End of The Line Episode 3" The second half begins".

- This episode starts the second half of Duty 603, with in and out of Wembley Park sidings before setting off for Stratford. I wave goodbye to the railway children of Willesden Green and encounter more delays !
Nice to see you wave at the kids on the bridge. As a child, my brother and me always waved at the steam crews racing through Slough in the 1950s. Always said "thank you" at the end of any trip into Paddington as well. Still do to bus drivers.
Thanks, they stand there waving away and getting excited, I like to see it and waving back just seems right 👍👍
Anywhere outside London it's etiquette to thank bus drivers when getting off. I guess in London you often exit via the rear doors so don't get a chance.
@@benbrist I allways say hallo to my busdrivers (ive had the same 20 odd for 10 years now so i do know them all by name and we allways chat) but even when i dont know them i allways say hello and goodbye. allthough there are verry few rotten apples, i do know them and whell, they don't get them hello. (i don't judge them, its based on travel expriences and what i hear from the other drivers.)
Well earned retirement! Hope you will be able to spend all this time now with your family and still doing things you love ❤
Thanks, that’s exactly what I’m doing and will continue to do so 👍👍
I find these videos so fascinating being with the driver on the journey with delays its amazing!
Glad you like them! Thank you 👍
Another fascinating installment, I imagine the mental concentration required must have been very tiring at times, staying alert etc. Thanks for posting this, very well executed!😊
Thank you for your nice comment and your observation. Yes your imagination is spot on maintaining that mental concentration is probably the hardest and tiring part of the job, especially in the height of summer when it get extremely hot in the deep tunnels, and the cab air con struggles to work! 👍👍
What a fabulous view your 'office' provided from time to time. I imagine you'll miss those crisp mornings with a clear blue sky, or those clear evenings when the lights of the city twinkle as you approach?
Thank you , yes some of the views were nice, sunrise is for sure my favourite time of day.👍👍
Enjoy your retirement, thank you for these excellent insights . Happy days and good health . 👍☕
Thank you, I’m pleased you’re enjoying them. I’ll do my on both counts 👍🤞
Enjoy your well earned retirement, these videos are great you’ve uploaded thank you, I’ve always enjoyed travelling and been fascinated by the underground system in London.
Glad you like them. Thanks for your nice comment and best wishes 👍👍
Thanks for sharing these runs, especially the last ‘terminating at….’
Good luck and good health in your retirement.
Thank you, it’s been a pleasure 👍👍
I really like the Underground, just really nice. Train driving doesn't feel like a job, it feels like the best thing to do ever! I want to be a Elizabeth Line or London Overground driver when I become a adult. Maybe it'll happen 😅
Thank you, yes a good job for sure. Best wishes for your future, whatever you decide to do when you become an adult 👍👍
loving the content mate! cant wait for more
Thank you so much, just over half way through 👍👍
Another excellent video and thanks for taking so much time and effort to do all this. As you headed west after renumbering to your step-back train, I thought to myself you’d have the dodgy cab seat again on the way back….. 😝
I must admit I’m in suspense for the next bit now - to see if you actually make it to Stratford 😳
Thanks Captain, I appreciate your appreciation of how much effort it’s taken, I don’t want to think about how many hours doing the duty was a lot simpler…but I’ve enjoyed it.
Do I keep my promise? And do I have to go in and out of Wembley sidings?…….🤔🤔🤞🤞
Thank you for your years of service
Thank you, it’s been a pleasure 👍👍
Well done Paul, and good luck with your next adventure.
Greetings from Portland, Oregon, USA.
I was born in Kingsbury, NW9, and Queensbury on the Bakerloo was our local.
So much has changed, or has it?
No more 1938 Tube Stock. And so has your profession thanks to ATO.
Best wishes!
Thank you so much for your comment and your kind wishes.
Portland , Oregon sounds so far from Kingsbury, I do believe the Jubilee line evolved from the Bakerloo line. Take care 👍👍
I remember having a cab ride on the Jubilee line and really enjoyed it. Such an interesting experience
Thanks for watching, I hope it reminded you of that cab ride👍. While planning this I referred to it as the cab ride my grandchildren are too young for at the moment👍👍
@@itsjustanidea Yeah, it really did brought back memories for sure!
When I was driving on the Northern line in the 1970's we used to have to use Golders Green for turn rounds. It was just under the hour for Golders Green to Kennington and round the loop, some turns you did 4 rounders by the third you didn't know if you were on the second/third or four round. Sole destroying! One Saturday turn out of Golders Green you did 7 of the buggers, needless to say not very popular.
Thanks for watching and commenting. My instructor operator back when I started began his career on the Northern Line and he had quite a few stories about that Kennington loop.!!👍👍
You have a nice job sir. Wish you the best with your retirement. I really enjoyed your video
Thanks I’m pleased you enjoyed it and thanks again for your best wishes 👍👍
Another great vlog hope you are enjoying retirement look forward to part 4 🎉
Thank you , I’m pleased you’re enjoying the series 👍👍
Great Video! 👍🤟
Glad you liked it!! Thanks 👍
LOVE it! 😃 You have VERY good ideas, indeed. 😎
Thank you, not all of them turn out to be🤣🍀🤞
I can remember training as a guard on the Met back in ‘85, England were playing Scotland at Wembley if memory serves, the Scots were running across the tracks, it was chaos, 38 years later, I’m still on the job.
Thank you, I’ve been saying my 22 years wasn’t much and your proof of that!!
I was working on the euro 2020 final and I can honestly say it was my worst experience in my 22 years!!👍👍👍
@@itsjustanidea good luck to you chap for your retirement. I can’t afford to go yet , but I still like the job, so hoping to get at least 40 years in, God willing.
I was assessed by a driver manager with 49 years of service earlier this week. Incredible.@@TheTraindriver85
Well done, good work
Thank you so much 👍
An excellent video 💙, nothing else to say
Thanks for your kind comment 👍
Great vid mate I'm keeping up with the series
Thanks, a couple more episodes of this last day driving or not driving to come👍👍
I also now see how you have identical door panels to left and right of the monitors 😊
👍
Wow they just keep getting better!
Thank you very much, that’s kind of you to say so👍👍
I can just see the metropolitan line train also arriving at the same time as your train at Wembley Park
No it wasn’t a dead heat, I won🤣
Great video mate.
Glad you enjoyed it, thank you 👍👍
Congratulations on your retirement! May your future be happy.
@5:44 I've never noticed the Roundel on the shelve of your jacket before.
Thank you for your comment and good wishes, the Roundel is pretty much on everything!😃👍
Why does the Jubilee Line stock make that satisfying sound? Love it.
Thank you for watching. There’s a good video on UA-cam called Why do Jubilee Line trains make that noise? On a channel called Jago Hazzard that explains that noise .👍👍
Are there any other tube driver vlogs like this, I could watch this over and over!
Thanks for watching, I’ve not seen any I’m sorry, but there will be 2 more parts to come 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea Thanks so much :)
Has anyone ever put more energy into saying “W i l l s den Green”. 😂 it’s amazing how familiar all these sounds are, yet when viewed like this, you see (or hear!) in a different way
Thank you and yes from your previous comment, two sets of buttons to control the doors 👍👍
G'day from Victoria Australia.
Very extremely interesting video.
I have kinda worked a little on and off on railways over here and was thinking about getting into driving but too much of a headache to deal with suburban network here.
My goodness i never knew the rolling stock you fellas have is so sophisticated. Just push buttons and the train starts and stops itself and you just watch and open and close the doors and try keep to the time table and whatever else.
Alot less hands on to years ago.
Congratulations on the a fantastic video and for the many many years on the job and your retirement.
Thank you, if I had lived in Australia, I’d have never been a train operator or anything come to that. I’d have had too much trouble dragging myself off of a beach !!! 👍👍👍
@@itsjustanidea 🤣🤣🤣 Oh gooodness
I'm not much of a beach person at all but summer times can be a good if your a single man HAHAHA.
I knew a girl that moved from the UK with her family and loved the beach also but i did warn her if she isn't careful she would definitely end up looking like a very sore and sorry lobster 🤣
From America, Congratulations and enjoy your retirement. Why is it so dark in the underground. Was it the camera or are the lights on the head end just not bright?
Curved tunnels, probably not enough room for tunnel lights like we have here in the States.
Thanks America, I’m enjoying retirement a lot!
If I had pointed that camera downwards you would have seen that the headlights on the train illuminated the track really well. Not as dark as it appeared 👍👍
3:08 look at that it’s a race between this metropolitan line train on the left and your own train on your right
🤣🤣 Railway olympics , the Neasden to Wembley Park sprint 🤣🤣
I’m going to do the Jubilee line soon , in your honour and dedicate my journey on Facebook to all the wonderful drivers on the UndergrounD
I hope you enjoy it and yes, those that I worked with are a good group of people 👍👍
another great video I wish other tube divers would do UA-cam videos, what would happen if the auto stopped working how would you know when to go or stop et as I haven’t seen many signals
There's in-cab signalling so you follow that. Alternatively, there are procedures to continue at low speed if that goes as well.
Thank you very much, in the event of a total failure of the ATO system there are procedures that enable trains to m moved safely and as has been described when being driven manually the signaling is all in cab via a monitor and audible warnings perfectly safe.👍👍
If ATO failed, you can drive in protected manual mode not a problem at all. It's all in cab signaling.
Interesting that on a line with such a very high service frequency there is still reference to 'late' trains. I take it this is a crewing issue rather than a passenger service issue?
Ah! I’d have to say no, there are a number of reasons for late running and to be honest the only time crew issues come into play is after a severe delay and late meal reliefs happen.
Thanks for your question 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea Interesting. Are we now looking at a 90 second or two minute separation of trains running under automatic operation?
@@richard_wenner yep 2 mins👍
@@itsjustanidea Impressive. What was it when you began driving?
@@richard_wenner I’m sorry but I honestly can’t remember probably something like 3minutes. There were some big productivity improvements during my time, from 6 to 7 cars, extra trains and at least 2 jumps in frequency 👍👍
Great video sir. When you applied to TFL did you get to choose the line you drive or do they allocate it themselves ?
Thank you, I’m pleased you enjoyed it.
When I joined London Underground they chose which line and depot I would work from, they put me where they needed operators, which was Wembley Park on the Jubilee line. Once employed I was able to nominate a depot and line of my choice and get on a waiting list.
I was happy with the line but as I lived nearer the North Greenwich depot ( Stratford didn’t exist at the time) I joined that waiting list and it took over two years to get there.👍👍
Lovely video, I really enjoyed that. I hope you have a great retirement. I've only just started my career as a mainline driver so plenty of miles ahead of me yet. What does the sound ay 33:31 mean?
Thank you, I’m pleased you enjoyed it and I wish you a long and great career driving those grown up trains 😃🤣. I’ve just checked and I think the noise your referring to is what happens when we key in ( switch the train back on) I had to close down to detrain 👍👍
Big up jabz from
Wembley Park massive
Thanks, 👍👍
Congrats! Just a question, what are two extra steel lines on rails used for?
Thank you, I’m not quite sure where you mean but there are two running rails, the positive and negative rails and in some places what they call check rails 👍👍
Lovely video Paul enjoy retirement
Thanks and I intend to enjoy every second of it 🤞🍀🤞👍👍
Thanks for making these videos.
It's a shame that you have skipped the tunnels from North Greenwich to Green Park, in the first two trips. I was kind of hoping I'd be able to see behind the Platform Edge Doors on the Jubilee Line Extensiion. I was also hoping you might point out the JLE transition to the 1979 line, as well as the transition from Baker Street to what used to be the Baker Loo line. Those are the things I've looked for out of the windows and they are always too hard to spot for me.
Thank you for watching my videos.
I’m sorry about that, it was meant to be but this was my first attempt at editing and I messed up.
I might try and make a couple more videos talking about my underground career and use that footage, once again I’m sorry 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea I'd love to hear all about it, from your first shift through to when you used to drive the trains, any unusual things that happened and how it felt when the automation came in. I bet there are so many stories to tell.
@@james-5560 I'll see what I can do 👍👍
We have seen you happily running DOO here (so if you can tell us) - why is there still resistance to this elsewhere across the UK? (Can't offer you a 'safe house" sorry :) )
Thank you , but I’m sorry I don’t know what DOO is and I’m a bit worried about why I’d need a safe house! 🤣 👍👍
@@itsjustanidea Driver Only Operation and the safe house would be for you if other drivers were to disagree. :)
@@richard_wenner oh yes , that was brought in before I joined, I think it was part of what’s called the company plan and I think there was strong resistance, but it’s what it is now .👍👍
What happens if the train overshoots the station
Good question, it does happen but rarely and there are a number of options/ procedures to follow when it does happen , depending on location and how far the train over runs. 👍
yeah mate great job how long you been working
Thank you, almost 22 years👍
@@itsjustanideaje that’s long enjoy your retirement
@@Bve542 I will thanks 👍
yep@@itsjustanidea
have you been on any other lines@@itsjustanidea
3:09 Underground Race
🏆🏅🏁
Jubilee line mostly always wins, the Metropolitan line trains don't move off as fast
Is the Jubilee line measured in MPH for speed limits?
Thank you, yes it is MPH 👍
yay
Thanks 👍
what is the deal with that signal at neasden?
The signal at Neasden? I honestly can’t remember. I’ll go back and have a look 👍👍
Talk about issues such as why the train service is getting worse, who is taking all the billions out of the train services, why so many people get away with not paying for tickets.
Thanks for watching and commenting but I’m not so sure that the service on London Underground has got worse. And I couldn’t get my hands on any of those billions so I’m not really interested in talking about any of that.👍👍
There is many issues which can cause delays. signaling problems, platform screen door issues, faulty trains etc. Most of the time things do go just fine
@@Matty12333 That's the problem. There are multiple points of failure. Why do we keep getting door issues or signal issues. The unions are against any automation. Go to China or Japan and they have excellent train service.
Are you doing more
Thank you, definitely two more. 👍👍
Fantastic
7:06 what does this sound mean?
That’s the audible signal to tell us we can close the doors and depart 👍
@@itsjustanidea Thank you for responding.
Why this train stopped?🤔
Indeed, why? My favourite question 👍
@@itsjustanidea tell me now!😡
@@Barzy-s9t 🤣🤣👍
So with ATO, can the computer not catch up any time? By driving faster? As I use this line a lot as I love the Jubilee Line, I love the 1996 stock due to the F1 motor sounds, although the sound has changed a little bit since ATO I think, I seem to realise the trains go faster when they are late. Did you ever get turned short at Green Park? And go to Charring Cross.
Every section of track has a maximum speed limit. The signalling system can provide a target speed anywhere up to that, some sections are always run fast, others given a lower target speed when on time or to regulate the service with a higher speed given when late
Thank you @projiuk answered the ATO part of your question 👍 and yes I’ve been to Charring Cross many times 👍👍
Depends on what's happening with the train ahead. If there is trains ahead of you, you can't go as fast. The good thing about the ATO system is it allows trains to run faster and closer together than fixed signals
