Unfortunately, this grand Sun Temple (as majestic as Pyramids of Giza or Acropolis of Athens) was demolished by Sultan Sikander Butshikan of Kashmir in 14th century. One needs to visit this temple to see its commanding location.As per Kalhana's Rajatarangini, entire Lidder Valley and the Shikhara of another grand temple ( that also faced demolition ) known as Vijeyshwara was visible from this temple. The ruins of the temple are located on a plateau just 2 km up from Mattan town in Anantnag .The temple was destroyed by burning trees obtained from the adjoining forest. The fire kept burning for many months.

I can only imagine how spellbinding and beautiful it would have been to witness such a magnificent architecture in real life. I witnessed those remains of gigantic Temple left over, with broken heart during my visit in August, 1989

This temple is unique in terms of architecture compare to the temples in rest of India
It is Kashmiri and shared by other temples of the region. Pandrethan (?) is a smaller example. Shakti peeth in the Neelum valley.
