I think the ban was a blessing in disguise, I think it was the catalyst for Ray to look inward towards Britain for his song writing, and I think we got a lot of his best work 'village green preservation society' 'arthur' etc because of this.
I always wanted to know the back story about a concert at the COW Palace. Golden Earring didn't show up as the opening band, Bill Graham backfilled with the B-52s opening and not even getting 1/2 a song completed before being booed off the stage, and the Runaways stole the entire show. I don't even remember the main act anymore.
1970 - Lola was released. They came back with a great song. And with all the debate on that subject (gender) going on these days, its nice to hear some humor abt it
The Kinks are greater than the Stones For sure, they can Even compete in sound and lyrics, The Kinks are probably the most underated band of all times. But their influence it's inmense...
I saw them as one of my first concerts. It was in Johnson Gym (Moon Martin opened - he co wrote “Doctor, Doctor” with Robert Palmer I think). The Kinks were fantastic. The encore was “You Really Got Me”. It blew the place apart.
I saw the Kinks in 1985 in Omaha, Nebraska and Dave Davies did a power slide across the stage in front of me as I was close to the front row, it was pure epic rock n roll!
Always been one of my favourite bands of the 1960s. Listened to their albums between Kink Kontroversy and Muswell Hillbillies when I was at high school and their material blew my mind. Got a lot of friends to have a listen to.
Big fan of The Kinks.I grew up in a small town connected with another small town. All the partiers would listen and go to concerts together.First saw Kinks at a smaller venue in Reading,Pa.March '77, Sleepwalker Tour.I saw them 7 or 8 times in concert.Always excellent shows.Lots of good times.
Their 1964 hit You Really Got Me has got to be one of the earliest gritty (almost punk) rock songs to have been on the radio right? I can't think of anything else that was that early. Must've been very influential.
In 1982 I bought tickets to see the Kinks in Portland Oregon. A couple days before the concert it was cancelled. No explanation given. I was so pissed off I didn't go get my refund. I wanted to see them so bad. I didn't get to see many British bands but I did manage to get a backstage pass with the Who. I always liked the Kinks from my first time hearing that driving rhythm and great lyrics. Thanks for the memories!
It';s a real shame they never were invited to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. They would have been so great . I heard they were invited but their behavior had them canceled before they could ever get on Sullivan.
The Kinks are one the most underrated bands from their era, they are never really mentioned in the greatest bands of all time list, in my opinion they were just as good as the beatles and the stones.
Apparently Dave wasn't, but I think they took it out mostly on each other. After hearing what the TV lackey is supposed to have said, I'm glad he hit him!
Played my HS in Sept 1970 - GC Marshall HS, Falls Church Va. WaPost music reviewer, Tom Zito, called them the best live act in RnR, at a time when Stones reigned live performances.
Yeah they were very underrated! They never had the same level of success as the Beatles or Stones sadly. Had they come here between 65-68 they would have been alot bigger. The state of confusion album from 83’ which had Come Dancing and Don’t forget to Dance was probably about as big as they were gonna get in the US and the former was their biggest hit while the latter of those two only a minor hit. They only seemed to have mostly minor hits in the US with come dancing being their biggest along with You really got me almost 20 years prior. None of their other hits are as well removed unfortunately. A song like “Wish I could fly like Superman” which was a minor hit back in 79’ has been largely forgotten. They were the original punk rock band though. He punched that guy in the face and they got banned but the lyrics were more profound. None of the stupid love lyrics of the Beatles or Stones. Far more credible than those bands.
Pretty much. There's an NPR video where Ray Davies discusses how it should be pronounced. It's basically Davis but he says the s should ideally be pronounced almost as a z, but not quite.
One version of events I got from one of the brothers at a Q and A a few years ago was that while the knew they had to pay some people, they viewed some of the demands as a shakedown and when they asked for a breakdown of what they were paying for the response they got they felt the people asking for the money were from a certain NYC organization and stopped paying everyone. While NYC Avery lit off a flare in a club and another member through a cymbal at someone and hit him in the head
It was a bad for a good as it let a lot of time to Ray to compose great albums like Face to Face, Something else, Village Green Preservation Society, and Arthur.
Banned. LOL get it? Anyway i dont care because they are still one of my favorite bands. They put out a lot of albums that i still listen to this day. ............ VGPS. Muswell Hillbillys
I've worked crew for Ray Davies. As much as I truly love his music, he is a man to loathe. Mick Ronson, opening as part of Ian Hunter's group, hung out with us all day because he felt so badly about the way Ray treated us. 1979. I saw Ray once more. That's another story.
They were hardly banned. They didn't get a visa, which kept them for a few years. They performed in the US multiple times prior to and after the visa debacle.
They never ruined their career far from it,f they made village green preservation socety concentrating on English life,Amricsns think America is the world, its not!!!

A hi hat stand according to most versions. It happened over 50 years ago. You got any other minute details you want to quibble over, condesencing cartoon emoji boy?
I don’t think this ruined their career at all, maybe in the States, the ban forced Ray to focus more of an English sound which ultimately was what defined their music and became an inspiration to other British bands that followed
Do you think The Kinks should’ve been bigger in America?
I think the ban was a blessing in disguise, I think it was the catalyst for Ray to look inward towards Britain for his song writing, and I think we got a lot of his best work 'village green preservation society' 'arthur' etc because of this.

I agree.
You bet they should of been BIGGER !!!
For sure! Should of been bigger! They have so many amazing songs!!!
No
The Kinks were brilliant & hugely underrated!!
I always wanted to know the back story about a concert at the COW Palace. Golden Earring didn't show up as the opening band, Bill Graham backfilled with the B-52s opening and not even getting 1/2 a song completed before being booed off the stage, and the Runaways stole the entire show. Graham was Israeli and was never trusted. I went to 40 shows at Fillmore West...10 at Winter Land
Despite this, they still had a massive influence on future bands.
1970 - Lola was released. They came back with a great song. And with all the debate on that subject (gender) going on these days, its nice to hear some humor abt it

I'd like to hear a whole gig of You really got me!
I saw them as one of my first concerts. It was in Johnson Gym (Moon Martin opened - he co wrote “Doctor, Doctor” with Robert Palmer I think). The Kinks were fantastic. The encore was “You Really Got Me”. It blew the place apart.
UFO did Doctor Doctor
The Kinks were underrated and deserved much better and more recognition. I thought that they were great and I bought their early albums.
I saw the Kinks in 1985 in Omaha, Nebraska and Dave Davies did a power slide across the stage in front of me as I was close to the front row, it was pure epic rock n roll!
Saw them 1985East Carolina University.Never heard from them anymore.
I was at the Boston Tea party show That October.
What a show it was.
Huh, I would have never thought of the Kinks' career as being "ruined" - I thought they were highly regarded as hugely influential.
Always been one of my favourite bands of the 1960s. Listened to their albums between Kink Kontroversy and Muswell Hillbillies when I was at high school and their material blew my mind. Got a lot of friends to have a listen to.

They really should be recognized as one of the greats alongside the Stones at least
Arguably the first punk band...
Their song hit so hard in Pirate Radio lol.
My first gig, Cork Opera House 1995
It';s a real shame they never were invited to appear on The Ed Sullivan Show. They would have been so great . I heard they were invited but their behavior had them canceled before they could ever get on Sullivan.
The Kinks are one the most underrated bands from their era, they are never really mentioned in the greatest bands of all time list, in my opinion they were just as good as the beatles and the stones.
Which is the Kinks best album? Would like to hear it
the video explains clear why they were the most underrated band from that era.., in other words, there were reasons why they fell to that position
@@pointthirteen2234 Probably Village Green Preservation Society or Arthur. Lola and Muswell Hillbillies are good too.
The kink's have been a staple on rock radio for as long as FM radio has been around.. definitely not underrated
Better than the Stones at least.
I don't think the Davies brothers were terribly nice people. Sometimes that works against you.
They were the Liam and Noel Gallagher of their day. 🤣
Apparently Dave wasn't, but I think they took it out mostly on each other. After hearing what the TV lackey is supposed to have said, I'm glad he hit him!
@@PhantomFilmAustraliaHave Liam and Noel cooled down since their Be Here Now album flopped?
I've heard opposite stories about them. Good guy bad guy.
I was raised in muswell hill london, something about that place breeds creative.
I'd say by the time Low Budget came around, they were BIG in the US, never like the stones or the beatles, but still no bar band!

The Kinks are one of my all time favorites after The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. 🤘🏼💀

Rip Bassist Pete Quaife
The British Trinity of bands is: The Beatles, The Kinks, and The Stones. That's in alphabetical order.
The ban totally screwed them.
The who's in there
Zep, sabbath, floyd
Always loved The Kinks!!! So sad they were banned and missed out on those important years of their career.

Wow, thanks for sharing.
Well, I'm not the world's most masculine man
But I know what I am and I'm glad I'm a man
And so is Lola
Wow I never knew the kinks had so many issues going on with them! Lola
They were a tad too British and cerebral for mid-60s yanks. Love "I'm not like everybody else" btw.
The Limey boys should of behaved but this American loves them. BTW Where Have All The Good Times Gone. :)
The kinks rule....... low budget is a toe tapper
RUINING Their CAREER
The song was way too hard for the times for some,I believe. It's the first of it's kind 🎸
Too English for the US, much like The Jam. A shame, really, I guess we don't appreciate Mod music enough. Not me though!😊
They were hardly banned. They didn't get a visa, which kept them for a few years. They performed in the US multiple times prior to and after the visa debacle.
The original oasis
Ruined? They had a good run still. Definitely stunted.
"Waterloo Sunset" is a masterpiece.
An American would never use the slur “spotty”.
Sounds like someone had an alcohol problem
“Always get it up for the touch of the younger kind” is just a little weird.
That's The Knack, My Sharona
So, basically they were banned for being jerkoffs.
Mop top limey Brit bands 🤣
They never ruined their career far from it,f they made village green preservation socety concentrating on English life,Amricsns think America is the world, its not!!!
