One of my favourite places ever. It is so unworldly, as you enter, you feel that you have left the rest of the planet behind you, then you reach the top and look out. It's as if you have crossed over some sort of barrier between one world and the next. Truly magical, and quite Tolkienian.

I suggest you always isit Mont St-Michel on a week day off season. During the peak touristic season or holidays crowds of visitors can be such that it's as if the planet had joined you on the small island. As amazing as it is, Mont St-Michel unfortunately also is one of these places where overtourism can ruin the whole experience.

@@educationforthedumb832 That is not true. The vaulted ceiling of Notre Dame sur Terre dates back to the 10th century but the chapel itself is much older, the romanesque Abbey buildings date to around the year 1000, the building of the Abbey church was completed in 1080. Three crypts were added to strengthen and support the building sometime before 1040 - this is when they rebuilt the vaults over Notre Dame-sous-Terre, to support the nave. The 'Merveille' was completed in 1228 during the abbacy of Raoult II des Isles, Abbot Richard Turstin had the Porterie and Belle Chaise built in the 13th century. The Abbey was fortified in the 14th century probably by the Dukes of Normandy, including the fortified gatehouse (châtelet), though some fortifications would have been in place before that.

Thank you so much for sharing this! I spent a couple of days in Mont St Michel when I was 10 years old, and I always remembered how enchanting everything was. I ran up and down ALL of the steps and stairs and streets and pathways - - each and every one of them - - for two whole days. I zigged and I zagged, and I crissed and I crossed. I went back and forth, from early morning right up until it became dark (which was not until after 9PM - - - it was early July). I investigated every single nook and cranny (while my mother rested and visited with friends). This was 60 years ago, when little kids could run around and explore to their heart's content. Your thorough and loving visit has brought me great joy. Thanks again!

Seeing St. Pierre again ( the lower church ) was very emotional. The reason why some of the statues faces are damaged is from either the the 100 years War or French Revolution or the Nazis. The French hid everything they could from the Nazis. Even though the objects were removed (and bombed) MontSt.Michel is still a wonderful Holy place. Thanks for your excellent videography !

Really? You can "feel how old"... "stuff" is? Can you Americans get any real info? Real names for real items? I don't hear you talking so general about your Civil war. KNOWING about people, traditions, items, building techniques, materials, melodies, recipes, clothes, defense procedures, symbols...soooo much to explore, yet you chose to stick with "real old" or "medieval" (1000...ish year timeframe- depending of an area). You don't get to appreciate what you don't know. Visit the place like this with American attitude and your experience won't be as near as profound as it should. Imagine if you stood on a place where they executed someone and you didn't know. Or "some old grave" actually contains bones of a saint that is believed to do something significant. Or if you looked behind great gate (like these two) and didn't know attackers were trapped there and there were special holes to pour burning oil on them. Or what was the exact historical and defensive difference between round and square tower? Or symbolism behind certain engravings or rosettas. "Ancient" (which this is not) won't get you far in understanding. It is a horrible, horrible, arrogant American thing refusing to UNDERSTAND anything but them. ugh... but if you don't know how to understand others, than this is sad. Not arrogant and disgusting but sad.

I can feel the energy of the place as you move through the streets, and when they only had fire torches to use at night in that period, goodness what treacherous incidents could happen. Just such a treat to take your viewers there. Many thanks from Australia.
