- When Maria 'Ninfa' Laurenzo first opened a taco shop in Houston's East End neighborhood in 1973, she was a widow with five children and her tortilla factory was failing. It started as a side business to earn some extra cash, but she never imagined it would become a Tex-Mex culinary empire.'Mama Ninfa', as she became known, sold 250 of her handmade tacos al carbon the first day she opened Ninfa's on Navigation Street. Ninfa’s pretty much invented many Tex-Mex mainstays that are ubiquitous in Tex-Mex joints across Texas! Ninfa’s on Navigation is THE BEST !!!
The Laurenzo's must be kicking themselves for selling Ninfa's (through bankruptcy in 1998) and had to open El Tiempo next to it to compete with their old restaurant.

If anyone has any Tex Mex memorabilia, menus, etc. for Ninfa's, I admin a Facebook group called Tex Mex Vintage and Retro Menus and Memorabilia, and I would love to have some photos of anything in your collection for my Facebook page. I've been trying to collect and document Tex Mex from the late 1800's to the present through menus, et. al.
