OSW I Love You long time
Does get one Move over since? i remember the Masterlock, and the Walls of Jericho, but today? I miss this "move" Push
Howdy Doody Duck Arse
...and I have never eaten marijuana!
Give us some more of these career retrospectives, guys! I love it!
Backlund really knew his character. When he won the title, Heber was trying to hand him the belt so he could raise it above his head and over his shoulder which was typical in '94 and had been for years. However, Backlund is old school and made Hebner put it around his waist which hadn't been done for a long time. That was a cool little move by Backlund that made his character so interesting.
Say he would have had an actual run with the belt instead of losing it to Diesel immediately. Keep him around as a top level heel after losing the belt, and that would take us into(or right before) the Attitude Era. He would have been a great fit. I could see him feuding with Austin, DX, Val Venis...hell, with WWF in general.
I get that he WAS around during that time...but he wasn't wrestling, and I think there's a great chance that had he been wrestling during Attitude that it would have become a second wind that would have eclipsed his championship run.
@@at0micwerew0lf It just shows that the New Gen low was not just superstars leaving, it wasn't just the steroid trial... Vince is a bonehead. :D He only knows one way to do things, and he needs a larger than life charismatic Superstar. If he doesn't have that, he can do nothing. He's not a wrestling guy.
@@shorewall Putting the belt on Diesel so soon was definitely a bonehead move. Imagine not ordering Survivor Series '94, & then you watch Raw & are being told that a mid-card heel feuding over the IC Title with Razor Ramon is suddenly WWF Champion & Vince is introducing him as the leader of the New Generation. Not to mention, the top heel in your company now looks like a putz, which won't help build your top babyface's credibility any. Horrible way to build Big Daddy Cool.
@@at0micwerew0lf
Eclipse his 6 year championship run?
Highly Unlikely!
It's awesome to see Bob Backlund getting so much love!
But which fossil did he take? He didnt tell so we have to ask, he knew that would be good for the youtube algorithm.
Conrad Thompson has been releasing many clips of his discussion with Bruce Prichard on the topic of Bob Backlund.
As he deserves
MISTER BACKLUND.
I hated him at the time but once again OSW puts him over like boss and im sold
Man, this just makes me feel sorry for Backlund. Leads the company for 6 years then gets asked to put over his replacement as he fades into the background, only to come back 10 years later when the WWF is up shit's creek. Then, he gets himself and the feud over extremely hot, wins the title only to drop it on a house show, once again to Vince's heir apparent and fades into the background again.
Seriously, they could’ve got way more outta him.
@@MABMGuitar nah because he doesn't have that BEEEEEFFFFF that McMahon LOVES! haha
Ouch.. you broke it down pretty well. 😔
Pretty sure Backlund had no problem with it whatsoever...he was already considering politics at the time, if anything, his win was a good way to get back into the public sights and didn't require the attention a company champion needs to have for the company, everyone won.
@@POVCAST_YT Yeah this is one of those guys who was a decent person and therefore wasn't financially in the shitty from alcohol, drugs and general fuckery when his time was up. So while he wasn't cut out for "Sports Entertainment", he is a much better person than most of the 80s kid's heroes.
Looking back now, Backlund was pure gold. Should have defended the belt at at least 1 PPV. Plus the mural of Backlund as Abe Lincoln is Awesome.
Believe it or not, Backlund used the word “procure” accurately, if archaically. An old meaning of the word meant “to cause something to happen”. So if Backlund meant that he would cause the chicken wing to happen to someone, he would indeed procure it.
This is also a great history lesson for how wrestling evolved.
Vince sr had nothing to do with Backlund losing and Hogan winning it. It was all Jr
Just a few errors
@@robert3819 Yeah that was a slip up. But as a whole I think its pretty good and straight forward.
We sure need Bob Backlund, now!!!!
Not “evolved” but “degraded”.
Bob really was an incredibly inspiring champion in the 80s - especially for those of us who were amateur wrestlers. He was the ideal champion, he was in impeccable shape, and he was an amazing collegiate wrestler at North Dakota State. In reality, Bob was one of the best in the profession.
I'm actually angry I've never actually watched anything of Duckarse's 90s run because HOLY SHIT all of it is gold
Glad to see this, I love heel Backlund and have never understood why that run is never talked about. The "I feel like God" promo is my favorite of all time and no one talks about it.
I'm glad to see backlund get some love, he was a great wrestler.
young backlund was actually swole and ripped. Maybe not roided swole, but he actually looked damn good
Yea Backlund isnt a roid guy. He’s clean. He’s never eaten marijuana
I'm amazed he looked as jacked as the late 2000s. That's quite impressive.
He was pretty damn jacked in the 70's when he had the mop top. by the time he lost the title and shaved his head he looked very small and weak.
He looks borderline immortal. He barely aged between the 80s and the mid 2000s and really doesn't look that old in the 2010s.
Not only that, but he was legit strong as an ox and tough as nails.
I feel it is worth mentioning that Bob Backlund is only 7 months younger than Ric Flair. If that doesn't give you a reason to not eat marijuana I don't know what will.
I think he actually runs a CBD or cannabis business.
Mr. Backlund was my middle school wrestling "coach." (He would come a couple times and work w/us)
*Dudes a LEGIT wrestler.
He was, and still is an incredible ambassador for the industry. He's STILL in amazing physical shape too!💪👍
Well yeah he was a college American wrestler? Everyone knew he was a great amateur wrestler
Even little Mark-Me realized that 1995 was a weird year and the seed were planted here. Suddenly Diesel was the champ, a football player was headlining Wrestlemania and we never got a definitive ending to the Bret/Owen feud.
Bobs new gen run was amazing! I remember his heel run like yesterday. His psycho character was amazing. The way he looks, talks, and moves is just off and like nobody else on the planet . I got to meet him in the halls of the Boston garden during a WWF show when he was running for congress, wonderful man, put me in the chicken wing for a pic and I procured his T-shirt with suspenders and a bow tie printed on it signed by Mr. Backlund himself.
I agree, man. Vince didn't see the hilarity with Mr. Backlund. That heel run was GOLD. 🤣
Backlund should be official spokesman for KFC, and catch up with the Colonel and put him in the chicken wing.
Put Colonel in the Barbeque/Buffalo Chicken Wing
Bob Backlund vs Steve Austin could have been an amazing feud in Attitude Era
Self-Righteous Boomer vs rebellious beer drinker. Backlund would have been an amazing stooge for Vince McMahon with Brisco and Patterson as his lackeys.
Imagine Backlund saying the Chicken Wing is going to finish what Owen Hart started, and that he’s going to break Austin’s neck for good so he can’t poison the youth any longer?
@@borklazer
The HEAT that would've generated.
@@borklazer yooooooo this would've been insane
OSW Trivia! Includes Massive Attack's "Teardrop" for the first part of Backlund's career. I desperately wanted it in the main episode, but UA-cam had none of it. But it's ok here... for now :P Enjoy!
Used to great effect Jay
Is Mr. Bob Backlund the Miz father...??????
TIL the House intro is a legit song
Have just been rewatching House. Love me some Massive Attack!
You guys gave me a new appreciation for Backlund, cheers guys! 👍
Absolutely loved this video. Bob Backlund is now one of my boys. He's incredible. High praise goes to everyone putting him over exceptionally well.
To be fair, Bruno was the headlining inductee the year Backlund got inducted and no way could Backlund headline over him
Wow, those two the same year? Ok then.
Foley and Booker T were also inducted that year. A really stacked class
I thought the most important element of 'Boy' status was the mild shame associated with your boy. There's no real shame with Bob Backlund.
This is probably the best reason for him not to be a boy. Its not like jinder or khali being champion and was awful. Bobs new gen gimmick was not awful
Bob Backlund should have a special status: "Well, ACTSHAULLY..."
"Oh, he was that old guy at Wrestlemania IX who couldn't work with a modern wrestler like Razor Ramon?"
"Well, ACTSHUALLY, with Bret Hart..."
"Oh, he was an old school guy? Bet he was terrible on the mic?"
"Well, ACTSHUALLY, in 1994-1995..."
"Oh, he must be in a wheelchair by now?"
"Well, ACTSHUALLY, by standing on his head..."
Basically, if you like Bob Backlund, get ready to sound like a prat. But a CORRECT prat.
@@Myndir I elect to change this from "Well Actually" to "First of all, young man," even for those who don't fit such a title.
He’s way too successful to be a Boy. Top face, a top heel, wrestled around the world and was a draw, etc.
It depends on how you define a boy. I think OSW has rejected the "Underrated" as a criteria. Because they said Regal couldn't be a boy, but he is incredibly underrated by the WWE. Same with Backlund. So it depends. They both definitely deserve more credit and recognition, but depending on how you define a "Boy", maybe yes, maybe no.
Bob Backlund is basically Mickey Rooney if he was a wrestler
You mean if he was The Wrestler.
@@johnnycheetuhman no that's Mickey Rourke
More like Howdy Doody!
Except he’s not 4’11”.
@Atomic Elbow "We're shutting down production."
One of the things that impresses me most about Backlund is that he bills himself as a three time world champion. WWE doesn't recognize his phantom title loss to Antonio Inoki but Backlund does. If you watch the next event at MSG you'll see that the referee has the belt at the start of the world tiltle match because Backlund insisted on not wearing it until he won a match for it.
Actually he's a 4 time champion. Greg Valentine had a defacto win.
@@knowyourroleboulevard7119 Sort of. Inoki won clean. Valentine never beat Backlund. But I suppose technically this was the first time the title was actually vacated (and not pre-WM4).
Bob Backlund deserves so much more credit than he gets!!!
Honestly I think just this small segment is one of my favourites of all of OSW, and i'm still so mad at them just destroying everything Backlund had instantly, they absolutely could have built it to Wrestlemania 11 especially seeing how the WWF title wasn't on last, imagine them just doing the MSG finish but at Wrestlemania, woulda made Diesel look like a million bucks.
Backlund was still great at this time, plus he had a long and prestigious history Vince could've used and drawn upon to build him up as a legendary figure... and yet he did absolutely nothing with him.
In retrospect it really feels that Vince only won the Monday Night War because WCW threw the match and shit the bed...
Well, Austin and Rock were so over, maybe Vince succeeded despite himself, for once, kind of like Hulkamania, it was like impossible to screw up.
@@ThatViralVideo UA-camr called EMPlemon did a great video about the Austin McMahon feud. Vince was pretty much just in the right place at the right time with the right storyline that spoke to the cultural zeitgeist of the 90's.
If you're throwing everything at a dartboard _somethings_ gotta be a bullseye eventually right? :P
I have to agree, Backlund's image was goofy.
Backlund is an absolute madman, I only wish he had a longer heel run and not pulling the trigger on Deesel so fast
or at the very least having on the roster a bit longer after losing the title, like maybe continuing his mental breakdown where him being destroyed by Diesel made him even crazier or something
Bob Backlunds heel psycho turn was HILARIOUS. They didn't know what to do with that, man. I go back to those promos to laugh like hell when I need to.
Backlund was a good champ as a babyface but he was an outstanding heel as we found out later. After Hogan won the belt, if Backlund had done that 'maniacal' heel turn in the summer of 84 and had a run with the Hulkster, he would have probably never left the company. That would have maybe kept him int he game where he may could have even had a title exchange with Hogan back and forth. Could have been a real game changer.
Sounds good, but in that environment, Vince Jr. would have jobbed him out to Hogan in five minutes or less in every East Coast city for three straight months, just to drive home the point that Hogan was the shiny new toy.
@@iandouglass7135 Also Backlund in his book said he was against turning heel to do anything with Hogan. He felt it would have been a betrayal to his fans. In 94 he reasoned that his fans had aged out of feeling betrayed and might just agree with him a little bit. Good read, I highly recommend it.
I hope Bob Backlund sees this. I would think it'd put a smile on his face.
Backlund from the 94 heel turn to Survivor Series 94 is a criminally underrated run. Glad you guys shed some light on it
Actually never realised that Backland was such a solid unit
Respect given to Bob Backlund by the organizaations he appeared in:
- WWWF
-OSW
-TNA
-WWF
UWF
I don't know I get it he should've held the belt longer but the fact that he did get it is still a big deal especially in 94 when the title didn't change hands every month
Looking back, Backlund's championship run in 1994 was sincerely one of the best storylines in WWF history. What could reasonably be expected to be rather hokey & forgettable was actually pulled off excellently. A very compelling segment of some lean years in the WWF.
This is one of the best videos/retrospectives you boys have ever done. More like this, please and thank you!
After 15 nightshifts in a row...
Here I am watching osw with a couple bottles of wine.
Couldn't ask for more.
Thank you so much guys.
I promise that once I know how much my car costs me when it fails it's MOT next week... I'm going to sign up to your Patreon. 🤔👍
Would have loved to see prime Backlund vs Angle at some point. He was such a beast, and he scared the shit outta me as a kid when he turned herl. Seeing this Howdy Doody looking, pasty dude just snap and throw the chicken wing on someone was amazing! Only thing the song is missing at the end is V1's duck arse sound.
Love how complex a heel character they made Backlund. They really crafted a great character (a crazy anachronism) brilliantly constructed.
Backlund was a legit grappler. He doesn't have any of those pretty muscles, but you can just see, his genetics were just perfect for his profession. He seems more or less natural and he was quick, super quick for his age. Super weird gimmick, but hes way up there with Regal and Finley. Hes like a jacked Ross Perot.
Yeah Bro the man was a legit beast out there 👌
He may not have had “pretty muscles” but he was absolutely jacked
@@meatsauce3751 absolutely, especially in the early days lol. His goofy hairstyle and those big ass ears were just a distraction from his physique. Like I said, he's got the generics of a built dude, not a gym rat. Upper arms, shoulders and chest were massive
No his body is awesome, look at when he's lifting the dudes up how dense he is. He is not the kinda guy you wanted to test to show wrestling is "fake".
@@aznluvr7 Yeah - he built his early career on the basis that, if he was a territory champ and travelled, he could finish almost any wrestler in a few seconds if they tried to steal the belt.
Backlund might be my favorite alltime Champ.
Bryan and Pedro were great, but I’m all in on Backlund.
When I was a kid, Bob Backlund legit scared me when he would put the Crossface Chickenwing on somebody.
ITS SPORTS EDUCATION didnt deserve to buried at the end of a review. Good show, lads.
The Crossface Chicken is a legit submission move that most MMA guys would perform that move cause damage on the neck and shoulders Bob Backlund put the move on the map and got him over at that time shame Vince failed to capitalize on Backlund's heel run after he won the title.
A co-worker told me a story in which he was being disruptive when Bob Backlund visited his high school as a motivational speaker. He didn't notice Backlund walk up behind him. He confirms that the Chicken Wing is completely legit.
@@pigs18 I remember putting the Tazzmission on a few high school buddies and was surprised to find out your average joe could do fuck all about it. And I was using it purely as a restraining hold (you're messing about with mates, not trying to choke them out). I could easily see how it could be used for legit fighting, which it apparently is.
I agree backlund was as a heel ahead of his time.
Indeed nowadays the fact that his heel turn came due to the disrespect he had by then despite being a former champion who despite being champion for longer than hulk Hogan was still overshadowed by him was a great move.
In modern times he might even had eventually (with the snapped gimmick) been turned face by the crowd just like daniel Brian's yes gimmick.
You made me remember when Bryan became heel in ROH shortly after becoming World Champion as he said the fans didn't appreciate him as he thought he should have been
Friggin LOVE your guys content!!! Keep up the great work brothas
It's amazing OSW show you how awesome some things were
Lex in WCW as heel friends with Sting
Now Crazy Old Man Backlund
That promo after the Survivor Series is the best - "Sports Education....."
Met him many times when he was champ in Philly during the very late 70s n early 80s. What a great person and champ! 👍👍
I grew up watching Bob Backlund as a champion and it was hard seeing him as a heel. But, I was glad to see him come back. I'm glad other people enjoy him now too. Even if it's for different reasons!
ITS AMAZING HOW HEALTHY AND VIBRANT BOB BACKLUND IS FOR A GUY WHO WAS WRESTLING WAY BACK IN THE 70S AND HES STILL HEALTHIER TODAY THAN ALL THE WRESTLERS FROM THE 80’s AND EARLY 90s MOST OF WHICH ARE DEAD NOW AND BOB IS STILL RUNNING AROUND LIKE HES 30 YEARS OLD
Thank you so much for making this. I love this type of content. Excellent work brah! 🤙🏼
15:04 What do you think of Backlund for Special Exemption Boy Status?
You review the Hulkamania Era and beyond so boyhood could be granted. Anything pre-1984 should be excluded. Good enough excuse?
Do it
Totally agreed. Backlund is a different kind of boy, he is the "champion boy". Six years as a champion gives him a greater value to being chosen as the only exception.
Boy status? Absolutely not.
Its tough because its like putting him with likes of Jinder, Zighler, Khali, and Swagger in that catagory. I say no because he was a 6 year champion and even though it was a territory, he was still a draw there. Plus i dont think his new gen run could qualify him as boy material because everyone like this gimmick. It has to be awful to considered boy material and bob has none of that
I think I can speak for all of us that when we see an upload we always want
Mo
I was a kid, like 9 when Bob made his comeback. It was my first exposure to him, but I remember they made the point that it wasnt his first go-round.
That man, that move, those eyes, the whole staring at his hands gimmick. Scared the ever loving shit out out of me as a kid...
...the presidential run....not so much....
The way he speaks so highly of VJM, it makes me think he didn't 'approve' of VKM's creative direction.
That outro song. Whatever you paid that guy: worth it.
Just now realized Jericho must have been inspired by this Bob Backlund heel turn
Backlund has been a meme in OSW for so long (And understandably so) that tbh I was super worried you guys would write off his amazing heel schtick and just laugh it off because "He's only duck arse, he's nothing else". Glad to see he gets the recognition he deserves for being a bright light in the New Era who got fucked over unbelievably so
Loved Mr Backlund, basically a proto type for the character of Kurt Angle in the attitude era. Fun fact from what I've read is orginally the plan for it was supposed to be a revelation that Backlund wasn't himself when he was killing people with the chicken wing, but was being controlled by everyone's favorite voodoo priest Papa Shango, hence why Backlund looked at his hands stunned after making people submit.
Here's to Bob Backlund. Cheers mate 🍾
"And I think history has shown Vince to have been right..." - Until everyone started chanting affirmations at the five-foot-five hippy with the beard, sure. What is Daniel Bryan but a less-manic Bob Backlund?
Junior Sanchez couldn't agree more. I couldn't care less about his size, I just think he's bland. Shit character shit finisher
OSW's best retrospective, hands down.
Is this now the "Bob Backlund Arc"? 😂
It is now
Well Luger is off to WCW after Wrestlemania.
Maybe boys who become champions can be called lads?
I would agree with that
@@dolandarkxgrandayy6953 sounds like a good drinking stable tbh
Bob backlund might be my favorite underrated world champion now after seeing his 94 run shame it never got to be even better
The main thing that comes striaght to my head when i think of Bob Backland is that he has never eaten maijuana
Just fucking imagine Backlund sticking around til late ‘96-‘97 to have a feud with Steve Austin, the promos would’ve been brilliant.
Best UA-cam channel
That artwork at the beginning is AWESOME
I absolutely believe without a shadow of a doubt that bob backlund is batshit insane
This all really gives me a new appreciate for Duck Arse. What a great heel he was.
The all American boy. His spot at Rumble 2000: amazing.
2 wrestlers I'd thought I would never like (lex and backLund) are now in my top 5, what are you doing to me osw
This video was great! Thanks.
Should have been champ to the rumble and then put diesel over. Wwe and blowing it go hand in hand
Great video, very comprehensive . I'm sure ol' Duck arse himself would love it
10:05 x-Pac had a funny line about this on his timeline 1994 shoot for kayfabe commentaries
“He’s still selling that Jackknife to this day”
I remembering hating him as a kid, but now, watching his work, Bob is a genius.
BRUH, I NEVER THOUGHT I'D SEE DANKMUS AND OSW TOGETHER

Top form as usual
This makes the Backlund references in the Kevin Nash's PCS Tournament during his TNA stint make sense.
Love the artwork
I met Backlund when he was running for the House of Representatives in Connecticut. Really really nice guy 👍
WHAT A GREAT COMEBACKLUND HE MADE!
I don't know why I didn't think of this before (multiple watches of this). So Raven (as Johnny Polo) would travel with Bob Backlund. He said Bob would sit in the back of their car and pull out a dictionary AND one of those talk back dictionary things and would learn new words the whole trip and try to use them on tv. He also said he enjoyed traveling with Bob, because Bob would just buy random things at Gas Stations and buy cases of beer and drink them alone in his hotel room
This is awesome.
This was very well done and good on you brah's for giving Bob his due.. can's of coke all around
Vince's eye roll is fucking hilarious.
We need a Sports Education shirt. I would buy that in a heartbeat.
The song!😂 i never eat mar-a-wanna! 😂
AWSOME!
I feel like Vince based the Mr. Backlund character (even if subconsciously) on Vince Sr. and his ideals, like that talking down character is how he saw his father. Reversely, Vince. Sr. may have picked Backlund as the face of WWF as an ideal "son" figure, like that boyscout character, and maybe Vince Jr. resented him for it ie. not supporting Backlund after letting him go. Am I over thinking it?
Some of y’all may not believe it but my great uncle is bob Backlund he’s pretty cool , every time I seen him at family reunions he’d always bring cool gifts
Its like Backlund was an actual Villain. Bret at the time was the Ultimate face. His madness build up to this was amazing. idk how they could ever truly do this again.
Best . Video. Ever. I freaggin loooooved buckland bak n the day. His chicken wing hold still scares me till today.
Backlund, be he clean cut Howdy Doody or crazy old man, still wrestled the same. Have you seen his UWF stuff? He’s doing worked shoots while Duck arsing across the ring. Takada is throwing Thai kicks and open hand slaps and Backlund is still full Duck Arse. Only thing he changed was making his holds tighter and more painful looking.
I was in the 6th grade when Backlund had his ‘94 “run”. He was so over with all of us kids. We really thought he was crazy. 😂😂
I honestly didn't appreciate Backlund when I was a kid but looking back now he is fantastic in the psychology department, something a lot of wrestlers are missing now a days
The massive attack soundtrack is class.
Thank you mate! For some reason it was fine to use here but blocked on the Series episode (so it had to be cut). Go figure 😂
You gotta release that Backlund music video as a highlight! 🤣🤣🤣
