I miss you Mrs Phyllis you taught when you cooked so that we could do it for our families. I still watch cooking shows but you’re the best by far. I love you and Mr Bucky.
I sometimes watch cooking shows on TV, but these SouthernFrugal are closer to the average person kind of cooking & I like that. Some shows have all exotic expensive appliances & may look great for advertising but I don't need all that.
Hi Phyllis! I'm Kade. 17, and I'm in the south too. NC. I'd like to say that your videos are very nice, I'm Homeschooled and thanks to you I've learned so many nice recipes and I cook a lot for my family, and they love ever meal I cook for them. they've raised me very well and I've noticed a lot of what you talk about has also applied to my upbringing. So hey, I respect y'all a lot and thanks for the great food :) keep the great videos coming!
I lived at Buckroe beach from 1956 till 1967. I live in Ohio now happy we can find Smithfield hams here. They bring back lots of Virginia memories. Love to hear stories you tell about Virginia. My dad worked at the shipyard too.
What a lovely memory to get to revisit...Miz Phyllis making a delicious ham and I could just imagine the lovely smell in her kitchen. I'm grateful we have these sweet memories of her.
I learn from mother how to this ham. My mother used whole cloves. I am going to try the ground cloves the next time bake a ham. Dinner looks delicious. Thank you for reminding of a fond memory.:)
Smithfield! You rule, girl! I'm a proud Virginian who's lived in Virginia for most of my life and now I'm living in Smithfield. Keep up the great videos!! :-)
I love your Channel !! I was born in 1955 . We always buy Smithfield ham , popular here in Ohio . So sad that the generations now can never live the way we did , breaks my heart .
Hi Miss Phyllis! I am a young mother with 3 children, and watching your videos made me think to explain to my 9 year old daughter that we need to cherish the people in our life that know about the way things used to be. There were so many things I didn't get to ask my grandmother before she passed, and so I try to glean as much as I can from the older people I can find. I've always thought that I had an older soul, and I used to love hearing about the way things used to be. I thought you and Mr. Buckey might like this website that I found that is basically an online archive of an old journal that used to be put out. It's all stories, recipes, and history about people from the Blue Ridge Mountain area in South Carolina. Just google "the mountain laurel journal." I think some of the stories date to around the time your parents would have been children. Anyways, I just thought y'all might enjoy that like I do. Can't wait to see more in the '50's series!
One of my favorite things my mom would cook was baked ham. We usually only had it around holidays. She didn't like turkey so we didn't have that as often. But I love ham and it makes me think of my mom always. Thanks Miss Phyllis I love your channel.
To cut a ham like this: Turn the ham so the bone is toward the bottom with the exposed bone end facing right and with the fleshier side up. Slice down to the bone however thick you like your slices. Turn your knife parallel to the bone and slice sideways as close as you can to the bone. The slices will come free and you will have perfect ham slices. If the ham is already spiral sliced, turn the ham so the bone you can see is on the bottom and the fleshier side of the ham is to your right. Slice straight down the bone on the right hand side, and the spiral slices will come free. You might need to cut a thin slice from the spiral slices on the side that was next to the bone as they will be connected, like a spring.
Ms. Phyllis, I am a new subscriber and am really enjoying your videos on 1950's cooking/meals. Thank you for sharing your memories with us and keep them coming!
My mom made ham like that. Reminds me of Christmas and Easter Dinner. She also put cherries in the middle of the pineapple rings, I loved to eat the that baked fruit . This video has made me so hungry! I like everything you made.
Great meal! We grew our own hogs and smoked our meats with good results while I was growing up on the farm. Smithfield is the only ham that tastes good enough to make me think of those meals we had of that home grown pork and smoked hams and other pork. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Phyllis, for posting this. It brings back fond Sunday dinners from growing up in the 70's. My father made a wonderful honey - mustard glaze, using local honey and Dijon mustard!
I'm new too and really appreciate your efforts in recording and providing us with such a variety of useful info. Thank you Miss Phyllis! I'm working my way through them and enjoy you and the Mr. so much.
I don't remember my Mom cooking ham, but my Grandma's ham was a treat. Her Easter dinner was so good. She didn't use Smithfield ham (we lived in Ohio, and for a long time the Smithfield hams were only available to their locale.....sad) but, whatever she used, turned out great. I only learned her cooking secrets when I was in High School...and still use some of them. Thank you for another 1950s cooking memory, Phyllis...
Dear Phyllis, I just wanted to say how much I love and appreciate your videos. I've been watching them for a few years now and I just love hearing all your wonderful stories and listening to the advice and tips you so generously share. I am from Virginia (though I no longer live there) and I lost my mother, so watching you is very comforting. I particularly love the 50's meal plans you make - I grew up in the 70's and 80's but love the 50's, so that is really fascinating to me. Thank you again :) x
Yum! I usually made split pea soup with small diced pieces of ham,( no fat) then put bone in soup with chopped celery, a few onions, and add chopped carrots last half hour, then I freeze it in several containers! Love ham! Going to look for sales on Smithfield soon
Chinese are sole owners of Smithfield Foods now ( I live in Smithfield). I haven't seen any pig farms in Smithfield in the last 18 years but I understand the land my house sits on used to be a pig farm. I've seen so many wonderful recipes on your channel. Love the classic recipes.
It's Neenee Baby Smithfield also has major problems in how they treat their employees. I won't buy because of that either. And there's actually a plant not too far from me in Kentucky. I'm in WV and it's just down the highway. Not nice employers. It's a shame.
what is wrong with this country letting Chinese people buy our ham company like this. you know they can use biological warfare on Americans. they eat dogs in their country. if you don't see puts in Virginia then where are the hams coming from???!!
when I was in the six grade we took a trip to Florida. I'm from CT. this was early 70s. I loved the old south. I liked seeing the pigs in Virginia. I loved the accents and the houses the weather. .
I very much enjoyed your video! I was born and bred in Northern VA too 😊 you reminded me very much of my great grandma who passed away in the 90's. She was from the small town of Vesuvius, VA and was a very frugal lady who had a very similar cooking style. As an adult now, I only wished I paid more attention to her methods and "recipes". Thank you for sharing your love of cooking and stories of home. I had no idea VA grew peanuts, let alone fed them to pigs, lol! I find it pretty intriguing since we raised a pig or 2 when we lived in Catlett, VA which isn't too far from Smithfield, VA. Again, thank you for sharing. You just gained a new subscriber and am looking forward to watching more of your videos.
Thank you for sharing your mother's ham recipe. I am for sure going to make our next ham this way. Where hubby worked for a few years the employees would get a Christmas present of a Montana Valley Ham and we both swear it is the best ham we've ever eaten and I've tried to crack the code of how they make it with no luck. And at $50 a ham there is no way we're giving in to that kind of craving. Thank you also for the education on hams too, very interesting!
Hi Phylis, Sure hope you're feeling better, I too went to grandma's on the weekend for the best dinner I ever tasted. It was the highlight of my life when I was a little girl. My father didn't own a car and my mom didn't cook much and when she did, it wasn't with much effort so my uncle, who lived with grandma would come pick us up. Grandma had a big yard and I would have lots of room to play. What fond memories of grandma, grandpa, good food and fellowship. ha ha
I love the bone in hams! I do the pineapples with the marachino cherries on toothpicks n whole cloves. I use the ground cloves in the glaze of pineapple juice, cherry juice, brown sugar, honey n a pinch of cloves. I cook it down to a syrup then brush it on the ham every 10 minutes for the last 30-40 minutes of the baking time. Ugh... I can taste it now! We serve with au gratin potatoes n asparagus usually. I like the bone because then I will make either Yankee bean soup, 12 bean soup or split pea soup with it....yum yum!
Yes, yes, yes! I'm on the same page with you. My grandmother cooked a Smithfield ham this way, my mother does, and so do I. It's delicious! I'm from the eastern part of N.C. and we still cook like you do in your videos. Best wishes!
We have been cooking your 50's recipes the police station .....showing these kids how it was....Thank You .....Central Patrol Dallas Police Department!
Thank you so much for this comment, I am deeply flattered. We have the utmost respect for all the police in our country who risk their lives everyday to protect us. THANK YOU CENTRAL PATROL DALLAS POLICE DEPARTMENT.
Jennie Carver Mr Bucky passed away suddenly in July, pray for Miss Phyllis she had major surgery before he died & he had been caring for her. She has more procedures to have, but I feel she really needs us all to pray for her.
The whole meal looks so good and ham has always been one of my personal favorites. A bone in ham is a bit pricey but so worth it considering how many meals you get out of it , including the wonderful soups you can make with the ham bone. My mom always used to pour a can of RC cola over the ham and then bake it in the over on very low heat for a couple of hours. To this day I cant cook a ham without pouring a can of cola over it and baking it the same way
I make this on a regular bases but i have never used cloves. I never mixed honey with brown sugar always either or. So I am going to try your version next time. It looks really good! Thank you for the stories and the receipes. Love them!
From an Old retired meat cutter in Martinsville, VA., if a whole ham has had any center slices removed it can only be sold as a butt or shank portion. The whole ham would have had at least 3 inches of the center removed and sold as center cut slices. Look closely at what you're buying!
oh,Miss Phylis,I love you and your wisdom...rowing up I hated ham it always tasted like javex to me lol...but I have grown to kinda like it...now will try this recipe someday...
Ms Phyllis, I bought a ham very close like the one in this video, just last night. Your videos are needed on here, I was able to get mine in the oven after watching this. I cooked a lot years ago but now, not so much. Find there are some things I've forgotten...lol. Really enjoy these videos, thank you! 😀
i LIVED IN HAMPTON WHEN I WAS IN MY 20'S. MY HUSBAND AT THE TIME WAS IN THE ARMY AND WE LIVED IN A LOVELY OLD HOME. WE RENTED ONE SIDE OF THE HOME FROM AN ELDERLY LADY WHO LIVED IN THE OTHER PART OF THE HOUSE. WE SHARED A BATHROOM WHICH MEANT SHE HAD TO COME THROUGH OUR KITCHEN TO USE THE BATHROOM. LOL IT WAS ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL THERE.
Thank you Phyllis!! My honey picked up a ham and I hadn't made one in forever. Usually just ham steaks but thank you for the recipe. This is good for meals through out the week 🐰❤️🙏🏼😇
oh I can almost smell it. So delicious. I love your 1950s recipes. You have a wonderful channel. I'm so glad I found it! Can't wait for the next video. Thank you so much for sharing these recipes.
I m from Western Canada and this was a great video you made. Going to try it tomorrow, Thank you , right to the point and not wasting time showing any one,
@Phyllis: That looks delicious. Now I know why my ham is never right ... I dont tent it, i put on the glaze and pineapple in the begining and I cook it on too high of heat. I also never thought of making a ham gravy to go with. I appreciate this video and it makes me want to go get a butt-end Virginia ham and try it right away! I thought the large fork at the end was a great tip. Its good to know that other folks have difficulty slicing ham too! Thank you for sharing.
Smithfield is a great ham. I put maraschino cherries 🍒 on my ham with the pineapple 🍍. We didn’t have an Easter 🐣 Ham yesterday, now I’m going to have to make one. God bless you Phyllis. 🙏
Hello I'm a new sub also but I am loving your recepies from the 50 s I am from east Texas and your style cooking is so close to the way my mother and grandmother cooked and the way I also learned but I am so enjoying the stories and the receipes! Thank you so much for shareing!
Enjoyed many a boat ride with my brother and his family on the Pagen River in Smithfield. Probably got those peanuts from Suffolk, VA. I am from Portsmouth, VA and live in Colorado now. I really love hearing you talk about your time in Virginia
I showed everyone your reply and the guys wanted to let you know how much it meant to them ....they were really touched......as was I Thank You So Much for your support!
looks so delicious. I bought a Smithfield butt ham at walmart yesterday. as a retired meat cutter I have always been very fond of Smithfield Hams. but I wanted a prime rib roast. LOL. after I looked at the pricing on a rib roast, I chose the ham. Lol. thanks for your great recipe.
We used to buy Smithfield hams until we discovered the Fricks brand. They were so good my spouse said he didn't want another Smithfield in the house! LOL! This looks delicious and you'll certainly have lots of meals from it.
I remember my mom putting pineapple slices and maraschino cherries on the outside using whole cloves to hold the fruit on. Wow, that was a long time ago. We had a ham and a turkey for Thanksgiving at my grandmother's house. For Easter, we always had ham, but when I got older, we didn't have Easter dinners. Many years later, after grandma passed, my family was mostly Catholic/Philippine and we had turkey and ham and some other great dishes for Christmas. We all live in California.
P.S. You are so lucky to live in Virginia and live near the Smithfield Ham company. MMMMMM......they are great!!! We always have to order ours from there and have it shipped to us for the holidays.....
I miss you

Love virginia baked ham! :-)
I ordered a spiral cut and had it shipped to FL for my dad and my paternal grandparents and they loved it!
I remember watching Moma, my Grandma and my aunts preparing ham this way. Ham is so good. We only had it for special occasons.
This is exactly the same way my mother used to make hers, I now do mine the same way, I know this is good tasting ham. thank you for sharing.

My friend works at Smithfield here in NC. She is always getting Smithfield bacon and the hams lol. I love the spiral hams!
Smithfield is a great ham. I put maraschino cherries 🍒 on my ham with the pineapple 🍍. We didn’t have an Easter 🐣 Ham yesterday, now I’m going to have to make one. God bless you Phyllis. 🙏

looks so delicious.
Phyllis, my mother made the ham, best ham i ever had, and the sauce was wonderful, Thank You.
We used to buy Smithfield hams until we discovered the Fricks brand. They were so good my spouse said he didn't want another Smithfield in the house! LOL! This looks delicious and you'll certainly have lots of meals from it.
Iam so addicted to your channel!!! Love your cooking:) Thank you for posting!!
Awesome dinner... reminds me of my mom's Easter dinner 😋😋😋
I grew up with ham also but now I'm spoiled. I pay spiral cut. I love your old school videos. Tfs
We live in Virginia just north of Richmond. Very familiar with the Smithfield hams. They are delicious! Thanks for sharing your recipe!
