  • The choice of language for educating our children, and whether to switch languages as they progress through higher education, remains a perplexing issue for educators, nationalists, and policymakers. This seemingly straightforward question becomes increasingly complex in today’s post-colonial, digital, and globalized world. In multilingual and multicultural countries like India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, where numerous languages are spoken, each deeply tied to identity and culture, finding a solution requires careful consideration.
    Social activist and anthropology enthusiast Amjad Nazeer explores potential answers that balance the needs of parents, teachers, and linguistic nationalists while promoting rational, objective, and critical education.
    About the Speaker:
    Amjad Nazeer heads the Alternate Deployment Services, Islamabad. He is a social and public policy researcher as well as human and environmental rights defender. Currently enrolled in Ph.D Cultural Anthropology, he holds degrees in ‘Governance & Development Management (UK)’ and M.Phil. in ‘Human Rights Policy & Practice (Norway) and in Social Anthropology from Q.A.U. (Pakistan). He has produced a number of recognized research reports, booklets, op-eds, and news articles on various aspects of human cum environmental rights, minority rights, child rights, and education. Formerly, he has been associated with South Asia Partnership-Pakistan, Oxfam-Novib & Action Aid-Pakistan. His known works are: Education and Inequality, Single National Curriculum - A Critical Analysis, Education for All and International Financial Assistance (A Comparison of Bangladesh and Pakistan), Putting Education on Political Agenda, Siege of Multan - A Dramatic Retelling (Urdu), Arundhati Roy’s Ordinary Person’s Guide to the Empire (Urdu Translation), Local Governsment in Multan, Layyah and Bahawalpur etc.
    Drawing on his in-depth experience and understanding, he remains engaged in social research, delivering training, honorary lectures, talks and seminars in certain universities and on civil society platforms.

    I learned 4 languages from standard 5 to 9 in 2005 English,Hindi, gujarati, Sanskrit

    Unfortunately, Pakistan is a lost cause as far as education is concerned! Our leaders understood the importance of education at the time of our independence, the time of the birth of your country! 🇮🇳

      Not true. Learning and education is embedded in Hinduism. The only religion that literally worships knowledge.

    Noticed the Hindi on your blackboard.
    The popular expression would be शिक्षण माध्यम की पहेली (Shikshan madhyam ki paheli). Another could be Nirdesh ke madhyam ki paheli. Anudesh is not wrong but would normally not be used.

    Great content- in India we generally speak two languages and understand several others. As pointed out in the lecture, if you know more than one language, learning even more gets easier. Also, it has been shown that knowing several languages prevents dementia as the brain develops multiple synapses to process thoughts in different ways.

    We are still confused about the medium of education since the inception of our independence. Our primary education should be in provincial language or in Urdu but English should be taught as a second language. Only three other subjects such as math,science and drawing be introduced. This will provide foundation to the best and broader higher education. You can introduce history, geography, dinyat and some other subjects from 6th to 8th class to broaden the vision of a student. No teacher should be allowed to teach the class less than graduate of university. I have seen many BA pass clerk and technical diploma holders during my service who were unable to write a single sentence correctly.

    We need to have legislation under which private schools of any grade should be bound to hire teachers not less than graduate of university with additional qualification of teaching. Low grade schools be banned without any loss of time as they are creating only frustration and a lot of incapable.

    Subcontinent (Barr-eSaGirr) is called as Indian Sub-Continent.

      Exceptions doesn’t make them a fact. Yes the state boards use the state language as the medium of communication till high school but mostly all the higher education is in English, be it engineering, medical etc. I had so many people in my college who struggled in the first year because they had to switch to English for everything.

      Pakistan is a broken away part of India which will eventually come home -- why else would they always use India as benchmar, keep talking about India?. Even their "national language" Urdu is an indigenous Indian language, the language of the Muslim League leaders, "Pakistan AMU K londoon ne banaya", who demanded Pakistan.. Paki indegenous languages are Punjabi Pashto Sindhi Hindko Sirayeki and so on. 43:39

      ​​​@@ResponsibleCitizen001 Here the main question is are indian languages suitable for learning science or not?
      That's what they are trying to find out through comparing urdu and other indian languages. Regional language based schools are not exceptions.May be in some part of india they are assumed to inferior than english medium but that's not the truth.
      In my state West Bengal students can pursue their studies in 11th and 12th in bengali medium even general elective subjects (science field) are also available in our colleges.Even the bengali scientists who were involved in mission chandrayan-3 are mostly from bengali medium.So,stop saying inferior to regional medium schools.

Search kar le maximum college or university mai gradution or master both hindi or english mai hoti hai... Ye person ki choice hoti hai... Usko kisme study krni hai... Yes I agree every state mai different different rule or regulation honge..... But person ki choice hoti hai....
