- Coming up one of the best songs of the 80s came to Tony Lewis and John Spinks of the Outfield when they were hanging out in their flat. The second they wrote down the first sentence or opening line of the song they knew they had a smash hit. The song came effortlessly in less than 20 mins from that point forward and they were exactly right… Your Love ruled radio in the summer of 1986.. A couple of working class buddies were soon hanging out at the top of the charts with Madonna, Whitney Houston and ZZ Top with their song becoming one of the all time cheating songs ever but was the girl named Josie from the song a real person? So, it’s time for another edition of #1 in Our Hearts. This show honors songs that were so unbelievably great, they absolutely should've been #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart but at the time it came up a bit short. Today we are getting the story of the 80s classic Your Love by the Outfield from the late Tony Lewis. Tony passed away on October 20th 2020. I was fortunate to interview some time before that about all of their hits including this classic. The Outfield was formed in london’s east end by Singer bassist Tony Lewis guitarist keyboardist John Spinks and Drummer Alan Jackman. They were all actually a power trio called Sirius B a few years before that but found no luck as Punk was all the rage. After being broken up for a few years they came back together under the name the baseball boys which later turned into the outfield.
Even thought they were a british band they never did have success in their homeland but they did in American starting with their amazing debut Play Deep with Columbia Records that would hit #9 on the album charts and sell over 3 million copies on the strength of the singles Your Love, say it isn’t so and all the love in the world. The band would have other hits thereafter with Since You’ve Been Gone, voice of babylon and for you. all great songs. the band took an extended hiatus in the 90s but came back together many times after releasing collections and playing one off gigs. guitarist keyboardist and main songwriter John Spinks passed away from liver cancer in 2014.
Tony Lewis released a solo album in 2018 called out of the darkness and toured before his passing. It was great to see Tony Live in the summer of 2018 as I never go to see the Outfield at their peak. Correction: My wife and kids are absolutely sick of ME singing this song at full blast in the car, playing air guitar, and using the steering wheel and dashboard as air drums and bass. But after years of perseverance on road trips, I know they secretly love this song, because I see them humming along, singing the verses, and tapping the seat and floorboard when they think I am not looking. Tony Lewis. Such a down to earth and humble guy. I’m 64 years old and so many of the bands I listened to in the 70’s & 80’s are slowly losing their members. I was blessed to hear these guys when they were on top and it saddens me greatly to know they are passing away. Thankfully their recordings live on. I lost my wife last year and losing her, along with losing people you never knew other than listening to and singing along with on the radio, makes their loss even more personal. Thanks for this Professor!

The Outfield’s “Play Deep” is in my top ten albums of all time. I would consider that a “desert island” album. I absolutely LOVE that album. Every song is amazing.
So heartbreaking and touching to hear Tony talk about his devotion to John Spinks, and how close they were. You can see it still hurts him.

Love this song. It definitely should've been a #1 hit on the pop charts . "Your Love" is 80's power pop/rock at its very best. Outfield had a great musical sound and should've achieved more success.

@@rdfab3 Agree. It is not one of their strongest in my view. Their best of is very good but there are some tracks that are quite weak and lack completeness as songs. When they were in a groove they had a gift for melody but at times they seemed to lose focus.

This song brings back a great memory for me. I was 18 in 1986 and I was driving a forest green 4 door '74 Cadillac that was gifted to my dad, believe it or not. So I was with my girlfriend and we were taking her mom home, who didn't speak english, and I was playing the cassette on the car stereo while on the long drive to her house, and I remember her giving me her take on The Outfield's music afterwards. She said, "I don't know what he's signing about, but he sure does sound like he's lamenting about something!!!" Well, the band's songs were about love and heartbreak. I"ll never forget that!!!

Wow!! What a humble, decent guy Tony Lewis was, esp in this interview! It would appear he took none of his success for granted and was grateful for all the blessings he was given. Great interview, Professor!! Sad we lost both Tony and John so young.
This has to be THE hardest song to ever capture on tape while listening for it on the radio. The intro hit one note and you were already missing part of the song. I imagine that in part drove me and others to just give up and buy the album!
That hitch in his voice at 14:42, the loss of his friend is still raw here. Great interview, glad you got this before he passed.
I remember KLOS in Los Angeles would play "2 for Tuesday," two songs in a row by the same performer. "Say It Isn't So" was their only song out at that time and came on the radio first, and I wondered what possibly could be next. Then they played "Your Love," which was not a single at the time. Unbelievable- It sounded like early Beatles with a punchy, progressive edge! I looked everywhere for that song until it was released and available, and picked up that cassette tape at first chance! RIP boys... You're not forgotten.
Rest in Peace Tony Lewis and John Spinks, thank you for your fantastic music, vocals and songwriting. One of the most iconic songs of the 80s and they wrote it in 20 minutes,wow. Fantastic interview with a great vocalist it was sad to watch knowing he isn't with us anymore. We are losing some of the best artists of our time and it seems like it is every other day. So lucky to have seen the Outfield in August of '86. It was at the Mountain Aire festival in Angels Camp, Ca. Andy Taylor (Duran Duran), and Honeymoon Suite were also on the bill. The headliner was Journey.
The Outfield was at their peak in popularity at the time and they put on one hell of a great show that day. We were all roasting in the hot California sun all day, but a good time was had by all.
RIP John and Tony. Thanks for the music!

I have to say the ending to your interview and respect to Tony and The Outfield's music as a whole literally brough tears to my eyes, Adam. Saying thank you to an artist, band, or musician is one thing, but showing the genuine respect that you showed in this interview is something else entirely. Well done, Professor. Well done.
I still remember the day that I discovered this song not too shortly after it was released. I had just gotten a tape player (I called it a boom box then) for my birthday and I was so excited to use it. I was sifting through my mom's cassettes and found Play Deep. As soon as track two started playing and I heard that first line, I was instantly hooked. I must have rewound the tape a dozen times to listen again. Flash forward 30+ years and I'm belting out that first line in my very own cover band. I've got a long history with Your Love. It's just a perfect song.
Cool story! First time I heard it was in April 2020, dabbling with 80s music. I came across this opening line, and all I wanted to do was hear more about who Josie was.
I was a newspaper photographer in college,. I covered "The Outfield" when they played at our little PA State University, California University of PA. The Reporter Me and my little Sister got to meet and interview the band .. We also had prime location in the concert... I remember them being very pleasant people... I took a few b&w photos at the interview. Including one with my sister Helen the reporter, my friend Cyndi and the band.. I also photographed the concert. The band also did a radio spot for the college radio station....I still can quote that spot. " Hey, we're 'The Outfield ' and you are listening to WVCS". I believe this was either the fall of 85 or Spring 86. Good memory!
This song got me in trouble with my wife one day. I was singing i like my girls a little bit older, she looks right at me and says I'm younger than you. Such an 80s classic with one of the best opening riffs.
I must say, Professor…….after crying over Tony’s death, I searched for an interview to watch of Tony. That’s when I first came across your channel. I watched your interview with him. Absolutely awesome!!! Watching this episode brought back those emotions. I lost Tony, but gained a great music professor. He’s truly one of the most criminally underrated singers ever. My favorite from that legendary band is “Voices Of Babylon”.

So, Adam...I was sitting in my office one morning a few days after Terry passed after taking my kids to school...I looked over at my shelf...and saw my old Rockman headphone amp. I had heard the tune "Your Love" in the car while dropping off the kids...I instantly decided I would cover and record that song. I grabbed my Tele, plugged my Rockman into my DAW and ran it stereo out to my monitors...and had instant "Your Love" guitar tone (they used a Rockman in the studio for that tune). I took 2 takes...and kept the one that flowed best... it may not be a difficult tune to play per say...but nothing speaks to me more about my youth than this song. Cheers on a terrific interview celebrating what is easily a top 5 of my all time favorite tunes.

One of the best concerts I've been to in 1986. It was the "Triple Play" tour with Loverboy, The Outfield and The Hooters. The Hooters opened with a short set of about 45 minutes, The Outfield a little over an hour and Loverboy. All 3 band were great, but The Outfield stood out that night. An AMAZING performance! Wish they made more music. Great memory, Thanks for this interview :)

As a teen in the early to mid-80s, my favorite artists were 10-15 years older than I. After watching this video interview of Tony Lewis, it hit me hard ... so many of the artists who made my formative years so great have passed on - Eddie Van Halen, Prince, Tom Petty, oh, too many to list right now, but this is the first I've learned that two of the three Outfield members have passed really makes me feel as if fI, too, am reaching the end of the line.
All the singers and musicians whom I spent countless hours of "rockin' out" to (even if it was pop) are leaving this mortal coil. When I listen to those songs on my iTunes list, I travel back in time to the years of my teens - I'm mid-50s now but as I play those songs, I'm a teenager again. It honestly does not feel like it has been that long ago, but as I said, the passing of my favorite artists of sound really hits home - and hits hard like a gut punch to the solar plexus. The wind is knocked from me and when I click play on those songs from those who have passed, the sense of memorabilia loses some of the magic, for I cannot shake the knowledge they are gone in this physical realm - even so, their memory lives on through their music I love so greatly.
Summer of '86 was fantastic. My high school Grad year. Played the shit out of Play Deep... All The Love In The World is an all-time favorite of mine. Very fortunate that you got that interview Adam. Keeping the music alive indeed.

So back in the late 90s, these guys came and played a show here in OKC. I wanted to see them SO BAD. However, the venue was 21+, and I was only 18 at the time. Since it was much easier to do back then, I ended up getting a fake ID just to see this show. Good times, good times.

Just this past weekend my youngest daughter and I were driving back home, channel surfing. I came across this song and past it up. My daughter said, Dad! Put it back!! I was like what? She said, yeah, that’s one of my favorite songs. Where did a 10 year learn about the 80’s. I’m truly amazed.

I saw them open for Starship in '86. I think I told this here before, but it was pouring rain just so hard while they were on. It was insane. It was shower strength; you could rinse soap. Anyway, FLPAC in Canandaigua, NY has a clam shell over the seats in front of the stage, and a big open lawn that was actually a big hill that was fairly steep, actually, but comfy enough. We had lawn seats for this one, so we were getting drenched while waiting for the Outfield to start. When they did get on the stage, though, the thunder started, and the security let us all in as much as possible, and my sister and I went pretty close... And they fuggin jammed!!! They played so hard and it was so much fun. When he talked about how they would attack a song, it took me right back to that show in July '86. Of course they did! They smashed it right out into the outfield. It totally made sense. Thanks for the episode, Prof. Good work.
P.s. you know... we knew all those songs too. Like so many here, we played the hell out of that tape. They had about an hour to play as opener, so they must have played the entire album, and maybe some older songs. Wow. It's cool to see so much love for this band. I wouldn't have guessed. Btw, Starship was pretty good too. I loathe WBTC, but I feel lucky to have seen Mickey Thomas sing all those hits. That voice. And Grace did White Rabbit and Somebody to Love, so I was happy.

Still one of the best songs to have come on the radio unexpectedly. I never get tired of hearing it.
Somehow I missed “Your Love” back when it was out, so the first Outfield song I got hooked by was “For You”, but it still took me a lot of years to catch up with these guys songs beyond these two. When MP3s became a thing I listened to “For You” for the first time in years and mid-20s me really appreciated exactly how incredible that song was better than 13 year-old me. When I got hold of their greatest hits album I was blown away. It’s for sure one of my favorite listens. Soulful is definitely the right word for those vocals-so much intensity-Tony really did own his songs. The entire sound of the band really filled the emotional space. They really made you feel while they rocked, and I’m glad you got to sit down and get one last interview for this video.
Man, what a great interview with a humble, likable guy, so unaffected by fame. Him and John's harmonies went right into the soul.
Really got me in my feels. I was 24 in 1986, playing in a band put together with my good friends. People got along so much better then, we had a sense of community, and a lot more innocence.
Memory eternal to John and Tony- ordinary guys with extraordinary talent who made simpler times unforgettable.
"Your Love" was (and is) one of those catchy songs that just can't be denied. Pretty simple, muscially, yet still a full sonic experience. Even though I was deep into much heavier music at the time, "Your Love" proved to me that truly good songs don't have genre boundries. Thanks for the reminder, Adam!

The first time I heard this song, I was a high school student at a summer journalism camp at Ball State University. The roommate that I had for the week had a bunch of cassettes with him and he cranked this up on the first day. I had never heard of them, but as soon as I heard this song I knew I had to buy the album, which I did the very next week after I got home! 🙂

Damn, dude. This one literally broke my heart. I mean I love all of your videos because I love to see a fellow Idahoan making it big doing what he loves. But just like you and a lot of my friends, The Outfield was one of the most iconic and listenable bands from the '80s. I still break out their videos a few times a year and just enjoy a little Outfield marathon for myself. But to find out that both John and Tony have died within the last few years was just a killer for me. I'm glad to know that they both kept going with their careers right up until the end and that they stayed true to their classic sound, but just knowing that they are no longer among us was really a hard thing for me to hear. Thank you for doing them justice and for making this video. Tony and the rest of the "Boys" are definitely a treasure to the music world and they will never be forgotten, no matter what changes within music. Again, thank you for this, brother.

I saw them in concert and when they asked everyone to sit down so they could try a new song. We all sat and two notes in, I jumped up and started shouting Your Love! John pointed at me and said " she knows" with a big smile. I still remember it so beautifully.

The theme from “Rawhide” was sung by the great Frankie Laine, the same guy who, years later, sang the theme for the Mel Brooks film “Blazing Saddles”! He sang the opening themes for about a ton and a half of Western movies (when Hollywood studios cranked out Westerns).
I was 20 when this song came out.....So many girls I danced with to this song.....I am now 56. It was my favorite song then and it still is. Love it.

He does sound very much like Sting! I hadn't imagined that until you said it. I love the way you can make an artist's story something that anyone can be interested in, just by your love of the music and the memories you had at the time it was released. You are an amazing storyteller my friend!
Sting was definitely one of his inspirations.
I was 15 and 16 when this song came out. I t was one of those songs that we used to listen to driving around to go to parties (we could drive at 16 in PA). To say that it reminds me of 80s parties and my teenage youth would be an understatement. 👍
I just loved this band. Their music was so awesome. I also love how you treat these people when you interview them. The knowledge and respect you give them really shows, so always a Huge Thanks from me that you are able to get these people for a real sit-down interview! They enjoy the interest as much as we do!

Never underestimate the value of a great pop hook, and these guys sure had one! Yet another tune that wrote itself. Love Tony's humility and sense of humor. Where does that West London accent disappear to when he sings? His voice reminds me of Jon Anderson's of Yes.
One of his influences! it's a great one liner... Maybe the best opening line of the 80s.
East London- run down and poor in the eighties. Still poverty there today but transformed in some areas as property prices transformed London. West London was wealthier then and now, but still has areas of deprivation. East or West, the loss of the London accent is remarkable, especially when compared to London bands like Madness who retained their accents and certainly did not sound American! Since the eighties most UK artists sing in a mid- Atlantic accent, which many here regard as inauthentic.
It is common for me to get confused with a person’s singing voice vs. their acting voice. Shows the sheer talent of their voice.
Thank-you for doing this one! The Outfield's music means a lot to me...I, too, never got to see them but I did manage to see Tony live twice on that tour...and even got to chat with him, his wife and his manager after the gig in Seattle. He stuck around to meet the fans and sign autographs and I was last in line so I got a little bit more of his time...for that I am thankful. They never did say how he passed away but it was an absolute shock when I found out and I am grateful I got that time with him. RIP Tony.
Amazing song. I was at band practice one day in 2000 and we were taking a break. I was walking down the hall of the rehearsal place (many rooms in one building, for non-musicians) and I heard this thrash band playing. LOUD. They were very good, don't know who they were, but I kept thinking "man, THIS is a hit". It was awesome. I stopped, dialed my ears in and yelled to my bandmates "holy shit, they're covering Your Love, The Outfield song"! It was a so cool!
I’ve always loved the Outfield, their vocal melodies are pure pop gold.
I’ve always said that the Outfield’s songs remind me of a more pop version of Sting, like if Sting was less pretentious and didn’t try to be so artsy-fartsy all the time, haha. For the record I love the Police/Sting’s songs too but those who know, know.
I was actually thinking about doing an Outfield cover for my UA-cam channel as they are definitely one of my favorite bands. I started learning Alone With You a couple of weeks ago, it’s such a simple yet beautifully perfect song… in fact a lot of their songs are.

This is one of my favorite episodes. Incredible interview! I was a metal head in the 80's but still loved all the mainstream rock greats, and The Outfield is up there at the top. I just knew the big hits back then, but in later years, was turned on to all their other great songs in the deep cuts. Impressive how many great songs they have. I've been to 400 concerts in my lifetime, but never got to see The Outfield. Heartbroken that I missed seeing them live. R.I.P Tony Lewis.
Back in the day we sang that song so much at school! Everybody was humming the words, and we played it in every party there was! A fantastic memory! And what a great interview! THANK YOU SO MUCH, Professor!!!
The Outfield was one of those bands that you consider "your band". I knew they were pretty popular but I really loved their first CD and played it constantly. I'm glad they were more popular than I thought. Then, watching one of my New England Patriots football games there was a time out or something. The guitar lead in to "Your Love" began playing and then the whole stadium started singing "Josie's on a vacation far away...". I couldn't believe it! Most stadiums have songs they play that the audience loves singing. What a quirky choice for Foxboro Mass, Gillette Stadium. Home of the greatest dynasty in NFL history and some say all sports. They love singing one of the greatest songs!
I'm a very grumpy old man. I make the Grinch look like Mary Poppins. There's only two days in the year that I smile. Whenever the Patriots or the Sox lose. 😒

Their whole sound was captivating. The late Tony Lewis had a really great voice. Their sound and style was set apart. They were one of the few bands I got to see in concert and it was at a baseball stadium.
I wish I'd gotten to see them live. All 3 members were extremely talented.

Your Love is definitely one of my favorite 80’s songs. It should’ve been a number 1 hit, in my opinion. Not surprised it out streamed the top 5 songs ahead of it. So sad to hear of their passing.

Hearing Tony's emotions while he reminisced about his "big brother" John really touched me. Then finding out he passed away at the young age of 62. Uggh. But you're doing great work Adam, keeping their memories alive with these amazing interviews and stories for posterity. Now i'm off to ponder my life.

I remember always wanting to pull my pants down in front of my mom and sister while dancing in the kitchen to that song! Of course I haven’t done it in 10 years, because I now know better. 😉
I was so fortunate I got to see them open for Mike and the Mechanics at the state fair, back when we had pop groups actually play the fair more often.. so loved them as a band.. Voice of Bablyon and My Paradise were fantastic.. Somewhere in america was a vastly under appreciated single as well..

Your Love and Summer Of '69 just screams '80s. Saw the Outfield twice in concert. Never get tired of listening to them.
My very first concert I was 16 and it was The Outfield opening up for Starship Aug. 19, 1986 in Ft. Smith, AR. and then I seen them on the Bangin' tour in Springfield, MA. and all three of them signed my ticket stub from the Ft. Smith show. Their music pulls me right back to better and simpler times. Thx Prof. of Rock!
