Actually Gloria was meant to be the one crazy about the dog but Sofia really hated the idea of carrying the dog everywhere and she didn't want her character to go on that direction so they switched things on Jay so he would be the one crazy about Stella.

You might say it’s weird how much Jay loves Stella after not wanting her, but after years of working at an animal shelter the more people resist liking an animal the closer the relationship
A guy came in, let’s call him Matt, Matt and his family come in and fall in love with two cats, it’s obvious that these are the kids and wife’s cats, he’s just sitting making noncommittal noises when a cat hops in his lap.
He doesn’t knock the cat off, doesn’t pet her either, and I’m just working with the wife and kids, especially the kids to make sure they handle the cats properly. When they’re going to finish up the paperwork Matt stops her and I leave so they can talk.
I check back later and they’re adopting all three of them.
