    My aunt gave me a pair of those Felco pruners about 20 years ago and I've been using (and loving) them ever since. They've never had any issues - excellent quality!

    A fantastic subject to cover. For years I used cheap (or mid range) never really had a issue when kept really sharp. But I did notice the cheap wear down quicker when sharpening. A good quality product is a investment for any budding garden enthusiast.

    The F7 Felco is for Large hand but the F12 is for Medium size hands. People need to be aware of what size they can handle. It's amazing how big the F7 looks even in your hand! You mentioned F8 but at 1:17 it showed F7. The F8 just doesn't have the swivel handle. Great video!

      @@jamesprigioni I love them. I got them at Costco a couple of years ago, probably $25-ish.
      I've always had great results with Fiskars. I have some loppers that are 25-30 years old that still amaze me.

    I still use my original Felco shears from 1992 when I worked at Watrous Plantation. Landscaped many new homes on Sanibel island, Naples and lee county and even was privileged to replace many of the dead Royal Palms that Thomas Edison Planted. Felco also has a great rebuild kit as well. Great product.

    Going with the F7 over the F11 now. Thanks for the demo. Looks like it will work for me since you are tall and have big hands too. Love the rotating handle and I think it's worth the extra money. Just got my first tree order in for Spring. Starting my food forest this spring and it's been a lot of work to get prepped. Thanks for all your informative and inspiring videos!

    The nice part of the more expensive prunerrs are how they hold up over time. Cheap primers work fairly well when they are brand new, but they quickly loose the edge and lock switches can snap off, handles can crack and blades can separate. Sometimes i screw up and leave my primers out in the garden by accident. Exposure to weather will immediately rust the cheap tool, where the pricey one is more forgiving.

  • @FrankEdavidson
    @FrankEdavidson 8 місяців тому +1

    I bought £0.50 (60 US cents) pruners at the supermarket on clearance from £1 or £2. Same springs as my Felco 2, 8 if and when the time comes that a Felco spring breaks or is lost I just need the springs to last a few days to order a new Felco spring. In the meantime they are just in my kitchen drawer for chopping up chicken bones to put in the compost caddy. Another cheap pair sits in the greenhouse for chopping off ddead plants in winter to save cleaning my Felcos or Tobisho. I don't want to bad use or leave my good tools in the greenhouse.

    I've had my Felco pruners for about four years and am very protective of them. I have probably another 10 pairs of pruners that I let the high school students use on my Christmas tree farm, but they don't get to touch my Felcos. I've found a decent pair of Stihl pruners for about $18 and I buy one or two pairs of them each year for the kids to use.

    A good pair of secateurs go a long way, especially in a food FOREST. I'm a cheap person myself and can't justify $75 on secateurs. However, I got some from my brother for Christmas that is pretty high-end compared to mine. His make a nice clean cut with almost no force it's crazy! The cheapo ones I have are like dull and kind of push/pinch the three together rather than severing it. I highly suggest if you have a food forest you invest in some good secateurs, its night and day compared to the cheap Chinese ones that are dull and flimsy.

    If the branch is a bit thicker don't just squeese harder but also move the tool up and down so it can cut easier.
    When you are using a knife to cut something you make a back and forth motion, instead of only putting pressure on it without any motion.

    Hey brother, just a small critique. Both cutting blades are high carbon and hardened steel. Cutting tools are made with carbon steel and then hardened for strength and edge retention

  • @dustman96
    @dustman96 5 років тому

    A good pruner makes such a big difference. A pruner with a thin blade made out of quality material is the way to go. Most cheap pruners have a thick blade with a greater bevel angle on the cutting part of the blade, making it much more difficult.

  • @robbinwelch355
    @robbinwelch355 5 років тому

    Totally smoother cut with the better pruner! ( Felco) You can hear it!

  • @christophergruenwald5054
    @christophergruenwald5054 5 років тому

    Perhaps you aren’t very fluent in steel, but the felco is high carbon steel. The felco heat treats the blade so it’ll hold an edge longer. The benefit to carbon steel is edge retention and ease of sharpening. Down fall is it rusts so you need to keep it clean and keep it oiled. China carbon steel is probably a super cheap low grade of carbon steel.

    Unless the anvil pruner is the quality of metal the blade is made from and if the user resharpens it when needed. cheap metal does not stay sharp and may not sharpen well either. A good thing to note is that hand pruners have a limit as to the diameter they are supposed to be used for. To ignore that is to cause the blades to spring, forcing them apart, which makes them cut poorly. Those cheap ones are not worth using on anything but flower stems I'd say. Good review. Loved the fail test!
    I have owned Felco pruners for years, since working in the nursery industry. A regular pair here runs around 45 or 50 dollars as I remember, at least they do here in Portland OR. Lifetime tools you can hand down to your kids. They come in different sizes too so if you have a small hand like I do that' is a big deal. A standard pruner is often too large which stresses out my hand making pruning a real pain, literally. You get what you pay for.

    I"m always amazed by globalization. These pruners were made by someone in China, at least to assemble it, then went on a boat to cross half the world, then arrived in a US shop where someone bought it for only 7$ (were is the salary for all the workers involved ?), then it broke immediately and ended up in a trash can, then probably in an incinerator, at best.
    It's a total waste of ressources. These 7$ pruners were in fact very expensive. And useless...

    With the thick branch you can see, that the pass-by-pruner works absolutly the same as an amboss-pruner. the second edge adds nothingto the cutting.

    I'm just a property manager and not a professional landscaper. If you want to hate your job, buy cheap tools. Yeah, it hurt me a bit to buy my Felco pruner but now I don't regret it. Pruning is now actually enjoyable and with little or no joint pain after... I'm 70 years of age already.

      Now you need the felco electric, its going to hurt you a lot more to buy but at least it wont be your joints.

      Buy an Okatsune at 1/3 the price with an old-fashioned design and the blade would stay sharper longer than any Felco. Even without the mechanical advantage of this new Felco handle, the cut is sharper, and not that much more strength is required.

    I have had my Felco 2 pruners for a couple of years now and really happy with them. But since breaking a small bone and tearing a tendon in my hand and im not getting any younger either lol I think ill upgrade in a year or two to those swivel handled ones as my trees will be getting a little thicker by then. Thank you for the demo.

    I'll stick with my cheap one. My budget doesn't allowed for a 75.00 one. Got on Amazon it works great.
