Columbo could never be recast, Peter Falk brought something to the role, that no one else could or ever would do, a class act all the way. REST IN PEACE Mr. FALK. You are truly missed.

In the documentary about the show the writers said that they didn't write in most of the Columbo mannerisms and turns of phrase, that was all Falk doing his own thing. In fact, they had to instruct new writers not to write any of that into the script, because then it would be too much

The sight of the priest at the mock-funeral made me think of Columbo as a priest in a raincoat - he takes confessions, he doesn't judge, he sees through human pretence and dishonesty and, in this episode, he turns the other cheek. The Father Brown character created by GK Chesterton was a priest and amateur detective whereas Columbo is a detective and amateur priest. He hates the sin but loves the sinner.

The murderess was cheated out of her satisfaction, which is why she slapped Colombo. He fiddled around with her, as she was "confessing" to him about her crimes. She even looked sickened when Colombo revealed that she was at a mock funeral.
