I must not be the only man who sees the way she sings with her mouth next to the microphone and gets a certain sort of thought. She is so wonderfully sensual.
russian sounds beautiful!!!! omg that poem was tearfilled... February. Get ink, shed tears. Write of it, sob your heart out, sing, While torrential slush that roars Burns in the blackness of the spring. wow
I hate to admit it but sometimes this song leaves me breathless. And it's more than just the song itself. It's her face, her emotion, her smiles, everything. Even her arms at the piano. One thing I worry about that I hope she never gets effected by, is that songs of hers like this are in such demand in concerts that she has to sing them over and over again. I hope she always sings them with this much emotion no matter how many times she does them.
Man oh man! Harsh words. I guess it's true that "beauty IS in the eye of the beholder" Because I think she is absolutely beautiful in this video. And I think I speak for millions that feel the same. I don't understand how you can't just melt at her face and passion with her performance. Whatever. You're entitled to how you feel. Oh, and I love the "gulps" as you call them. They would be my favorite part of the song if the rest of it wasn't just as good :) Just had to vent. Don't be mad.
A true musical gift to the world. An artist who's original, literate, daring, talented, and beautiful. Why can't there be more Regina Spektor's in this tragic world? Love to see her perform live someday.
I feel so much emotion from this song. It amazes me how good Regina Spektor is every time I listen to this. And the ending definitely sounds Russian with the tune.
"Apres moi deluge" is French and she translates it: After me the flood. The extended bit in the middle is Russian, which Eriu89 correctly identified as a poem by Pasternak (who wrote Doctor Zhivago).
no, of course people of different nationalities were screaming, but that moment when she started to sing in Russian - I had a feeling that Russian ones were waiting for this moment and have shown their presence in the audience =)
I live in Estonia where many people speak Russian. In addition, some of my close relatives are Russian. And I myself have been learning French for few years. So I may not be fluent but it just seems to me that the accent in minimal, as I have heard both strong Russian and French accents:)
yeah the poem she said, she being regina, had something to do with king louis, and it was a poem or something by Boris something. she is truly inspirational
I'm always amazed at the concentration she has on her face with this song. She kind of tunes out the audience, but at the same time watches them. It's hard to explain. Alls I know is that I like it. :)
I was at this show and Regina was amazing. I think it actually started to rain during this song which was perfect given the lyrics. It gave me goosebumps.
You know, she just rocks. She is not just a amazing musician, she is an artist. So many so called singers nowadays unoriginal and sound like they are whining. Regina is so great!
I know many people love this song, but I am obsessed I think. I watch it once every couple days. It's so haunting. I'm always on the look out for good new music and this chickypoo just blows my mind. I'm open to lots of cool new stuff, but I didn't expect this girl. I'm hooked. And not just this song. She is the kind where you must own everything she does. And I'm getting there :) She'd do this to me even with a bag over her head, but her cuteness is such a bonus :) :)
what a gorgeous show she did at lollapalooza , Incredible i've not heard her sing this way before and the changes she always does to the songs, here she shows her masive talent. love you regina
The Russian part of the song is the beginning of a poem by Boris Pasternak, one of the best poets of the 20th century... And yes, Russian is a magnificent language and definitely worth learning...
I played this for my brother one night as he was going asleep (a little drunk) and the next morning he asked me about the beautiful music I played him the night before. What was that? he said. I explained the whole thing. A Regina Spektor lesson is what he got. Boy was that fun. :)
It's not just Après Moi that is french. Le déluge is also french. So the french words are 'Après moi le déluge' which means 'After me comes the flood'. This phrase is attributed to the King of France Louis XV.
Regina Spektor is simply amazing, her music moves me so much . anyone who hasnt seen her live, get yourself to a live gig, she is simply awesome, her interaction, she simply ownes your soul while you watch her.
She is one the most wonderful musicians I have heard of it quite sometime. She is truly a breath of fresh air in a world of overly commercial pop/rock/rap/hip hop songs.
here is a p_o_o_r translation (original poem is brilliant): February. To get the ink and cry! To write about February sobbing violently, While rumbling slush is burning with black spring.
My favourite song. I totally respect artists, that can sing at concerts same like on album, or very similar. People that can do that, are real artists, IMO.
Of all the absolutely wonderful Regina Spektor songs that there are, I always come back to this one the most. Especially this live version at Lollapalooza with the face and her expressions and the mouth and the smiling and the not smiling and the hair and the eyes and the looks out to the audience and the voice and the frickin' beautiful piano. COME ON WHAT DO YOU WANT!! :) I think I'll listen to it again before I go to sleep
Nice way to put it. I can hardly believe it either. Are imperfect human beings capable of music like this. It doesn't seem possible. Like you, I think I may have to see her in person to believe :)
I learned her late too. About a year and a half ago when she was doing the Late Night shows for 'Begin To Hope'. I'm kind of obsessed with her now. Everything she does is just so interesting and different and great. She isn't just someone who had a cool song or two, she's like a whole new genre that hasn't been done before. She's hard to explain. But fun to figure out :) P.S. - And it just figures that she's beautiful to look at too. The girl's got it all
You want to know something really cool? The phrase 'apres moi le deluge' comes originally from Louis XV BUT it was popularised by its use in Rimbaud's Illuminations. That's two great poems she's snuck in there.
Although I have to admit that my mother, who is fluent in Russian, told me that she only understood half of the Russian part... So you may be right. But it is just my opinion and I can't say it better:)
Funny, cuz when I'm asked my favorite, this one always comes to mind. And then the ones you listed, and also Better, Your Honor, Hotel Song, Music Box, That Time, Us, Real Love, and, and, and, and, and so on and so on. She is amazing!! And she's so new still. You just know there's so much more to come. And they'll be all great and different. She's a music lovers paradise.
She HAS to perform at the Oscars..I mean she has loads of A List fans like, Viggo Mortensen for one...and also the world can see just how great she is,somebody should just take just any of her songs and use it in a film, they are Masterpieces!!!
wow her voice is amazing! especially around the 4:10 mark. i love the russian. i listen to a lot of international music but russian usually never pops up. it sounds really stunning.
The more I listen to this the more I wonder if the main text (I must go on standing etc.) is from Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago. It certainly would fit. Combined with the Pasternak poem it just feels right. Another incrediblly deep work by one of the finest artists performing and composing today.
regina spektor was born in moscow then moved during perestroika got some french influence she is jewish and it has french and russian in her song. beautiful girl. amazing voice. wish she'd come to salt lake.
Thing I was suprised with was that she sounds much better live, in a concert, than on recording. I have the CD but I listen to these songs on youtube from Lollapalooza as I like it much more
She once said in an interview this was her proudest song. Bless her, it's truly a masterpiece.
I must not be the only man who sees the way she sings with her mouth next to the microphone and gets a certain sort of thought. She is so wonderfully sensual.
russian sounds beautiful!!!! omg
that poem was tearfilled...
February. Get ink, shed tears.

She's singing first in English, then a line or two of French, then Russian. Multi-lingual? Yes. Amazing? Hell yes.
I speak Russian and believe me it sends shivers all over my body, the way she sings this. Every time.
Февраль. Достать чернил и плакать!

Божественно
Goddess!

her face at the end is priceless she's totally an awesome artist

An angel sent to tell us not to be afraid to help and love people. Regina is extraordinary.
слышны крики из зала вначале куплета на русском. видимо, наши фаны в зале =)
песня чудесная и исполнение потрясающее!
I'm always amazed at the concentration she has on her face with this song. She kind of tunes out the audience, but at the same time watches them. It's hard to explain. Alls I know is that I like it. :)
Меня прет фантостически , а что конкретно понять не получается. Волшебница!
Her voice is just so amazing it gives you chills

i love this song. she has an amazing voice. i like how she smiles at the end.
I didn't used to think she was pretty at first, I was actually quite disappointed when I first saw her, but, she's grown on me.
I know many people love this song, but I am obsessed I think. I watch it once every couple days. It's so haunting. I'm always on the look out for good new music and this chickypoo just blows my mind. WOW. Genialne. Jak usłyszałem to po raz pierwszy, to przez cały dzień nie mogłem się od tego kawałka oderwać ;). Regina jest cudowna.
What other song is like this? None I know. Regina is the most unique thing that's come around in a long time. I am absolutely floored by her talent
I adore Regina. She's simply beyond words.

My favorite song (that I've heard) by Regina. I love it! This is a great live version, too. She seems so genuine at the end. Beautiful 5/5

Brilliant! Regina is amazing.
All those hours on practice and playing the piano paid off. It's near-perfect. Here's to all wonderfully talented Jewish ladies!
You want to know something really cool? The phrase 'apres moi le deluge' comes originally from Louis XV BUT it was popularised by its use in Rimbaud's Illuminations. That's two great poems she's snuck in there.
This gives me the chills. Briiiilliant.
I've heard this song a year ago and i love it as much as that time. Such hot, such impassioned and always new. I can't explain, i just feel
Although I have to admit that my mother, who is fluent in Russian, told me that she only understood half of the Russian part... So you may be right. But it is just my opinion and I can't say it better:)
Thank you Staten for uploading these videos of Regina. (:
I love her more and more! I just red she grown up in russia.. it makes her even sweeter ....The only star that i could fall in love with...
Nothing to say, nothing to add

Music is music, doesn't matter who likes it, if it's good, then it's good, no question.
