Hello my dear friend Grant, The case of the Trimline awning is quite worn. I love these do-it-yourself projects. I also watched her tailoring talent well. You now have a new awning bag. you did a good job. Congratulations. See you. Cheers mate.
Thanks Rob! I was really hesitant about doing it myself, but after getting a few quotes to have a company do it, they scared the hesitation out of me 🤣🤣
Great video, AND I found out what the name of the part I need for my awning. Keder Welt 2 flap, who knew! Thank you for this DIY video, been searching all over for the name of that piece. Our awning is in great condition, bag falling apart. Now I can fix it thanks to you.
I did the same for our 17' Boler. Carefree of Colorado awning. There was a keder strip attaching the bag to the frame so I removed the frame for sewing. I also used heavy duty snaps instead of the tie and added 4 snaps to the sides to work as deflappers.
Awesome to hear! If I could go back in time I would think of a better solution to the straps, but time was tight and a direct replacement meant I didn't have to spend a few days thinking up something different. I like the idea of snaps, I'll take that into consideration for the future. 👍👍
its done! the new bag looks better because i color matched my trailer. i used the hercules 1000 material as suggested by you to upgrade and as recommend by JT’s. sewing the kelther strip was hard on the machine. thanks. could not do it without your inspiration
Thanks for the video. My bag looks horrible and I keep thinking I need to do something. Like you, the awning itself is fine. I do know how to sew, so I think I’ll give this a go!
@@TheGrantAlexander How thick is the material you used? It doesn’t look very thick-I’m assuming you used it because it is waterproof and white? Is there a reason you ordered versus getting something from the fabric store? Trying to avoid ending up with gobs of extra fabric like you did :-)
@@wendygrossereducational3737 waterproof and what were the exact specifications I wanted. If I were to do it again I would buy nicer material. I ended up making a miscut so having the extra was nice and I plan on using the extra to make a waterproof bag at some point in the future, but I have had a few people offer to buy the extra from me (but because I miscut I don't have enough for a second bag) so I'm sure you can sell it afterwards
Thanks Boris! It was very tricky for sure, but luckily I have a nice supportive floor, lol! Next time I will either get some help or get a better sewing machine, lol
Looks great with the newly restored trailer! Making things is always better than buying them. Sewing is such a great skill to have, and I see the blue tape reference mark worked well.
Good job mate. I'm keen on the sewing machine too but I don't think I could ever get into that position. If I need an awning I guess I'll give you a call. Love to Mrs. Grant and the Grantlet (and the Next One)
Thanks Mark! It was fun learning something new and expanding the maker arsenal, but I think I will pass on doing it again! lol. I'll pass along the love, the next one is still inside at the moment, but due to arrive this week :)
Thanks Shane! It's true, this year I have learned quite a few new skills. I didn't really think about it until you mentioned it, so I really appreciate that!
Nice work Grant, can you easily take the whole thing off for winter storage, or did that sealer kind of lock it on? One tiny tiny tiny critique... if somebody needs to be told to backstitch, they probably might not know what it is to begin with. 🤔
Fair point Jeremy 🤣🤣 I didn't know what back stitching was before doing this project. But so many sewing tutorials mentioned it that I googled it. 🤣 The awning can be taken off for winter storage and that would probably extend the life, but I'm lazy and will likely leave it on the trailer. (there are two #8 screws that hold it in place on the awning rail btw)
Thanks! The sewing skills are still a 20/20. From 20 feet away or when I'm going 20kph they look good🤣🤣 yes, it's caution tape, part of the Halloween decor. I filmed the seam sealer part this afternoon as I realized I didn't film it back when it was actually done in July🤣🤣 (also explains why I go from wearing shorts to wearing a flannel🤣🤣)
Nice job! The zipper on my bag is dry rotted and the ends have separated from the bag. I bought a new zipper for $14USD and will see if I can attach it with my sewing machine without removing the awning from the bag.
@@TheGrantAlexander When you went to sew the zipper to the bag, what kind of thread did you use? The video shows a spool of white string, but I can't tell if that's nylon fishing line or what it is. I presume it needs to be something heavy duty. Thx!
@@TheGrantAlexander I'll check out JT and some local shops as well for the UV thread. When my bag is done, I may spray it with FlexSeal just for an added layer of waterproofing. Thanks again!
Grant, first of all, nice job! What is the name of the zipper supplier? My bag is in great condition, but the zipper is in UN repairable condition. Keep up the great work!
I don't recall the dimensions, but I do know that I have an awning that is longer than the boler. In the last bit of the video you might be able to catch the standoffs I fabricated to hold up the extended awning rail. Most bolers I have seen have a 7 foot. So it would be best to measure yours.
I didn't save the pieces I used to make the pattern. They were very brittle and couldn't be folded/rolled without leaving a trail of debris behind them. Good luck with yours!
I didn't mention it in the video, but I actually miscut the first time and I am not certain I would have enough to make a second bag (also I have a plan to use it on another project next summer) All that being said, it was only about $40 for the three yards from JTs Outdoor Fabrics, so it isn't too expensive to get a full width from them. Good luck!
You were lucky enough to have one of those Singer Touch 'N Sew workhorses to learn on - the most reliable machine I ever had! Thanks for all the tips.
@@tealbingy5450 definitely a workhorse! I got a new Singer HD but I feel like the old one has more power!!
Nice work with the sewing machine, Grant. That's one more skill under the belt 👍😁
Thanks Suj! It is always fun trying something new, and I really had nothing to lose on this one🤣🤣
Impressive, well done.
Thank you!
I like how you use all the woodworking terms like infeed and outfeed and apply them to sewing. Noice. Good job mate!
You gotta use the terminology you know😂😂

Onya Grant, pretty bloody impressive mate. I reckon sewing has as many skills needed as woodworking does 🍻🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺🍺👍

Smart move on the iron. Works well with fabric even when not plugged in. Also like the tape used to keep your edge.
