I built a Chinese Carbon EBIKE!!

  • I purchased a $680 FULL carbon frame direct from China, with a HUGE 840Wh battery. It's called the Dengfu E10. I Paired with a Bafang M500 Motor rated at 95Nm torque, massive 840Wh internal battery. This bike looks like it could be the ULTIMATE electric enduro mountain bike at reasonable pricing.
If you'd like to see more details, I have a full build thread over at EMTB Forums including full breakdown of parts costs, frame supplier etc.
Click here for the build thread: bit.ly/3pxiJ6a
The paint I used was from here: www.specialist...
The ETOE vid that really helped me with painting: • spray paint a bike at ...
    Bike Stats:
    - 24.5KG Weight
    - Mixed wheel size 29er front 27.5 rear
    - 840Wh battery, 95Nm Motor
    - 63.8 degree head angle
    - 505mm reach (Frame Size XL)
    - 455m Chain Stay
    - 170mm Rockshox ZEB
    - 155mm rear travel, Rockshox Super Deluxe
    - DT Swiss H1700 Wheelset
    - Deore 4 pot brakes
    - Deore 10 speed drive train
    - Big Betty Rear / Magic Mary Front
Also a BIG thanks to MOSHON-E and APickup for support and help with the build and paint process
Doing a DIY build like this also has negatives. It takes a fairly long time to build, shop for parts etc, especially in the current situation with delayed / restricted stock! You need tools etc, time to build. And not the best support when you need help. Warranty etc will also take time if I need it. BUT its very rewarding building your own! And you can choose the parts that you really like.
For many folks, a direct / shop bought bike is by far the best option, all things considered. Yes, you spend more, but the support is (usually) much better. But great to see this DIY build as a feasible option for those who would like to give it a go.

Loved doing this! Bike weight is 24.5KG (forgot to add that part to the vid!) have been riding the bike and it’s great!! Can’t wait to share the next vid. Also to add I am NOT suggesting this is the best way to go about getting an ebike!! Lots of time spent painting, building, waiting etc etc.
    -
Warranty, reliability, longevity etc etc all need to be tested. And that’s one of the reasons I did this. To experiment. It’s a LOT of work to do it this way. Lots of tools, time and patience.

Fair play Rob. I did the same thing by buying 4 alloy frames which use the Bafang Ultra motors in 2019. 3 full suspension frames and one hardtail. All four bikes I built cost me less than my Levo and Kenevo. This is the next step for ebike owners however, I do agree with you in terms of the purchasing process. I'm quite lucky to have private property which I can access in my neck of the woods. Perhaps I'll make a vid and upload my Bafang Ultra collection for all to see as all four still work after near 2 years.

Let me know if you would like to see anything specific in the video. I've already have people asking me about geometry and motor power which I'll cover in great length.

That's the price of frame and battery. Decent long travel suspension won't come free. You can go down to Yari/Deluxe select level but that's still serious money. If you want wheels that'll stay a bit true for the kind of stuff this kind of machine is meant to ride it'll cost a bit too. I would say 600$ for the fork 250$ for the shock 250$ for the wheels, tires cost a lot of money and matters a lot too. 100 for the dropper 20$ for each component. In the end it addup.

Will say been wishing we might see a shift away from hard wired lights an turning lights on bikes, as some companies can put pretty low grade lights on them, and a switch to having some usb ports on the bike frame. I say this as many lights have usb connectors it seems, allowing us to choose what light we enjoy the most, and still run it off the battery of the bike over buying a battery we need to fit on the bike. Put on some covers to hide the ports when not in use, and even the companies having their own lights you can use built for the bikes they sell an it would be a nice change.

Very interesting project Rob - well done, and like many others who have commented I'm interested to see how this stands up to punishment, and I
agree with your comments about the Deore drivetrain - I've been running Deore cassettes on my Focus Jam2 for the last couple of years with no problems.
I got 1600 miles out of one cassette and chain combo, and only replaced them because it seemed like I should - they still worked fine!
The current set is on about 1000 miles at the moment with no issues.
I'm quite interested by many of the comments regarding Chinese quality.
Not all manufacturers will be up to scratch for sure (but that's the case everywhere, even here in the UK).
I design products for a Chinese manufacturing company who supply Domestic Lighting, to US, UK and various other markets.
Obviously these are safety critical items and subject to stringent testing and certification, in a similar way to the testing that would be required
    for a bike frame.
In our factory we manufacture for some rather top end retailers and we also make stuff at the lower end of the price scale for Walmart!!
Same production lines, same staff, same Design, R&D and sampling dept., same process, work flow management, testing and QC broadly speaking.
Different customers do have slightly different requirements, but they all follow the required legislation.
It's usually the materials, and components that are specced that makes the most difference to the perceived quality and price of the product.
I would imagine that this is a very similar scenario in the bike manufacturing industry.
I don't know if Dengfu are an OEM manufacturer for any big brand cycle companies?
In our industry, by having long standing relationships and working closely with branded and trusted retailers we've learnt good practice over the years, so if a Chinese frame manufacturer has similar relationships they would also benefit from this, and they should therefore be able to offer a quality product on a direct basis.
However, some Chinese manufacturers will cut corners if they are off loading goods into the domestic market or just shipping stuff out directly to end customers, so potential home builders should do their research and proceed with both eyes open and at the same time be aware that the money saved is probably a good proportion of what brands charge in order to be able to achieve brand confidence through customer support, replacement parts, warranties etc.

Also I paint Cars . When we paint we obviously smooth out the sins between coats . Like splashes and runs etc. However each coat blends into the paint of the previous coat . Kinda like how lacquer melts the coats together . It's normally not a practice to polish between coats . The paint itself takes care of that . Provided your other coats were in the time frame suggested by can instructions . If it said sand between coats they just meant rough sanding . I don't do much rattle can painting . So maybe it's a process I don't know about . But I don't think so . If you do this type of project again get yourself one of these. Makes painting sweeps much easier then just the nozzle on the rattle can . It's called Rust-Oleum-Comfort-Grip-Universal. There's a few brands out . The whole thing in carbon vs alu is about lower weight and higher stiffness, but in reality the difference is almost irrelevant when you replace your bottom bracket with an electric motor. So if there's only the status symbol factor left a no name frame, well it just doesn't cut it... you need spend big bucks on an S-WORKS sticker at the side and make sure the color matches your brand new iPhone.
