood stains there. The mine is haunted by as it was the sight of a cave in that supposedly killed 35 Chinese miners and the Balfor House is also haunted by 2 children who died there. You can view the episode on the Travel Channel or UA-cam. I was stationed at Edwards AFB in the early 1980s and my friends and I used to go exploring where ever we could. We found many abandoned homesteads, aircraft and other interesting sights. Love your videos and know the hard work and effort you go through to make them possible. Maybe one day you can make it here to Saudi Arabia and I can take you out to explore the various sights here.
Thank you for your tireless efforts to keep history and the past alive, and not forgotten. From your newest fans at Royal Nostalgia America and Royal Entertainment America! We adore you!
the way you tilt your glasses and smile just makes me "HAPPY" and thank you ... I'm a long time subscriber and always share your Videos with friends and family and on my social media as well .. be safe and stay happy .. "My Lady"
Went to Cerro Gordo in 1974/75 with my then brother in law. From what I learned there was also a house of ill repute somewhere up there. I you go down the back road, there are, or at least, were some really cool old cabins with mine shafts in the floor so people could guard them to keep poachers away from their claims. Loved seeing your videos on places that we used to haunt when we were younger. Still have a Jeep and still go for the hard to find things, thanks.
7 23 2023. This video is a goldmine for the gold town I hope this gets to Brad because he needs it in his Video Collection. I was lucky to be able to have saved it and I have shared it and I hope it gets the brat who is the caretaker of the town. Thank you darling wonderhussy you are the best. I enjoy your videos so much and I hope everybody else gets to enjoy them too
Over here doing a bit of binge watching from your recent Sierra Big melt video. Your Keeler video led me here. Super awesome that you captured the motel before it burned down. I LOVE the "older vibe" feeling from these older vids of yours. The music you used is CLASSIC! LOL
I have watched this video before, I love the way you narrate and keep us your audience captivated with the story, love to explorer with you. Thank you so much for making these videos. You do a great job with the camera as well as pulling everything together to make a great video. You know what you are doing and it shows in all of your videos, this is why I watch most of them more than once, I enjoy them so much. Take care and be safe before anything.
My heart breaks watching this knowing the old hotel burned down. All those treasures lost 😢 You should so go back & share this with Brent for historical value to aid him in his rebuilding of the hotel. My grandpa passed 2 months to the day after my grandma. The last set of twins born in my family resulted in the loss of one twin shortly after birth...the other twin was quite healthy yet passed 6 months later due to a broken heart. Broken heartstrings are very deadly.... I bet he would never have wanted to live in that ghost town without his other half, he would have been miserable.
Makes me sad to see what was lost in the fire. How it stood in near perfect condition for so many decades and for unknown reasons it just up and burned itself down. Really sad loss.
Thank you for recording that town, so Cool to think it still exists almost like that used to be in the old days. Wonder filled bet there's a LOT more to see.
Good job for talking to the caretaker before exploring this town. More people need to follow your example. A lot more. This video is valuable now because it is the before video for stuff that is now burnt down.
Sarah the town was soooo cool. The place had such character with the beautiful wallpaper, chandeliers, and luv the stoves. With your cheerful personality made it perfect. Thank u for bringing us along on your adventure!🤠
Thanks again Wondering Wonder Hussy, I love the Eastern side of the Sierras, so much history and not spooled to bad yet. I hope you will go on to Bodie and Aurora one of these days.
very kool! we went to "keeler" down below, didn`t have time to go up, so thanks much for the tour and we will explore "cerro gordo" in the future.. ...happy trails....
@chris younts Unfortunately the people who bought it don't seem to be very bright. They want to turn it into a tourist attraction but I don't see it ever being profitable enough to recoup their investment. $1.4 million is a lot for a bunch of buildings that all need restoring, plus the cost of said restoring.
@chris younts I never meant to imply they had bad intent. I just don't think they're being realistic about return revenue on their investment. It sounded to me like they were still seeking investors for the project. Investors generally aren't so much interested in preserving history as they are getting a return on their $$. Your plan for the AFB sounds like a good one. Too bad you didn't get to do it. Leave it to the government to spend money tearing down what could have been affordable housing for people.
What a cool place...thanks for the tour. The history of the blonde caretaker was fascinating. The cast iron stove was amazing. I have never seen one that big. Looked like it had two ovens.
Thank you for the video , I have been up there but it was many many years ago it was really cool to see how they are caring for the old town . I guess its time to load the truck and head up there again and see the place and make a donation to the fine folks keeping that place up.
Sarah, There was an ore tram from the mine just above the town that went down to the ore bin you past lower down the mountain on the way up. There is one of the ore buckets in front of the hotel. Great video, it's so rare to have such an intact ghost town that's not vandalized. Please more singing.
Absolutely beautiful spot. Hell, I'd move into that Hotel just as it is. Everything is in such amazing shape. Thank you as always for sharing. Love your content,C-Ya!,,,,,Peace!
It's a good thing she did this video since the hotel and antique store burned down in June 2020. I was watching a video about the fire and was curious to see what it used to look like. Should have known I would find a Wonderhussy video about it.
I actually stayed in that bunk house with a group of coworkers back sometime before 2003 and it was very nice. Hopefully they will be able to open it for lodging again soon. There was also still a bucket dangling high in the air from the salt tram if you knew where to look during the drive up. Great to see Cerro Gordo again. Thanks!
People didnt smile in pictures in the old days. The picture exposure time was long sometimes and tthe people were required to stay very still the whole time, thats why they didnt smile. Hard to hold a steady smile that long.
I'm glad you shared this video of the hotel - what a beautiful building it was. Interesting how they just put wiring in exposed like that but that was long before electrical code and was the downfall of the property. I hope they're able to rebuild it as he wishes to.
Very neat town. Love the artifacts they have. Wouldn't mind having some. Looks like fun to explore. When I was in New Mexico a few years ago, I went to a number of ghost towns, some had residents living there. Not ghosts. Most were south of Santa Fe.
I sure Bret will be supper pleased you filmed so much of the hotel's interiors for when they rebuild they have images to work with.
brent bought the mine before it burnt down im sure he knows how it looks like at least he has old blue prints but its nice for us that we can see how it looked before
Too bad she couldn't record the upstairs.
Definitely.

@@TheCiaMKultra I think we all want this, c'mon Sarah aka Wonderhussy go and visit Brent in Cerro Gordo!

There is a channel on youtube, talking about this town, and the trial and tribulations of owning this place, and restoring!
little did we know that someone was going to buy this place, and the original wiring would eventually take this amazing building. What a shame.
I'm so glad that WH did this video. I've never been up there. All the wiring should have been replaced in these old buildings. I lost one of my old trailers due to old wiring.

The desert calms my soul. It moves slow but with intent. You see the desert and respect it's life. I like that about you. How do people find life on the fringe?
Love All the Pretty Things! Great Stuff
Hi! Very Beautiful, Love The Motel And The Property! Amazing
I think this is my favorite so far. Love these quaint little ghost towns, especially those that haven't been ruined by vandals
+Sean yes, it's so rare to see a restored one!
Just heard the hotel and several other buildings burnt down today. Very sad. Watching your video again. Glad you went do we can see.
Thank you for recording that town, so Cool to think it still exists almost like that used to be in the old days. Wonder filled bet there's a LOT more to see.
Been there several times. Different people and caretakers give different tours. Always interesting
Good job for talking to the caretaker before exploring this town. More people need to follow your example. A lot more.
This video is valuable now because it is the before video for stuff that is now burnt down.
What a neat place. Thanks for sharing.
I love this video
I have been following Brent since the Hotel burnt down
it is nice to see what it was
Thank you for this video
Great video on the historical mine. Will try to check this out sometime when I retire (Lol). Keep up the terrific work. Very inspiring.
+Mark Taniguchi thank you! Glad you're enjoying
So much detail in your video, When the hotel is rebuilt.,videos like this sure would help to get it back to its former glory
Sarah the town was soooo cool. The place had such character with the beautiful wallpaper, chandeliers, and luv the stoves. With your cheerful personality made it perfect. Thank u for bringing us along on your adventure!🤠
+Lexi Stapleton no problem!
Thanks. Love the video before hotel was gone. Saved history. God bless America
Another great video! Thanks . Just an hour north of my place, never been there ...yet.. that will change soon after your video! thanks, :-)
i am so grateful that you made this video so that we have more records of the way the inside of the american hotel looked. thank you for this tour.
Thanks again Wondering Wonder Hussy, I love the Eastern side of the Sierras, so much history and not spooled to bad yet. I hope you will go on to Bodie and Aurora one of these days.
By far the best video Ever! I love how well preserved this hotel is. I was definitely born in the wrong century. As always, Thank you.
Sadly the Hotel burned down 6/20 but is being rebuilt
@@chrischrispypiceynskicritt3164 😔
very kool! we went to "keeler" down below, didn`t have time to go up, so thanks much for the tour and we will explore "cerro gordo" in the future.. ...happy trails....
You certainly get about to some wonderful places love your videos 😊
I looked up the name signed on that hat. I believe it could have been the award winning actor Roger Robinson. He died in 2018 at the age of 78.
Great footage of the American hotel . When I went summer of 2021 it was being rebuilt .
I've been in bars where ringing the bell meant you were buying drinks for the house'
+Richard Brooks uhoh!!!!!
I thought the same thing.
@chris younts I saw that also. It makes here video of the hotel even more special.
+gary cooper yeah. .it was massive!!
Wonderhussy, I love what you do because it's just like what I would do at those remote old structures. Thanks for taking us out there!
+Roycroft Jones right on!! so glad you are enjoying
Thank you for the video , I have been up there but it was many many years ago it was really cool to see how they are caring for the old town . I guess its time to load the truck and head up there again and see the place and make a donation to the fine folks keeping that place up.
+Thomas Morehouse yes!! they are wonderful people!
Sarah, There was an ore tram from the mine just above the town that went down to the ore bin you past lower down the mountain on the way up. There is one of the ore buckets in front of the hotel. Great video, it's so rare to have such an intact ghost town that's not vandalized. Please more singing.
+Dan DeVoto thank you Dan!
Wow another great video always enjoy , be safe and have fun !
My favorite vid so far. Great image quality and audio. New camera? Your joy of discovery and exuberance is infectious!
+Reinhard Brodesser it was my cell phone! Samsung galaxy s7... great camera
Impressive!
Absolutely beautiful spot. Hell, I'd move into that Hotel just as it is. Everything is in such amazing shape. Thank you as always for sharing. Love your content,C-Ya!,,,,,Peace!
+GnatMan Allin it was one of the most beautiful old buildings I've ever been to!
Loving your explores, at least this one was saved for history and awesome to see it looked after.
+David Hawking it was wonderful!
Came across your channel a little while ago, so going over the ones l missed. This is my favorite by far. Thank you for sharing... 😁
+JAKKI CLIFFORD very cool! Glad you are enjoying, thanks for taking the time to comment :-)
Thanks!
Amazing! Thanks for sharing! 👍👍
People didnt smile in pictures in the old days. The picture exposure time was long sometimes and tthe people were required to stay very still the whole time, thats why they didnt smile. Hard to hold a steady smile that long.
Pomona Dawgpound and they took pics with their dead loved ones. Which is weird to me
+Daniel Fultz I love those creepy old photos!
+Ripp Snortin' yeah like showing off, I guess
I thought they were just mad because their clothes are always getting dirty and everything was in grey or brown or yellow...
neosomato hypergenesis...me too!
Very nice video, I have recently been watching the Ghost town living videos. Would love to visit there myself
What a beautifully preserved place. - - If you ring the bell, you buy the house a round! Holy Cannolli almost! - - Another great vid.
+NYC2NV uhoh!!! Good thing there was no one else around
Lucky you! "He who rings the bell in jest, buys a drink for all the rest."
You need to revisit this place and yes Bret, awesome guy.
That was a really great tour, America is such a cool place. Such a shame that the hotel and a few other buildings burned down recently
Yes. That was my kind of place. Thanks again for another great vid.
That was great fun,W.H.! Many thanks I'll have to add it to my "Ride list":) Cheers;)
Caretaker snowed in at an old hotel. Reminds me of The Shining.
