Man I'm stoked you have strong, positive feelings for this unfortunately obscure, yet masterful fragrance! Gem to me is like if Mitsuko and Youth Dew had a baby and named it Gem. I have a vintage mini parfum of Gem that is surprisingly intact that i received as an add on to a purchase of several different vintage mini fragrances and oh man it was love and i mean LOVE the moment i smelled it! It is so well blended but due to the quality of naturals involved it is fairly easy to grasp the individual components and they all play like a Beethoven composition. Another famed jewelry house, Cartier, introduced their classic fragrance created by the master himself Alberto Morillas the following year in 87 and that is Panthere. Cartier took their fragrance in a decidedly more feminine direction with pronounced white florals (one of just a handful of perfumes to utilize Karo-Korund) however, there are definitely commonalities between the two, mainly in their bases. The use of spices and furry animalics was almost a given in fragrancesat that time. Gem is such a work of art and no doubt, at least to me anyway, a unisex frag. Thanks for posting these in depth and comprehensive reviews on perfumes that are pillars to what we assume today as modern perfumery! BTW. Mitsuko extrait is in my top three fragrances for life!

What a masterpiece of a video!! So much to take in and entertaining, lots to learn. Chypre orientals, orientals, chypre, oriental chypres, plums, peaches, Mitsouku the origin of a family tree, it all comes together and now can I distinguish the differences, much appreciated Rams! That bottle looks mahvelous! Van Cleef & Arpels history! Wow 🎉🎉🎉❤. Always been curious of First, can’t wait.

Ramsey! I got lucky and found two bottles of this - one the edt - and the other the gold framed bottle of the parfum (extrait?) - both for a really good price on ebay. I was worried they would turn out to be fakes - or were badly stored by previous owners and went off - but both smell divine to me - the right notes to my nose - and both last for ages! The bottles are absolutely to die for - so so gorgeous! I can't 100% swear that what I acquired are two authentics - I don't know how to authenticate this perfume - but I am quite content with what I got. I want to thank you - for raving about this exquisite scent - and for being the only influencer I know on youtube to review it! I totally trust your nose and have for a good long while now! Anyway - the bottles are exquisite and so is the juice in both - so no complaints at all. Vintage Gem is truly a gem!

A crystal clear drydown is certainly a rarity. Especially in an oriental style fragrance. Or a thicc girl? 🤣 But the comparisons with Femme makes me certain I'd enjoy it. Great review!

You would dig this one for sure, anything harkening back to femme with minute shades here and there to Mitsouku and Obsession is a winner 💪🐏

@@RamseytheRamThis year in fragrance might be finished around 10k subs, play with that I’d guess. The best years of fragrance and what elements make it better than any other year. That’s it is not necessarily the best top 3. A trend might be set in a year, making it more important than a year where people just improved on a recently popularised scent concept.

I have and love MDCI Chypre Palatin. My favorite AMBER fragrance. Yes its complex with strong Chypre facets.
You will find some for a reasonable price one day JT...just stay vigilant

Given that most great fragrances of the past borrowed ideas and inspirations from their predecessors and contemporaries, such as with Gem, doesn't that warrant a pass for houses like Roja Dove's? Or do you think what Roja does is different and deserving of more criticism, the pricing perhaps?
Well I have a love / hate relationship with Roja and have probably done more individual Roja reviews than any other UA-camr, and none of my bottles were "gifts" from the brand either
I actually like the house of Roja and wear them regularly and before this recent twist in the last few years I thought Roja was one of the best Niche houses out there because of that nod to the past.... but I think Roja flies a little to close to the sun if you know what I mean
I Still love things like Diaghilev, Fetish PH & Danger PH but the house has since moved away from making perfume like that unfortunately
@@RamseytheRam, valid criticisms, good things don't last I guess and greed and corporatism always ruins things.
Unless it's pure quality like Areej le Dore, Bortnikoff, Rogue, Papillion, Sultan Pasha, and the likes, that don't use a bunch of synthetics, I agree with you guys, for the prices these days, I'm probably done with newer stuff. I might have 50 samples of newer stuff and it took me a couple years to find out the vintage stuff was what I was looking for. Thanks Ram.

Yes it was reformulated at least once, in the early 90s put into a plain rectangular atomiser bottle and then later into a plain cylindrical bottle with really pale juice and discontinued sometime in mid-2000s.
This is one of my favourite evening at home perfumes in edt form... yes i have 30ml extrait, but guess what....still sealed and not sniffed it yet again 😂

I accidentally broke my Gem parfum few months back, I was in a state of trauma for a few days being a chypre guy and a big fan of that Jacques Guerlain and Roudnitska chypre structure. Yet to find another bottle……
I would have cried real tears of serious pain... I have never broken a bottle but I have broken Decants before and nearly cried myself to sleep
One of my workers broke an older la Fille de Berlin while cleaning. I personally broke a 90s mitsouko edt, which was my first vintage mitsouko few years back. Ran out of tears now haha.

This one reminds me a lot of Chanel No 22. That ylang ylang is so prominent to me.
Really I never thought of that... I get way more aldehydes and florals in No 22 without that Oriental base... but I really like No 22 as well 💪🐏

Omg I used to say I that there are so few perfumes I like. Gem and Coco were my go to perfumes.
They are two of my favorite made for women frags from the 1980s...also if you are into hunting vintages try Balahe from Leonard ... it is stunning

A friend muled it back from Japan .... Japan is filled with vintage perfume ... go look up a channel of that scalper eau d'Treasure... who buys frags from Japan for 50 bucks and sells em on ebay for 500... the wanker

It's just not influential enough in my mind to be up there with the opiums and Antaeus and Shalimars of the world .... but it's a damn good perfume... damn good 💪🐏
