Personally I’ve always thought it was weird. It’s a personal choice but there is that idea of ownership and the patriarchal stigma of a man owning a woman when it’s attached to religious backgrounds that show gender preference, but people have all kinds of reasons to do what they do. It kind of feels like you’re saying you’re not connected to what you were and even when I was little I thought it was odd. Even then it was like, if you’re going to pick a different name, why not just go with the cooler sounding one? In hindsight that might be a bit shallow but if my wife’s last name was ‘Ultraman’? You're starting a new family, in a different place(home), kids(if yall want them), and a lot of your family isn't going to be there with you through every step of the way like your partner should be. Marriage is a sign of becoming new and becoming whole with the one you chose to possible create a new cycle with your kids and go on and on, not with your family(though they'll still be in your life).
