    This week, Justin Colletti talks about the 80/20 approach to audio engineering: how to focus on the things that matter most and avoid the comforting lies that keep us from making great sounding releases.
    He skewers the "Myth of A Thousand Little Choices" and offers a better mindset and a set of techniques for making sure you can make bold choices and avoid getting bogged down in the kind of minutia that just doesn't matter.

    This is such an important topic... obsessing over insignificant details at the beginning of a mix is a quick way kill the mix and spend a lot of time going round in circles.... I think get a really good balance first without touching eq or compression is way more productive way to get closer to a good mix... I think less is more .....and it’s taken me years to come to that conclusion .... This topic is One of those things you need to keep reminding yourself

    Absolutely true. I refer to it as the hierarchy of making music. Every step in the process of making music is important and can prepare and elevate the next step, but the further along you go, the less important it becomes relatively speaking in a holistic sense. It's like a pyramid, where the bottom is the most important thing. After all that serves as the foundation for your pyramid building, and without it, it could not stand. Roughly sketching it's something like: Composition/Songwriting > Arrangement > Production > Players/Performers > Performance > Instrument > Recording (Space>Mics/Pres/etc. > Mixing > Mastering

      What does production means in your terminology?
      I guess it is to get musicians food and stuff, so they would perform as best as they could XD
      Or is it a process of making sure the recording space is the right one / has everything you need for the session?

  • @VoxJ
    @VoxJ 5 років тому +8

    This is quite intuitive… If something takes a lot of effort (or time to mix), probably something else is wrong (arrangement etc…) When recording and mixing yourself this takes you out of hyperfocus and back to the drawing board (and get Sonarworks with good monitors)

    So much truth here. I've lost track of how many tracks never got finished because I spent too long tweaking minute details and lost interest in the tune. Even worse, it took me way too long to realize how dumb it is to work on a track on solo, with no idea how the changes interact with all the other parts. Invariably it ends up sounding worse.

  • @davidkeller8084

    I have found my self in "tracking" trying different microphones, different pre amps, compressor settings, different guitars, different strings, different amps, so on and so on, looking for "That specific sound ". And I realized I have just spent 80% of my time trying to find a 20% difference. Spend 20% of your time "Pre Planning" and you will get an 80% better result.

    Super thankful for this. I feel the big takeaway applies very much to live mixing, when there is very little time for conversation and decision making and the expectations are always on a deadline. Recently on a gig, i struggled to get a person playing an electronic kit's monitors right; I was feeding input into his monitor, but his channel on the board near him was too low to hear what i was changing. I had to bring everything up to dangerous levels to get him the sound that he wanted. Once that was dealt with, the gig was smooth sailing.

    i agreed when this video first started playing, because i saw where you were going. and the best way i usually say it is to say that Slash will sound _amazing_ even on a cheap guitar. i'm pretty sure no one will disagree with that. he does the best with what he has, as you said you would do if you could not choose which preamps you were using. just imagine it tho, Slash sitting with your group on the beach in front of a fire, sipping a beer. then, following the discussion, he asks if anyone has a guitar.. and someone hands him an LTD or a Squire. he will still rip on that guitar and remind us of when we were kids listening to AFD.

    I'm mixing a whole album I recorded myself right now and it's the biggest project I've worked on yet.
    It's sounding good but there's just something about every mix I can't quite put my finger on. It's tempting to believe there's some special combination of tiny, calculated adjustments that will make it sound professional and if I keep tinkering forever I'll find it. But I'm coming to the realization that it has more to do with decisions I made in the tracking. Can't change that now but I look forward to applying that knowledge to my next project.

    • @SonicScoop
      @SonicScoop  2 роки тому +1

      Sometimes getting one track mastered by an outside mastering engineer can help put the whole project into perspective, and help you glean some insights about what 20% (or less) of the mix to revisit... if any.
      And sometimes that last 20% of quality that comes from a good master is all you need to confidently put the project to bed, move on and apply your lessons to the next one.
      Hope that helps!

      It's just something that comes from experience, good monitoring and a combination of arrangement and performance. If you listen to the individual tracks from many famous records, you'll hear that the sounds of each track isn't always perfect. Check out the sessions for "You Oughta Know" by Alanis Morissete. The mic's blown out in the vocal, the bass sounds plunky, the guitars sound like scratch tracks with a 57 on a practice amp and the drum loop is low quality and not quantized. But the sun if the whole is brilliant.

    The takeaway I’m getting is to be willing to make bold choices
    Making lots of small tweaks and hoping it adds up to something good may still produce something undesirable
    Seems also that eliminating harsh frequencies is important. As a music fan I listen to songs on repeat. So now that I’m learning mixing I mostly want to have songs that I can listen to on repeat and not have harsh or annoying parts

      Not if that 20% is total project budget as the 80% needs to go to supporting the other steps. So it depends on how you think about it. The goal isn't perfection but support of others' work that adds up in total to greatness.

    • @MrPete0282
      @MrPete0282 3 роки тому

      Micro-mixing... its a rabbit whole.
      Since forum talk is mentioned in the vid, i'd like to say that going from 95% to 96% maybe a big deal when you're passionate about it but buying a 6k piece of gear to go from 50% to 51% is stupid/worthless. Also some times instead of + 1% you get -1% and that other 4k piece is doing the trick... But when someone praises something in a forum ppl in general don't have in mind the diminishing returns for that matter so they end up having delusions about gear.
      As they say, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
