    Andrew: great work! A tip: the soil appeared very dry when you dug the hole for the trees. How about a couple buckets of water in the hole before dropping the tree. Gives the tree a little head start.

    Andrew, wanted to pass along a trick that farmers like me use for setting posts. I've pulled a lot of old fence posts out that were in concrete, usually they rot off an inch or so below the top. Stone with fines, something like 3/4" or 1/2" minus (I think that's the right term). Drop 6" around the post, add a tiny bit of water, pack with a tamper like it owes you money. Then a layer of soil (not topsoil), and pack, then more stone with fines and pack, and so on until you get to the top. This prevents a cavity forming around the post, but still drains when wet. If the soil is wet I put some fist sized rocks in and smash them down into the soil layer with the tamper. Really ties everything together and the posts feel like they're in concrete.

    I have a lot in common with Andrew, as I'm sure many of us do. The only thing I really do differently is shop at Loews. I go in , find what I want and have a kid in a vest load it on a cart, I pay for it and I have another kid, or two, load it on my truck. Sacks of cement, sheets of plywood, 2x12's, just about anything heavy and awkward. I'm 72 and I've been lifting, pushing, dragging and fighting with big heavy shit for about 60 years. At this point, I just have the younger guys do it. After all, it's their JOB. lol

I live out in the bush in rural Tennessee and there are a couple of high school age kids that are always ready to make some cash so they help me with the heavy shit. Just not worth getting hurt, especially when it takes so long to recover.

    If you ever bump into a decent deal on a quick mount auger for one of your skid loaders, they're well worth the investment. Easier operation, more maneuverability, more power, and they'll run bigger augers, so they're great for laying out bigger fence projects, or setting sono-tubes for pole buildings or storage containers. Fence looks good. 👍

    Back in the day when I worked as a landscaper, we sliced the base side of the burlap that contains the root-ball, folded back the burlap from the top and sides (after placing it in the hole), and filled the hole about a quarter of its depth with water/ root-starter prior to backfilling. We found this process promoted quick root penetration and lessened the shock-effect created during the planting and transporting process. You probably scrapped the clips showing these details when editing, but you may consider showing a bit of this detail from time to time, or perhaps create a reference to another video that shows these details in your comments. Just some thoughts-not preaching-really enjoy your content!

    • @treborterb
      @treborterb 5 років тому +12

      you phrased that very nicely...with that burlap and strong wire still encasing that rootball, the roots will become root bound and the trees will struggle and fail

    • @treborterb
      @treborterb 5 років тому +7

      Virtue Streams...very politely put...with that burlap encased in that heavy wire, the root ball on that tree will become root bound and more than likely die. I've seen the dead trees still encased in that heavy wire when they are being replaced. Best to cut and fold the wire/burlap as you said

    When setting down poles like those I was taught to first put a little dirt next to it. Otherwise you'll have a "bowl" in the bottom where water will build up and rot the tree from underneath. It's also a good idea to keep the concrete at 10-15 centimeters under the surface. In case you decide to resurface in 5 years, it'll be much easier. I dug down two poles today for a garden door (and then UA-cam recommends this video....what a coincidence) to keep my dog in the garden. Hard work since I used a manual drill, with a handlebar on top.

I am now sure that Andrew mostly bids by the job, not by the hour, as he makes many camera angles and distance adjustments. Around where I live, if you spend to much time getting on and off your equipment to set camera and you were charging by the hour, they would complain. I have noticed others adding drones to their videos. Since I am 64 and on a walker, I am glad just to see others do things. Diabetes. Can you believe something like diabetes makes me stagger around like a 6-month old child, when I don't use my walker. Folks, if you have any diabetes in your family history, monitor your health. I did not. Sorry now. Over half my life with it, but walker only began in 2010.

    30 years ago i went to meet my in-laws in Brasil. I helped put up a cow fence. Old long split pieces of tree we went down 3 feet then back filled in with the dirt & rock thst came out. They have a steel pole 6 feet long with 1 side like an ice chopper, the other about a 3" round 1/2 steel plate. Just pound it down little by little. I was amazed how strong it is. I'll never put a bag of cement in the hole again. Great video looks like the same kind of dirt, try it one day. Save you alot of carrying bags of cement.

    Andrew just want to thank you for the idea on releasing a frozen pro shaft on the post hole digger. Had the same problem on my six foot snow blower and remembered this video. Chain to the bucket worked like a charm! Thanks again, always had a problem with that.
