Mr. Hand and Myself shared a lot of the same air. Definitely cool. The Balkans might not have been Iraq/Afghanistan crazy, but it was basically the only game in the town at the time. Then if and when you make that you may get the opportunity to try out for sofd-d. But until then stay healthy stay in shape and stay out of trouble. Most unit guys are in their mid 30's

So before BRAC in 1995 Fort McCellan was the home of the Army Chemical Warfare School. They had a special chemical warfare lab out in the back 40. There they could train with live agent in small quantities. It was all very controlled. It was convenient since Anniston Army Depot was just a few miles away and housed large stocks of GB, VX, and HD.
After is was closed in 95 the facility was taken over by the CDP. Center for Domestic Preparedness. They operate the Chem Lab, and provide training for various disciplines tailored to LE, EMS, Fire, and Medical professionals.
I’ve been there twice. And through the Chem Lab both times. They bring in GB and VX so you can use different types of test equipment to confirm the presence of it. Pretty interesting training.
We did one exercise in full gear where the temps were only in the mid 80’s. When I pulled off my Tyvek coveralls and all my sweat poured out on the floor there was a puddle about 5 feet around. The only thing that allowed us to last as long as we did was the combination of being on air, not sucking a filter, and getting hosed down as we were dragging dummies through an emergency Decon station on the way to technical decon.
We found out that when it comes to rehab after coming out of suits you could give an operator an IV to try and rehydrate them. But you can only give so much before you can put a person into shock by watering their blood down.

The plan changed because of the intel reports of sea mines along 900 miles of the beach coastline . So the assault from the sea was canned. The new plan was to sail to Italy to load our the lavs and cat platoons humvees on c17s. We were aware of the subterranean complex with possible chemical weapons threat . 2/2 fox company was going to secure the airport for the c17s to land . Lar platoon and cat were to push towards entrance of the subterranean complex. Naturally the op got called off entirely from higher .We continued to sail around the mediterranean for the 11months .
