It does sound better, but often bands do this...even I've done it...where what you wrote sounds oddly familiar and it bothers you...so you start changing the pitch...then you start to convince yourself that it sounds better at a different tuning. A lot of times it an attempt at making sure the song isn't compared to another song somewhere in history.
