  • with Maurice Murphy and Nigel Gomm.
Two legends of the LSO's trumpet section, now both sadly no longer with us. Former Principal Trumpet Maurice Murphy died in 2010 and Nigel Gomm in 2011, and they are hugely missed by everyone who worked with them.
We hope you enjoy this little insight into Maurice and Nigel's trumpet playing and relationship with each other, which stretched back beyond their days together in the Orchestra.
This video was recorded for the purposes of the UA-cam Symphony Orchestra 2008, a project which brought together amateur musicians around the world. Nigel and Maurice are looking at sections of the trumpet part for Tun Dun's 'Internet Symphony' which players recorded themselves performing as an audition, before the winners were brought together to form an orchestra in New York.

Maurice Murphy has been my trumpet hero for 33 years, ever since I first heard him on Star Wars. I was so very sad to hear of his death a few days back. Thanks for inspiring so many of us for so long. RIP, Maurice.

Just found this, two wonderful players who were also very special guys. As a wedding present, Maurice & four other LSO friends played at my wedding. As I walked up the aisle, Maurice unexpectedly started to play when the organist struck up the Purcell. He also played the Adagio from Albinoni's Oboe Concerto on his piccolo trumpet whiile we signed the register. Ethereal and so beautiful. Just loved that man.

He was a good friend of my family and sadly passed very soon after his sister Eileen. He was a legend and we will never forget him. He even managed to get John Williams to sign a copy of his Star Wars pieces for us.

So many millions of admirers around the world have listened to MMs wonderful playing through his musicianship on many film scores.Because of that he is probably, next to a certain Mr Armstrong, the most listened to trumpet player ever to raise a horn to his lips.

I've only been learning to play the trumpet 🎺 for four years, but every now and then I come back to this video, and it starts to make more sense to me, eg. phrasing, playing like you're singing, judging the dynamics etc.

Hearing Maurice play in this video when It came out help make me want to be a better trumpet player.
Probably one of the first great trumpet players I ever heard through various John Williams scores like Superman and Star Wars. Very honest approach and a very natural player.
    R.I.P.

The LSO is deeply saddened by the recent death of LSO Trumpeter, Nigel Gomm, on Sunday 30 October at the age of 52 after a short illness.
Our thoughts are with his wife Belinda McFarlane, an LSO Violinist, his beloved children Jamie and Charli and his close family; he will be greatly missed by the whole Orchestra.

@mac112man @awreckingball calm down chaps. Nigel appears in the video alongside Maurice in a sort of interview situation, Maurice not feeling comfortable enough to appear on his own - he always said he wasn't a natural teacher! At the time of this video Maurice had already retired, but Nigel and Maurice were colleagues & close friends for more years than we could care to mention. Sadly Maurice died in October last year. He is greatly missed by everyone at the LSO and by people around the world.

Somewhere out there in the ether there is a recording of MM playing the 3rd mvt of the Hummel concerto with the LSO under Vilem Tausky. Just an observation. It's disturbing to observe how many really top line trumpeters don't live to see old age.
