Those definitely were the good times... Getting home after a full day of school and then watching the anime block on Toonami.... Good times.

I was so happy when they announced this. I can't watch at that hour unfortunately but am grateful to know it's going on. A couple of notes from me:
    1) Bruce faulconer score w/OG DBZ Funi Dub would be dope - but doubt it'll ever happen. Alas, we'll have to settle for our orange bricks, or the 4:3 steelbooks.
    2) I'd really like to see them start somewhere other than the very beginning. It's gonna take them a while to get past Frieza saga, even with the shortened Kai. I'd love to see them skip around a bit, but I guess that wouldn't work for a new fan who hasn't seen DBZ a million times lol
3)To go off my last point, some movie nights on Toonami or the rewind would be great. Ghibli or DBZ movies, really anything that they aired back then.

I actually really like that they're using Kai because it's still the old DBZ footage so it's still nostalgic, but the dub is what I consider to be the definitive DBZ localization due to its more faithful scripts and (IMO) much better acting. They're doing the same thing with Sailor Moon by using the Viz dub. Naruto already had a pretty faithful dub, but I believe they're airing it uncut with the Japanese openings from the start, so that's a nice bonus. So this block is striking a balance of nostalgic and modern by airing these older shows with recreations of the original bumpers but using modern localizations that are authentic to the original versions. I understand why some are disappointed, but to me that's the best of both worlds: the fun of the OG Toonami block except with higher quality dubs that I wish these shows had back in the day.

The best of both worlds is bringing back Tom 3/3.5 as host, and recycled Peter Cullen promo narration.

It really is well most of it though just right now Naruto or the people behind that part had just skipped episodes in that season and someone tried to pull a fast one or whatever shady is going on or some Internet outage but someone really needed checking on that part since it just went straight to the Exams here and now.

    Cw4kids/Toonzai/Vortexx also aired Dbz Kai.

I might be the only one against it, especially since we have Toonami Aftermath. I'm surprised nobody has shit that sure down.
Superman, Zom 100, and Naruto Shippuden are about to end so I hope Toonami has a real gameplan. Shippuden was the only thing worth watching during the latter part of the block considering everything else after are reruns. They are going to need more than a Ninja Kamui level anime, we don’t have reoccurring top tier animes like Attack on Titan anymore. There’s always a long wait time with My Hero Academia and Demon Slayer (after dropping elsewhere). Toonami Rewind should have been a 1hr block inside Toonami featuring classics like a Gundam series, Full Metal Alchemist, Inuyasha or Ghost in the Shell. That Friday block was meant to tug on the nostalgic heart strings of millennials who grew up with that but that audience is either getting off work, going to work, grocery shopping, going to the movies etc. during that time frame. Once the network feels that Toonami Rewind isn’t worth it, they are going to cut it and probably target Saturday night as well bringing Toonami to an end again. At least on Saturday night, Toonami was kind of hidden but the Friday afternoon time slot has put it in the limelight.
    Current Schedule
    - 12:00 AM - My Adventures with Superman (Watch - more so as background noise)
    - 12:30 AM - Zom 100: Bucket List of the Dead (Watch - Like this)
    - 1:00 AM - One Piece (Never a fan - ep from an anime box set or streaming anime)
    - 1:30 AM - Naruto: Shippuden (Watch - A fav)
    - 2:00 AM - Dragon Ball Z Kai (Gaming - Played out, already saw it)
    - 2:30 AM - Ninja Kamui (Gaming - Loved it, already saw it)
    - 3:00 AM - Demon Slayer (Gaming - Loved it, already saw it)
    Fantasy Block
    - 12:00 AM - Jujutsu Kaisen (or another fans suggestion)
    - 12:30 AM - Fairy Tail (or another fans suggestion)
    - 1:00 AM - One Piece (not a fan but I can respect it…keep for the fans)
    - 1:30 AM - Boruto (perfect Shippuden replacement)
    - 2:00 AM - Any mecha anime
    - 2:30 AM - Classic (Rewind Hour)
    - 3:00 AM - Classic (Rewind Hour)

Holy crap, I just did a deep dive on the Faulconer/Funi law suit... man, we will more than likely NEVER see the OG DBZ/Faulconer dub/score ever again on live TV.
It seems like anytime it airs, and/or possibly sells, FUNI owes Faulconer a royalty... that really sucks. I'm glad he got his, and I'm sure he lost a lot more but damn that sucks.

Another reason why they’re using Kai for DBZ instead of the original anime also has to do a little bit with Toriyama’s passing. Kai is the more faithful adaptation of Toriyama’s original work, and going with Kai is sort of honoring how he would’ve wanted it. While I did otherwise love and enjoyed the dub of the original anime, the excess amount of filler would be much to go through especially for newer fans.
And while the idea of the block is a good one, it’s mostly for those that want to have that nostalgic feeling they have of watching anime on cable tv. It’s in a losing battle of how it’s much easier and convenient to watch our favorite shows and movies on streaming, now.

They have been airing Kai on and off since 2014 on the Saturday block and it's most recent return was a week before his passing (two weeks before the news went public) so it's basically giving a show they already have broadcast rights for another time slot since it's still airing on Saturday nights.

Nostalgia elites aside , i actually like the idea and forgot the fact that DBZ kai , like certain other anime shonen or shojo of 2008s to 2015 , actually used the Japanese technique names. Makankosappo, Kienzai and rikko ha etc but loved the sailor moon viz media dub and was surprised that they actually acquired it after Jason demarco said it wasn't possible at the time. Yes it is testing the waters to see how it works .

Hulu had exclusivity rights for a long time, it was only recently when it started showing up at other places like Pluto, UA-cam & Crave.
Similar case with Sailor Moon Crystal which Demarco did want to get back when it was new but he was outbid.

@@NJ973201 understandable of course. But now crystal is on Netflix syndication, along with the eternal movies and cosmos films soon in August

So does Faulconer still get royalties for home video and streaming? Or, just airing it on TV?

  • @AziaXtremeNFinity

Wouldn't it be Crunchyroll that would have to pay Bruce Faulconer royalties since they own Funimation now?
