  • Person-First Language or Identity-First Language. This debate has been going on for quite some time now. When we search the web, one can read things like "Person-First language is a safe bet". I have personally met professionals working with dyslexic kids that recommend Person-First language. However, I have also encountered numerous affected individuals who prefer Identity-First Language. The blind, Deaf, and autistic communities seem to strongly favor identity-First Language. And in a pole of my viewers, of which most are likely dyslexics, 73% prefer the Person-First Language as well (100 Viewers took part in the poll). How do you feel about this issue?

I became disabled in my early twenties, and at first I used person-first language to describe myself. As the years went on, I grew to use identity-first language. I think it's because as I grew more comfortable with my disability, I felt like it became more integrated with my sense of self. I feel so much more whole and less "broken" now that I use identity-first language. I've had able-bodied people try to correct me on this, which is super frustrating because it feels like they're trying to question my sense of self and my experience of the world. Thank you for this video!

V good short and to anyone still second guessing, an educator should not get to control how you identify, you should. Use whatever is comfortable for you if you are neurodivergent and live and let live. Saying you have autism won't hurt autistics and saying you're autistic won't hurt autistics but trying to enforce how you feel comfortable on others, that impacts real people, especially if you don't have the condition

I'm both autistic and a person with autism. I honestly don't understand why people think they mean different things. The meanings people often infer from each way of speaking seems to me to be a distinctly neurotypical way of thinking 😅

I think I tend to use identity-first language, but it's not really a conscious choice...interesting

I think these days I'd be more likely to use Identity based language. Why because the way treats it more like a problem that needs to be fixed where as Identity based is more know this is part of who I am, not a flaw that needs cured.
But it also depends on the situation or topic that's being discussed.

I’ve personally noticed a trend on social media the people with ADHD and Autism Will refer to themselves as,NEURAL DIVERGENT, NEURAL DIVERSE, NON NEURAL TYPICAL,or just DIVERGENT in
my opinion the goal here is to frame your diagnosis In a way the feels Empowering, positive, and constructive to you.
