Another well informative and insightful video. Prior to watching your video I was going to purchase the Hottop. But I was quickly discouraged when you said it takes approximately two hours and 5 batches to make the pound of coffee. Although I do agree that it’s a good rroster for beginners. I just don’t think 2 hours and 5 batches for 1 pound is feasible for a start up business.
@@BLKCITYCOFFEEROASTERS wouldn't you just roast 250g at a time like most of the hot top roasters that are on the forums? Then it would be only two roasts for a pound. That is how I was thinking I would use this roaster if I buy it. Do you think that you would just buy the less expensive one now with your current knowledge? It seems like the features of the plus are not necessarily useful for the way you are using it with handwriting the info etc. I know a lot of people like the more manual approach of the b model.
I've been using the HotTop + for 3 years at this point and have never had issues doing 240-250g roasts. This seems to be the common charge most roasters are using with the HotTop without problems.
Now that you have been on the MCR 1k for a while, would you suggest getting experience with something like the hottop roaster first before moving on to something bigger? I've been using a Barwell for a while and want to get more serious
I’d say if you have the budget, go for the machine or a similar machine that is closest to what you really want to roast on. It’s like buying the cheap one when you know you can afford the better one. Just go for it if you know you’re going to be serious.
Hey! Enjoying your videos. I went from discussing home roasting with my GF (We're both coffee lovers...) yesterday, to watching your first video last night... Then, this morning, watching Mill City's video discussing airflow (I think they do a decent job breaking down airflow... ua-cam.com/video/TjVas7jbOUI/v-deo.html) and finding you uploaded an update today! I feel like you are helping me jump into this. You also started this video mentioning Mill City's 1kg machine... I think you've done the work to deserve it! So proud! I am considering the Hot Top! Question1: Can you automate the airflow functions? Both Mill City and you suggest multiple airflow changes throughout the roast. Question2: Where do you get your green beans? Question3: What do you think about fair trade coffee? (I may have more questions. I know you don't consider yourself an expert and you reference Mill City but, I am considering you my upperclassman!) Thanks!
Yep the airflow one is aces. #1: I think you can automate, but I'm not familiar with it. It has something called profiles. I like the manual control better. #2: I currently get my green beans from Bodhi Leaf. #3: Fair trade is, on the surface a great thing (I'm not confidently well-read on the subject). However, I wonder why there are only Fair Trade labels for Robusta and Arabica beans...could be worth some research. And thanks for watching. I'm sure we can all learn from any class-standing:)
Good luck with the new roaster. I am just starting out roasting myself. I went with the Kaldi Fortis as my first roaster. I wanted to roast with gas, and I wanted to be able to do a legit 1lb. I also considered the Aillio R1 Bullet roaster, but I wanted to use a gas setup, not electric. Have you looked at these and other 1KGm +/- roasters?
Hi there, thanks for your great review is this USB mode required to use this machine or I can just rost like directly with the electricity without using the smart mode?
Hi I ve juste discover our channel.. II ve seen you have upgrade to Mill Roaster... .. but... with Hottop, do you think to roast 20kg per month .. or it s very diffucult to work with it ?
The Mill City roaster will be a fabulous investment to get you ready for your Probat. May I suggest you connect with realchrisbaca or Real Chris Baca. He owns a couple roasting locations in Santa Cruz. I am sure he would love to speak and advise with you. My connection to the roasting world was a retired aviation engineer who took over his father's roasting business here in Salt lake City. Starnes Distributing or Star Mountain Coffee has Sam at the helm, daughter Susan runs the office and son in law Steve helps with roasting and deliveries. I used to buy roast beans from him and then bought raw beans from him as well. I now prefer Sweet Maria's as the give you cupping analysis on each of their selections. Great wealth of info. Sam showed my his process. The gas fired roaster I believe is 18 kg and he has a commercial hot air roaster which will produce 150 kg/hr. They have a blending and bagging device which bags 10,000 lbs/hr. Sam said with their volume the bagger only runs 15 min a day.
Great information. Thank you! The airbnb coffee idea sounds great! I have never roasted but would be interested.
Hey thanks for making these videos! They’re super informative and helpful.
Np:)
hey this is excellent infor however it always good to show the points you are highlighting thru real roasting process, indicating the roasting points
I appreciate that!

If it makes any difference i got it down to 4 batches at 140g in 1 hour = 1lb of roasted coffee. 🤓

Would you consider doing a video on coffee origins and how you choose green coffee to roast?
Most definitely!

I recently just purchased the mill city 1kilo and that’s gas so I’m super excited about that!

Yes you can

20kg with a hottop? Yea that would be difficult.
