Unfortunately, this grand Sun Temple (as majestic as Pyramids of Giza or Acropolis of Athens) was demolished by Sultan Sikander Butshikan of Kashmir in 14th century. One needs to visit this temple to see its commanding location.As per Kalhana's Rajatarangini, entire Lidder Valley and the Shikhara of another grand temple ( that also faced demolition ) known as Vijeyshwara was visible from this temple. The ruins of the temple are located on a plateau just 2 km up from Mattan town in Anantnag .The temple was destroyed by burning trees obtained from the adjoining forest. The fire kept burning for many months.

It's such a great feeling to witness the beauty of Marthand temple in the form of CGI. I can only imagine how spellbinding and beautiful it would have been to witness such a magnificent architecture in real life. Like Kashi, Char dham, Somnath and Ujjain Mahakaal it's time to revive this temple and rebuild it back to its glory. @nimitta do you have any future projects that are on the works?

For the last one year I have been searching the ruins of it on google images and watching those with a heavy heart, even though i am not a kashmiri pa dit.My gotra is kashyapa though. Revival of this is essential.

At Social Buzz, as a team we were working on creating a buzz for a book that was titled 'Kayastha: An encyclopedia of untold stories'. During the project, we learnt about the legacy of 8th century warrior king Lalitaditya Muktapid and how he spread his kingdom from Bengal to Turkey in the face of external aggression. During his stint, he built the Martand Sun temple and the beautiful city of Parihaspora in the Anantnag area of kashmir. However, his descendents ruled after him but ruled without affection towards his legacy and today Parihaspora and the sun temple lie in ruins! Thank you for sharing this animation documentary to a wider audience.
What a MAGNIFICENT temple this must have been! Heart bleeds at the thought of what was done to it, and the state it is in today.

This temple is unique in terms of architecture compare to the temples in rest of India
It is Kashmiri and shared by other temples of the region. Pandrethan (?) is a smaller example. Shakti peeth in the Neelum valley.
